I can't believe it took 88 posts for this one to come up. Or maybe I can. These words are rarely—if ever—correct, and not just on this board. They're misused in menus, newspapers, magazines, billboards . . . everywhere the printed word is used!

"It's" is a contraction for "it is" . . . the apostrophe is only needed if you can read your sentence with "it is" in place of "it's."

"Its" is possessive.

"Alabama should be concerned with its offense. It's offensive."

I give people a pass on this one because the rule is stupid. Apostrophes are usually used to denote possession, but in the case of "its", they are not.

For instance:

1. I like Alabama's defense.

Apostrophe used to denote possession.

2. I like Alabama, especially its defense.

Possession denoted, but no apostrophe.

3. I like Alabama; it's the definition of defensive perfection.

Contraction. Completely unrelated to possession, except that the existence of this contraction causes the stupid rule shown in #2, presumably to avoid confusion.

1. Although apostrophes take a beating, commas are also frequently sinned against, as in this sign outside a restaurant: No Dogs Please. Without the comma it's a real libel against canines: their main job is pleasing people.

2. The "nite" and "tonite" spellings aren't strictly wrong. They're hangovers from the 1970s when eggheads decided to "simplify" English spelling. But we peons rebelled and kept our comfortable "right" and "tight" letter forms.

3. Currently eggheads are trying to iron out our irregular verb past tenses: "wreaked" instead of "wrought," and "shined" instead of "shone." I predict they will flop here, too.
