At least the official didn't chase him all the way over to to the sideline to make the hit, like the last incident involving the USCe game...

I wonder what the NFL would have done to Darby if he'd stiff-armed the ref and continued down the field...

That's exactly what he should have done. Let stripe take care of himself. Of course, this doesn't approach the bean bag to the eye season-ending flag throw...

The video shows that Darby was trying to keep from running through the ref and he ended up on his heels so he went right down. The photos don't show this and are absolutely hilarious.

Yep, Big Zeus. I remember that. He went nuts on Jeff Triplette. It was an accident but I can understand how he could have gotten a little angry. Angry enough to shove the ref to the ground? I dunno.

As for Darby, I'd hate to be in his shoes in the film room. He's gonna get clowned mercilessly.

Well, he was blinded and ended up in the hospital. In fact, did he ever make it back all the way?
No, unfortunately, he never really did.

You are thinking of Orlando Brown, and he was playing for the Browns when he was hit in the eye with a penalty flag from Jeff Triplette while playing the Jaguars. He had some very serious eye injuries resulting from it, and he missed three or four season of action. He later came back a few years later and played for the Ravens for, I think, three years before finally retiring. Before the injury, he was actually one of the top tackles in the league, but after the long hiatus he just wasn't the same.

Anyway, he eventually got his due. He filed a lawsuit against the NFL in 2001 for approximately 200 million dollars, and if I remember correctly Johnny Cochran was actually his lawyer. Anyway, the NFL decided to settle out of court with him. I believe he got somewhere in the neighborhood of 25 million dollars when it was all said and done.

Darby should have run right through him. Lower your head and plow right over him. It isn't a rule that says you have to go around them. If they are in the way they are fair game.

If I were a coach, I'd teach the guys to lower their heads and drill them if they were in the way. They're part of the field, if they can't get out of the way then treat them as such.

I don't think any of the players would like to seriously injure a ref and if he'd continued on his course running hard I don't doubt the ref would have been.

Darby didn't have many options with a defender coming from each side and the ref in front of him.
