It's time to put all speculation aside. It's that time of year when JUCCO players sign their letters of intent and prepare to transfer to their school of interest. For the 2011 class 'Bama has two verbal commits both DT's. Those with scholarship offers include a DE and an OT. Here's a list:

Quinto Dial, 4-star DT, 6'5'' 310 lbs - Verbal Commit

Jessie Williams, 4-star DT, 6'4'' 340 lbs - Verbal Commit

Cornellius Carradine, 5-star DE, 6'5'' 245 lbs - Prospect

Aaron Douglas, 3-star OT, 6'6'' 290 lbs - Prospect

Usually coaches address positions two years in advance, but if immediate experience is needed they turn to transfers. It's very obvious Alabama needs help on the defensive line. Marcel Dareus, Luther Davis and Chavis Williams will all leave the Capstone through graduation or in Marcel's case as a junior declaring for the NFL.

Last years production on the DL left many of us scratching our heads. The Alabama coaches have keyed in on several blue chip players to help the DL become a strength in 2011. The next few weeks will give us some insight into what type of DL we'll see for 2011.

Dial and Williams are signing with Bama for sure. LT Aaron Douglas is a real possibilty but it looks like he may end up at USC. Cornellius Carradine will most likely end up at FSU. It appears that Bama passed on him believe it or not.

It is interesting that C Corradine (sp?), Lackey, and T. Jackson are all similar sizes (6'5 255). That is the typical size of the Jack in the 3-4. The fact that we recruited all three tells me that either the staff isn't confident in the current Jack's on our roster, or that we're looking to go to more of a 4-3 that Saban ran at LSU. A 255lb Jr. doesn't have the eligibility left to make it to 290lb, at least not naturally, which is needed to be a 3-4 DE. Plus, all three of these JUCO DE's we were recruiting were pass rushers. Look at G. Harbin, he is the same size as the JUCO guys, but he is a man without a position in the 3-4 due to his skill set. Q Dial is a JUCO DE type that I'd expect us to go after. So my question is, do you guy's think Saban would like to incorporate some traditional 4-3 fronts, or do you think all of these JUCO DE's were being looked at as a Jack (which mean's that the staff doesn't have confidence in our current JLB's)?

IMO, both/and is the short answer to your question. The biggest key to running a successful 3-4 defense is to have two shutdown corners... because that defense operates best with multiple blitz packages. IF you believe you have enough animals up front to pressure the QB without blitzing, you run a 4-3. Many LSU fans believed Saban ran the 4-3 while there because he had FAR more DL talent than LB's... and when he moved on to Miami, he had Jason Taylor... who would likely have been a liability in a 4-3.

By this time, the light should have come on with Ed Stinson... and he should be developing about to where CU was at this time last year. However, that has not happened. And with Hubbard being the only other true Jack prospect, I'm assuming they believe they're going to need help there fairly quickly. Another sign that may give an answer to your questions are the numbers of DT's that we are accumulating... there's only so much playing time available in a true 3-4 for DT types.
