I have a 50" LG Plasma, only 720p I would like to replace with one of the newer 1080p sets. Any suggestions?

I just bought a 50" Samsung plasma (720p). Did not see the need to pay for 1080p since nobody broadcasts in 1080p and from what I've read, nobody is planning on it for the forseeable future. I know you can get HD DVDs in 1080p, but I watch so few movies on DVD it's really not worth it to me. So unless you watch a lot of HD-DVDs, a 1080p TV will down-convert the signal to 1080i or 720p anyway...you won't notice the difference.

That said, I still think plasma looks WAY better than LCD. The Pioneer sets looked better than any I've ever seen, but they cost a LOT. I'm usually really up on technology, but figuring out what TV to buy was maddening. I have no regrets with what I got though.

I was told that plasma tvs burn out in less than 10,000 hours of use, while LCD tvs last longer. Is this true?
Plasma Screen Televisions are a waste of money right now,

That technology just isn't were it should be...

They die out easily, and they frequently burn bright colored objects into the screen, creating a "bad reception-like" double image in the background.

Don't waste your money on a plasma screen right now b/c the ENORMOUS difference in price is not worth the slight increase in sharpness,

Everyone should wait a few years for two things:

1. technology will get better
2. the price will go down

get a Hi-Def LCD -- well worth the money, none of the problems of a plasma

If you want to stoke your ego, get a plasma :) but if you'd like to get the same size television for 1/3 the price, go for the HD LCD...

Wrong on all counts except technology gets better and prices go down with time. Plasma TVs have all but solved burn-in issues. You would have to leave the image up for a very long time. Even if you do burn an image in, most have methods to resolve it. Life expectancy is the same as most LCDs at 20,000 hours.

I also found plasmas to be sharper and smoother than LCDs and my 50" plasma was considerably cheaper than just about every 47" LCD.

Two things here. I was looking for good advice not bad.

First. If you properly burn in a screen you won't have the double image problem. Leave the TV on with no picture on the screen for several hours, actually several days. Vacuum tubes used in music applications also need burning in so they don't sound like a spring reverb.

Second. Where the heck are you shopping where you can buy a 50" LCD for 1/3 the price of a 50" plasma?

We have a 50" plasma Panasonic and a Toshiba 32" LCD and a Sony 37" LCD. The plasma really has the best pic, but it does put out the most heat and costs the most to run. It's in the living room and tends to be the "company" TV, while the other two get most of the watching. Of course, all pix are lousy when you're watching LF...

Agreed...LF games actually look better on my old CRT TV than on the plasma (maybe it's just you don't realize how bad the picture is on the CRT). It was hard to make out the details...especially when kicking field goals. I couldn't see the ball in front of the crowd.

Watching the SC-NC game in HD is just a totally different experience than the Bama-OM game on LF.

My wife presented me with a 50" Samsung Plasma for my 50th birthday last March. (She loves me - :D )

We shopped Plasma TV's exclusively and found the make and model we wanted available at ALL the local outlets for basically the exact same price everywhere.

We then shopped it online and found it available for as much as 30% less, MINUS tax.

I saved $850.00 (including tax) over the brickfront price. Shipping was free. Ordered it on Thursday and they delivered it to my doorstep the following Tuesday. It was all very beautiful.

I've read two things about Plasma and Hi-Def:

1. 1080p is wasted on a screen smaller than 50 inches.
2. There will probably be a 60 inch Plasma for under $2000 available by the end of 2007.

I got mine from Buydig, but Butterfly photo and other sites are competitive.

CNET.com will rack 'em and stack'em according to your preferences and give you a list of available retailers according to price.

I bought a 61" DLP (1080P) Samsung over a year ago. There are people who come to my house who simply fall in love with this TV...even though they have HDTV's themselves...the picture is awesome. Also, from the repair standpoint it would only cost around $300 to replace the color wheel...I hear if a Plasma goes out it could cost much more...plus the picture quality on the DLP rivals anything out there.

Well be taking a trip into the big city Wednesday for another look around. I will not have the luxury of shopping by price as there is no Circuit City or Walmart here and internet shipping is out of the question for an item like this, so what's on the floor or can be ordered is what we will settle for. Thanks for the feedback from everyone.

I was looking for good advice not bad.
It wasn't bad advice :) It was advice that you didn't want to hear...

You were offended (as was everyone else that owns a plasma)

Because: If what I said in my previous post is true "and it is" then everyone that has purchased a plasma has wasted money...

So what...?? (I waste money on things too)

I didn't intend to offend anyone -- I obviously did though,

You asked our opinion on a 1080p (they come in LCD also) but you did not indicate that your search would be limited to Plasma Screens.

Your reaction was normal :) It wasn't bad advice, but it was something you didn't want to hear, I apologize for offending, I didn't mean too.

Like I have said before, I have wasted money too! I waste money every day!

If you have the extra cash and it makes you feel better to buy a more expensive television -- then more power to you...

With alot of extra cash, I might buy a Plasma -- Who Knows...??

If Plasma Televisions didn't have the problems that they have and they didn't cost what they cost then I would purposely alter my budget and work towards purchasing one.

Upgrading from a Tube Television to an LCD is a cost effective purchase and a large upgrade in terms of picture quality -- not so for a Plasma -- not when you leap frog the LCD for the Plasma, b/c that is wasting money.

Plasma screens are being sold b/c people are buying them, but that doesn't mean they are worth the purchase...

I guess if you have alot of money it doesn't matter b/c it is still wasting money but wealthy people can afford to waste money and not suffer the consequences.

I was giving honest advice from a middle class point of view AND I was under the assumption that you would be looking at both 1080p Plasma's and 1080p LCD's

If you can afford to purchase a $3,000.00 television then that is GREAT :) I don't care wether you do, but if it makes you feel good then do it b/c we only live once!

But you're still wasting money! :)

Wealthy or Poor -- purchasing a Plasma is wasting money, and I have already listed the reasons,

I'd love to purchase a Plasma, not for the slight picture increase, but so that I could tell my friends that I had one, but I have to pay my rent! LOL :)

I didn't mean to offend anyone that has purchased a Plasma, regardless, they are still wasting money! (most of them know they are anywayz)

Wether you get a Plasma or an LCD I would go with a Panasonic b/c of the great customer service that they offer! -- the downside is the Panasonic price --

I ain't offended, merely amused. :D

I personally find that when I am watching a digital signal on an LCD TV all I can see is 1's and 0's. ;)
