Alabama's Wilson learning quickly
He watches more film than Roger Ebert.

He throws more passes than an NFL rookie in mini-camp.

John Parker Wilson understands what it means to be the starting quarterback at the University of Alabama.

"I know we've got a long way to go to be where we want to be," the sophomore from Hoover said. "We've been working out in the mornings and then going to class, pretty much every day coming up here and throwing.
Bama's Wilson embraces duties as starting QB
John Parker Wilson is learning all about the duties that come with being Alabama's starting quarterback this summer.

He has spent hours studying game film, led daily passing drills and even obligingly posed for pictures with female classmates before settling down for an interview session with reporters Thursday.

''It's a lot better than nobody knowing who you are,'' Wilson said, grinning.

I don't sense that everybody is fired up about JPW, but I am. Dang, the kid was a flat-out stud in one of the nation's best HS programs and I'm sure he fully understands that BAMA thang. With McElroy coming in and Marve right behind him, I think we're in great shape at the QB position.

Huge upside. Mobile. Good leader. Confident. Good work ethic. Reading between lines (on TF and elsewhere), seems to be better liked by his teammates than previous starters.

Downside: Doesn't have experience. Combine that with confidence, and you WILL see picks early in his career. Say what you want about previous starters, they didn't throw picks.

JMHO, but I think we'll see Wilson try to make something happen more than once early on -- force throws into multiple coverage, throw across the field on the run, throw off his back foot under pressure high and over the middle. He could get away with that in high school, but won't have that luxury in college, even against lower-level D-1A. Then I think we'll see the light come on, and that stuff will stop.

Unfortunately, he's a relatively untested sophomore, and there's no substitute for game experience.

Good news is that, with far less talent than Wilson's to work with, Shula and Rader have gotten QBs to stop making mental errors after only a few games. Brodie was a rare talent, albeit with his own set of limitations. Look to Spencer Pennington's performance for a true measure of QB coaching.

Pennington was gutsy (like Wilson seems to be developing), and a leader (like Wilson). Wilson, however, has more ability than Pennington dreamed of having. But even without a world of God-given talent, Pennington didn't make mental errors after his first few starts. Errors of execution, yes. Mental errors, no.

I expect the same progression from Wilson. The light will turn on. Question is, will it turn on before Arkansas?

yea, JP will hit the dirt alot at first, but every new QB has to get a tast of the turf a few times...

I think he's going to not only be a great QB but a great Leader,

I don't know how well he will do this fall, but JP continues to impress with his work ethic.:BigA:
At least his head seems to be in the right place. Hope his shoulders are broad.....'cause they're gonna have to carry a lot of weight!

If he truly does, then he has taken the first step to success.

All indications are that JPW has earned their respect also, and hopefully, will earn ours as well, this fall.

Count me in TommyMac! I think the '06 offense could be a tad better than the '05 version due to JPW's characteristics and abilities. If the offense will execute properly then that unit could make up ground lost with the drop off on the other side of the ball.

I agree. And as we've heard on this site before, 2006 will be the first year where the TEs are used as offensive weapons. I can't wait for that!

I think you nailed it 'Hawk. He sounds like his mama and daddy raised him right and will blossom into a special talent.
His Mom, dad, uncle...heck, his family are all graduates of UA. His Mom was a football cheerleader. After his DUI, it was his family that came down on him the hardest...with a clear message "Realize what opportunities/responsibilities you have in your grasp as the QB at UA."

When you talk about players that "Get It" he knows what it means to be the QB at Bama. Almost makes me glad we don't have Tboy behind him so all the QB experts will give him time to make a few mistakes before they start calling for the 2nd string QB.
Its been a few years sense we had the board melt down over a "this QB's better than that QB thread".
I can't wait.  :eek2:

couldn't agree more. i truly think jpw is going to be one of the best qbs bama has ever had. i just really have a feeling that he's going to be so spectacular that he's going to hold onto the starting job until he leaves either through graduation or entering the draft and that he'll be a premier SEC qb throughout his years under center for the tide.
