Good. Now maybe he can go buy a hat that fits and hire a personal concierge to tell him how stupid he looks with the one he wears now.

Why do I get the feeling that people will still bash on Saban and his 4 million and not say a word about CLM and his new salary???

First off, there is probably no business that is more "results oriented" than coaching. That said, 34-6 is good...no...GREAT results, no matter how you slice it.

They won't if he is able to show the results that justify his salary...and if they do, shame on them.

I think that is a little much. I don't think you can judge Saban's worth after one season. Not every coach walk into a loaded team in year one like Miles. Carroll had a rough patch before he got things going. Stoops is still winning 10+ games and bringing in conference titles despite the recent bowl woes. He's always in a BCS bowl against a quality opponent and he's been on the raw end the last 4 bowls.

Carroll, Stoops, and Saban easily deserve their pay. They are among the hardest working coaches in D-1 football. Miles success alone puts him in that echelon; "Saban's players" (which is a ridiculous statement any...Saban's players are in Tuscaloosa County...Miles and his staff did most of the developing of those athletes in Red Stick) or not.
Here's the deal...and it is not debatable with any rational person.

You say Carroll, Stoops, and Saban easily deserve their pay. I say, replace Saban in that statement with Miles. Earning your pay means producing results...not working hard TRYING to produce results. That may not be "fair"...but that's life. If I "work hard" at my job, yet don't produce results...guess what? Bye bye job.

Saban earned it while he was at LSU...and may well earn it while he's at Bama. But that remains to be seen. Winning the recruiting NC isn't results. Results are shown on the field (and in the classroom). You seem rational enough to understand that.

Neither Carroll, Stoops, NOR Miles made the kind of $$$ they make now until they won The Crystal...for the school that pays them the $$$.

I'm not in any way bashing Saban here. It is just simple rational. He gets paid more than nearly every coach in the country...and it's for his POTENTIAL to be successful. Pretty much everyone else (save for Chollie Wides) that gets that kind of coin has already EARNED it. That's why some people make a big deal about his salary. If he wins the crystal, or at least makes Bama a perennial player in the chase for the crystal...nobody will have a right to say a word about it.

I don't see anything wrong with this. It's normal for a team to do this after they win a NC. That said, I don't understand why people think he's such a bad coach. I know he took over some amazing talent that Saban brought in, but he was able to win the SEC Championship and the National Championship. I hate to say it, but Miles IS a good coach.

Saban will bring Alabama back on top no doubt, but the West will be determined between LSU and Alabama in the coming years.

2 things in response to this: (1) I don't really care for LM (which is, of course, utterly irrelevant to anyone:cool:); (2) I agree with LSU63 that he's earned it.

Naturally, I'm hoping that LM comes to look severely overpaid for a long time starting in another year or two :biggrin2:, but I'd give it to him based on recent performance.

Kirk Ferentz, however...Kirk Ferentz. Let that one sink in: among the highest paid coaches in America are Nick Saban, Les Miles, Pete Carroll, Bob Stoops, and...*drum roll*...Kirk Ferentz. It just doesn't flow.
Good post...and I agree...that just doesn't look/sound right. But Chollie Weis is still the one that kills me. At least Ferentz did improve his program (before it began to descend back into mediocrity). Chollie was hired based on the reputation that HE was responsible for the Patriot's offensive success. However, they didn't seem to fall off the map when he left. In fact, they became MORE offensively proficient.

They're all being paid for their potential for future success. Past success is rewarded through bonuses.

How many of those coaches have left that school to go elsewhere?

Exactly. If you think Stoops, Carroll, or Miles would go somewhere else and not get paid for what they are worth (proved with the crystal) you're not the rational person you claim to be...

Not so. Stoops is being paid what he's being paid because of a clause in his contract that...if he won the Crystal...he would be the highest paid coach. He did it, and they paid him. EXACT same scenario with Miles, except his clause said top 3. He did, and they paid. Don't know the ins and outs of Carroll's contract...since it isn't easily accessible.

Of course they wouldn't...they're ALREADY getting paid what they are worth. THEY WOULDN'T LEAVE!!! Saban was getting paid what he was worth when he left LSU. Of course times were different, and the salaries weren't as high...but he was right up there with Stoops after he won the Crystal at LSU. He left to, a)try his hand in the NFL...and b)make NFL money.

Here it is. Guys like Rich Rod leave programs like WVU to "get paid what they are worth". But WVU...despite their recent success...isn't an upper echelon program. Guys coaching for the programs in the upper echelon...such as USC, OU, LSU, UF, and others CURRENTLY in the upper echelon aren't going to leave period...unless it's to the NFL. If they choose to do that, they wouldn't expect to be among the highest paid in the NFL...because they haven't proven themselves there yet. But, the $$$ would still probably be better than whatever they are making in college.
