the 3-3-5 has left us susceptible to the middle running game and the screen pass. Maybe it's not so much the alignment as it is the personnel running within it, but either way, we've GOT to shore up on those two areas.

That 46 Defense was a great defense for it's era. I heard that D was one of the reasons Bill Walsh started the concept of the West Coast Offense, which we all know was really created by Urban Meyer.
What are you talking about? Everyone knows Bill Walsh invented the WC offense!

However, few know that Urban Meyer invented Bill Walsh.

3-3-5 or 4-3 or 3-4 or whatever is indicative of the personel on the field, not the alignment of those personel!
Yeah, the 3-3-5 forces 190 lb db's to play LB and be responsible for blitzs. This is my big problem with it b/c it makes undersized players take on lb responsibilities. Also,it allows our front 3 to be double teamed and makes us soft vs the run.If we had 200+ lb db's it might work, but it seems a 4-3 would put more muscle on the field and we could use the 3-3-5 on long passing downs.

Last year we had the personel with the experiance and talent to run it. I'm not sure that is the case this year.

CJK's style defense requires a lot of lane/gap discipline. In other words, it requires everyone to be in the xact right spots at the exact right time. It's very hard for the younger guys (and even older guys without a lot of game time) to do this. you also have to depend on the DL to take up a lot of the blockers. At least two of the DL need to draw a double team to free up the LB's. I may have missed it, but it seems like on average only one DL usually draws the double team this year on a regular basis.

I'd humbly suggest we're in the same boat with the 4-3...

I guess I'm in the minority here, but I'm gonna keep on believing that CJK has the knowledge of both the players' strengths/weaknesses and defense in general to defer to his judgement. I think he's earned that distinction.

I kind of like the 3-3-5 defense because of it's flexibility and interchangeable parts. We've relied on it for a while now and it has stood strong many times.

But I hope that against the Viles, put have at least 4 down lineman to first and foremost stop their run. It seems whenever we consistently do that we generate a pass rush too. We've got to limit big gains and force at least 1 TO.
