I disagree!

I think seeing it on the big screen, the ref that threw the flag admitted that he goofed and it was the RIGHT thing to do to correct the mistake.

Whether it was an official review or not, why not take advantage of the video evidence?!?
Because, BY RULE, the play/penalty call is NOT reviewable. If you want to review those plays, then change the rule to make it reviewable or give the coaches the right to challenge it (which they did for one year in the NFL).

Once again, if you want to minimize the clown show antics we see with officials across college football, find better officials. And hold them accountable for the ridiculousness we saw in Austin Saturday night.

By rule, it wasn't DPI in the first place...🙄

By rule, a penalty is whatever the official calls. Your opinion nor mine matters. It was called DPI.
The correct procedure is to confer and, if they choose to wave it off, do so, and announce the crowd. This crew did not follow procedure. They announced the DPI, the crowd erupts and after five minutes of trash thrown on the field, they conferred a second time to reverse the call.
That sends a terrible message to every fan base that intimidation of officials works.

After they had the ability to look at the replay several times on the jumbo screen.

I’m pretty sure if the roles were reversed there would’ve been no replay or pow wow.

The second something from the stands hits the field, touchdown opposing team. Another one, another touchdown. If the refs can take touchdowns off the board for behavior, they can touchdowns for behavior as well.
I agree the penalty needs to be something huge during the game and not some stupid fine that UT laughs at. But unfortunately the penalty will never be more than a 15 yard unsportsmanlike penalty. If it was something like points for the other team(I'm assuming almost always the visiting team), then we would have a situation where at terrible call is made against the home team and the visiting team fans start throwing stuff on the field to get some free points.

Any crowd antics that include throwing things on the field should be an automatic 15-yard penalty for that team and loss of possession, etc...end of...stops this in its tracks
Kind of the same that should be the case for fans rushing the field after a win. The team with fans who does that should automatically be forced to forfeit. Then the stupid behavior ends.

My point was that it shouldn't have been called DPI in the first place. The explanation did not match the action however...

If as the SEC explained that the official should have called OPI, then they should have said that and shown it as declined by Texas. That didn't happen, so the official explanation doesn't match as the refs actually waved off the flag. Also, Texas should have been flagged for delay of game for the water bottles...😎

SEC officiating sucks!🙄

The SEC office NEVER made the statement that OPI should have been called. They stated the officials conferred and made the decisions to wave it off, which they are allowed to do.

But even the SEC office stated the crew did not follow protocol.

“While the original evaluation and assessment of the penalty was not properly executed, it is unacceptable to have debris thrown on the field at any time.”

Yeah, my recollection of their statement is wrong.

But I still stand by my end statement!😎

Throwing bottles on the field? Older fans will recall the days of playing the Yellow Jackets in Atlanta. Coach Bryant once wore a football helmet to guard against the bottles. Don't worry about the Texas fans. The SEC has survived ill-mannered fans before...
My grandparents hated GA Tech, which as a kid who grew up in the 80s, I always thought was a strange team for Alabama fans to hate. Other than them playing a few times in the early 80s, I saw no connection. It wasn't until I was a little older that I understood why, with Coach Bryant having to wear a helmet on the sideline as Coke bottle rained down on him. Not sure if that event was related to the Furman Bisher article in The Saturday Evening Post accusing Bryant of fixing a game.

The GA Tech situation grew out of the 1961 game In Birmingham. Alabama LB Darwin Holt landed an elbow to Ga Tech player’s jaw, breaking it. This led to a war of words and accusations between Bryant and Tech Coach Bobby Dodd. Bryant defended Holt, saying Ga Tech players had been throwing elbows all game long (Bryant later showed game film of Ga Tech players doing such). The “bottle throwing”‘ happened on Alabama’s return visit in 1962.

Furman Bisher (Atlanta writer) had written article in 1962 for The Saturday Evening Post basically claiming Bryant was a “dirty coach that taught and rewarded dirty tactics”. (Bisher was sued for libel by Bryant. Bisher claimed he “reviewed” the article but didn’t write it).

In 1964, the Saturday Evening Post again ran with a story, based on a overheard phone conversation by an insurance salesman (a week before the UGA -Bama game) claiming UGA Coach Wally Butts and Bryant had conspired to fix the game. The Saturday Evening Post was sued (again for the second time as Bryant’s libel case was still going on). That case went all the way to the Supreme Court before a verdict in favor of Bryant and Butts.

In 1964 Ga Tech left the SEC to go independent. Many years later in the early 1970’s it was rumored Tech had petitioned to rejoin the SEC only to that petitioned “blocked” by one dissenting member -and many believed it was Bryant and Alabama that blocked them.

Your grandparents and many other Alabamians had a bunch of reasons to hate Ga Tech.

If the SEC is serious about stopping this, forfeiting is the way to stop it. Between people getting hurt tearing down goalposts and negative interactions between players and fans, there’s no reason not to increase the penalty for unauthorized people getting on the field.

I've got a better idea. Rather than forfeiting the game assess a 5 million dollar penalty that is to be paid to the opposing school's football program. Could you imagine Ucheat or Awbarn having to cut a check for $5 million to our football program? LOL!

Maybe if the officials dont call an obvious face mask then fans can throw stuff on the field to stop the game and let it be played on the big screen until they call the face mask?

the officials absolutely fixed the call, it was NOT DPI. I don't think anyone disagrees. However, no one likes when a toddler throws a fit and then they get their way.

Just charge the offending team with a penalty rewarding the opposing team 7 points and then make them kick it off to the opposing team.

Will fix that up right quick.

awarding points is ridiculous. Make it a 15 yard personal foul. If the get a second one, pause the game, kick everyone out unless they have opposing jerseys on.
