Saban is a good coach. But, I think that what people are saying about LSU making Saban is that he was not great before he came to LSU and after a few years there, he is all of a sudden a genius.
Are LSU fans going to sit there and tell us they didn't worship the ground he walked on while he coached at LSU?

I mean, really?

I live in Louisiana and remember grown people crying when Saban left for the Dolphins

Oh please  That's the most ridiculus thing I think I've ever heard. The world (or LSU football) didn't come to an end when Saban left.

I'm pretty sure you didn't see any grown men cry. I seriously doubt by the time he left, no one was even surprised. We all knew how bad he wanted a shot at a pro HC job

Just be glad he's gotten that out his system.

Saban is a good coach. But, I think that what people are saying about LSU making Saban is that he was not great before he came to LSU and after a few years there, he is all of a sudden a genius. At Michigan St., he was 35-24-1 with only one year winning more than 7 games. He was there 5 years.
Saban was 10-2 at Michigan St. in 1999. That season, he beat:

  • Notre Dame
  • Michigan, who beat a very good Alabama team by one point in the Orange bowl.
  • Ohio State
  • Penn State, 10-3 that year and winners over a good Texas A&M team in the Alamo Bowl.
  • Florida (SEC East Champs) in the Citrus Bowl
I know that LSU was desperately ready for a change at HC after the 1999 season, but I don't think that they were so desperate that they'd go after a middle-of-the-road coach from the Big10. I remember when Saban was at Michigan State and I remember hearing how much of a perfectionist he was and how good of a recruiter he was. He had a reputation before he came to LSU and most people thought that he was going to be a very successful coach wherever he was. He didn't just "suddenly" become a genius after coming to LSU.

When he was named the head coach at LSU, I remember a lot of people stating that with the ability to recruit that he would have at LSU, he would be much more successful than he could ever be at Michigan State. That was true, but he was going to be snatched by some top program after that season. He would have been quite successful at any of them. LSU just happened to be ones that were lucky enough to snag him. Unfortunately, I suppose, for them is that he had unfulfilled ambition that meant that he would leave for what he thought was greener pastures when the opportunity arose. Alabama was lucky enough to be available when those pastures became bitter for him.

I agree with all of that.

I find it priceless when Moon trashes Coach for "running off half his staff every year". He's lost 2 maybe so far? The highest profile, of course, was Applewhite, but that was a more complicated situation than Coach just "running him off".

Now let's look at Tubby's record with assistants. Has there been a single year when he's changed less than 2 assistants? Aren't they, in fact, breaking in 2 new co-ordinators this year alone? To talk about someone else's record with coaches while ignoring Tubby's and praising his coaching is disingenious, and reflects a serious agenda.

Nick got the same criticism from opponents recruiters when he was at LSU because he turned over about 3 assistants a year. About half of them left because they couldn't handle Nicks imperious manner. The other half were dropped because they weren't getting the job done.

The bottom line is that Nick upgraded his staff every single season that he was at LSU. We came to understand that turnover can be good. The remaining staff got along with Nick and any dead wood was replaced quickly. It's a job, not a fraternity, and top head coaches must have a top staff to be effective. Both Charlie McClendon and Gerry Dinardo had successful careers take a dive at the end because they were too loyal to long-time assistants who were no longer getting the job done. Nick does not have this problem.

I was also thinking this about Tubby and his history with staffs after reading Moon's comments on Saban. Go figure...

LSU is in the national all-time Top-10 football rankings of schools, behind only Bama and Tennessee in the SEC. It ain't like LSU never won any football before Nick arrived.

Ahhh, controversy. It's like heroin to some sportswriters. Maybe it works . . . it's got us talking football in the off-season! :biggrin2:
According to who ? Never seen LSU crack the top 15 on any list . When I get my home PC up & running , I'll toss out a couple of lists which pop that balloon . I've never even seen any sort of objective list or rankings that even has LSU ahead of the barn . :conf3:

I may be wrong but I believe from a historical SEC record standpoint LSU has the third or fourth best all time record in the SEC. I believe they are fourth behind Georgia or vice versa.

Why do we continue to have people post things on this board written by Josh Moon? He has more than spoken his mind regarding his disdain for all things Bama.

Anyway, Josh Moon is an utter moron whose opinions don't deserve our time.

Good comment Alan. It is not like it is a surprise that this yahoo is writing things that are a slam to the Alabama football program, CNS, and Alabama fans. If you read it fine but why post it?

Some folks think that Shula hammered the final nail in his coffin when he refused to can Connelly like Mal suggested...

even without that final nail, the lid on the coffin had been closed and sufficiently sealed, methinks. Without getting into a whole other thread about the history of CMS coaching tenure, let me just say TGIO!

Now, Brett is going to read that abbreviation and get all irritated... :D
OTOH, if he'd fired Ball and CBC and hired decent replacements, it's altogether possible that he wouldn't have had quite such a humiliating last season. It wouldn't have taken much for him to hold on for one more year, in which case we would have missed landing CNS...
