Re: McElwain Emerges as OC Candidate

This is the second time I have seen this posted, but answer me this question, why call a press conference to announce that nothing is happening? That makes no sense. Should I start calling daily press conferences to announce I'm keeping the job I already have?
You wouldn't hold a press conference, on your team's appreciation day, that you turned down the OC position at one of the top football programs in the nation, when you are a mid-major?

You might not, but most would.

Remember the whole "Eat your heart out, Alabama!" bit? I imagine Fresno will handle it with a lot more class than that outfit, but nevertheless I imagine that will happen.

And you know that if it happens it won't be ten minutes before it is on ESPN, thus giving major attention to a small program that generally struggles to create attention. All the more reason to do it, I imagine.

If McElwain is having a press conference there in Fresno, that is not a good sign. Sounds like more of a celebratory "I'm staying" type thing.

Why is CNS having such a hard time finding a coach? Is he that hard to work with? :conf2:

Why call a press conference at all if your declining the job? Doesn't make sense to me.

He's quite demanding. A former LSU player's brother in law lives up the street from me (that played under Saban) and he said Saban had no problem jumping on his assistant coaches just as much as he did the players. He's a very demanding employer and it wears on a lot of people and some people it doesn't. His track record speaks for itself. He goes through assistants like water. Some stay for the long haul but some do not.

Re: McElwain Emerges as OC Candidate

Ask Jim Leavitt. Or Rich Rodriguez.
I can see it more at the head coach level, with higher scrutiny and the slghtly more open process. But, in this search most of the news has just been rumor fueled with no open media dialog.

I guess he could just like the attention, but it seems strange that all of the so called candidates that came before him didn't feel it necessary.

Edit: Mostly, I dislike the prospect of anyone calling a press conference, getting up in front of a podium just to turn :biga: down.

Would someone please call Charlie Stubbs?
Not that I don't like Charlie Stubbs, but he wasn't able to really integrate into a pro-style offense the last time he was here, and from looking at the candidates who keep popping up, it would seem Saban is going to demand that much.

Bryan Harsin and Gary Crowton would be spread-leaning coaches but they're still grounded in pro-style looks.

I think its McElwain but my recent track record is in a slump.
According to Fresno State internet posters, the news has broken in California that McElwain is leaving. The press conference is to announce that the University supports / understands why he is leaving, and that a replacement is already in place.

Re: McElwain to Bama

Its funny how an almost sure thing can have so much doubt injected into it minutes later. Apparently tomorrow is fresno state football appreciation day. (yeah, I laughed too) You gotta figure they scheduled the PC at fresno with the head coach present on this particular day for a reason... That would probably kill the celebration to announce that hes leaving. All of a sudden things dont look so good for McElwain to Bama.
