Two Alabama recruits begin spring semester
Two University of Alabama recruits moved into their dorms on Sunday in preparation for enrolling in the spring semester.

Kicker Corey Smith and receiver Chris Jackson both told The Birmingham News that they graduated from high school in December and will join the Crimson Tide football team a semester before their fellow prospects. Classes begin on Wednesday.

"I'm about to move my stuff in right now," Jackson said Sunday afternoon. "I'm excited."

I hope that Smith can compete for the punting and kickoff jobs immediately. We really need someone that can give us a better chance of winning the field position battle.

Kids that graduate early just to come and compete in spring practice don't get enough credit. What they are doing is throwing away their senior year in high school for the embetterment of themselves as a player and the team as a whole. That deserves a definite pat on the back....which Kareem Jackson got with the shot at CB.

I think if more kids realized just how much more fun college at a big time university is than high school a lot more kids would give it a shot.

During my senior year in high school I had fun and just cruised, but looking back at it, I would have rather entered college early and had a blast there instead and got a head start on my life.

I just don't see any way that Smith will NOT be our punter next season. Especially since he's getting to go through Spring....i'll just be shocked if he isn't.

and yes i hope he can boom it to the endzone on kickoffs too....

You can graduate early from Military Prep school. Kareem Jackson did. He graduated early and enrolled at Alabama and went through Spring practice last year.

Kerry Murphy at Hargrave right now could have graduated early but he did not. He is planning on graduating Hargrave in May and if qualified report to Alabama this summer.

I agree. I would have also stayed longer too. 4 years isn't nearly long enough. I should have enrolled in the 7 year program.

Since you brought him up, do you have any updates on how he is doing? Is he going to qualify or his he still a question mark?

Two Bama football commitments hoping to get an edge in the spring
Corey Smith isn't worried about the prom. He's not crying over missing those senior parties that often mark the end of high school.

"I don't think about that stuff," said Smith, a kicker and punter prospect from Musselman (W.Va.) High. "I'm just focused on what I'm doing here."

For Smith and receiver Chris Jackson of McDonough, Ga., "here" means the University of Alabama. They were the only members of the 2008 recruiting class to graduate early, enroll in classes on Wednesday, and begin working out with the football team.
