Life Without Sportstalk Radio

I quit cold turkey over 2 months ago. When I saw that another player was arrested, I thought, man am I glad I don't have to listen to childish jibberish about this or any other topic. I went the whole spring training without listening to any commentary about Bama needs to do this or any nonsense callers from the Aub nation.

It also seems that the offseason is going much faster. I can get anything I need from Tidefans and other websites. Sportstalk shows are just too mindless in Alabama. I don't think it will ever change with AU and Bama in one state.

If you get tierd of all of the gossip, just turn the channel. Oh, yeah, my blood pressure is much better, also.

I don't listen to it and never have. All I ever hear the few times I have listened to it (years and years ago) is ignorance. It generally gets worse for me when they open up the phone lines to callers.

I hate sports talk radio.

I still listen to it more than I should, but not as much as I used to. Sports talk radio was lousy in Orlando and I've also found it to be lousy in Mobile. Then again, it's lousy on the national scale too. I especially hate the pandering when they interview other talking heads and about every other question the askee? will invariably start his answer with "Good question." The truth is that there are damn few good questions because they're usually the same old questions.

I just had a deck built on the canal behind my house and I spend a lot of time out there fishing and I usually listen to a local station here in Mobile that plays some good old-time gospel music, 960 AM, probably better for my blood pressure anyway.

I used to listen to Finebaum somewhat regularly. I was "in" on the joke, how he plays both sides of the nutty fans and gets them riled up... and I enjoyed it to some extent. He basically stole Jerry Springer's format. A few months ago, though, it got to the point where I really couldn't sit through his negativity and dramatics, anymore.

It's either doom and gloom for the Crimson Tide or doom and gloom for Auburn.

Silly.

I could live without it unfortunately the better half likes to listen in the mornings and now that we work in the same building we ride together.

I think she uses it to help her shape more informed opinions. I form my own opinions and believe that Mike and Mike are second tier ESPN boobs.

She's more informed than me sometimes, though. Even about college football. :p_red:

I must admit I used to be guilty of listening, but no more.
At that time, my work hours had me driving during that time of day and, living in Mobile, my only choices were Finebaum & McCready. Of the 2, I'd have to say old whining Neal annoyed me the most.

It's always been obvious that Finebaum is an act. He says/does whatever garners the most listeners and doesn't really take any of it seriously. In fact, he's probably laughing his rear off whenever the mike is silenced. Neal, on the other hand, took himself, and every pronouncement coming out of his mouth, far too seriously. He would become angry whenever questioned and would cut callers off if they did so. Neal was never wrong-just ask him. He also persisted in making fun of the entire state of Alabama, and her citizens, as if he, growing up in Louisiana and Mississippi, were so superior.

Even though it's been a while since I listened, let's just say I was very happy to hear that Neal was sent packing.

I wouldn't mind seeing sports talk radio cease, especially where I live.

It's one of the few professions where you're overpaid to be an idiot.

Actually, this is true. My sister was his assistant/fixer for one of his book tours so she got to see him on the air several times as well as get to know him on a personal level. She said he was a great guy, but yes, most of the time during his show he is laughing his butt off. She told me she was shocked when she first walked in the studio to hear Vickers and Finebaum screaming at each other, btu when she looked through the glass the were doubled over with laughter.

You're exactly right about PF. All he's doing is jerking the chain of those dumb enough to take him seriously and he's became a rich man doing it. The really sad thing is that those who complain the most about him are the ones who are doing the most to ensure his success.

McCready has serious ego problems, evidently his Mommy praised little Neil so much as a child that he really thinks his poop doesn't stink. A shrink would probably have a field day with him.

Used to listen to JDub & Shaman (sp?) on FoxSports' "Out of Bounds" show in the mornings (nat'l broadcast coming from CA). Now that I'm packing both an ipod and an itrip, I find that I'm spending much more time listening to (a) my music of choice, and (b) my podcasts of choice. And none of said podcasts are of sports talk radio. (I do listen to a pretty decent Christian apologist from CA now & then, but zero sports talk)

Life's good. "News from Lake Woebegone" is a most excellent "unwinder" on the way home in the afternoons/evenings...

I still enjoy listening to some local sports talk. It's a good way to keep up with the sports arena and keep up to date while I travel to and from work. Once I'm out of the truck, no more talk radio, though. However, I will listen to ESPN Radio on my computer at work. It's good back ground noise if I'm not listening to Sirius online.

I would add ESPN-TV to sportstalk radio. I've not watched ESPN, at all, for the last 3 months. My only exceptions will be Bama games, occasionally other football games, and an occasional baseball game. Aside from that, I have no use for ESPN anymore.

I've also noticed how more and more of the "questions" are not questions at all, but statements that start with the words, "Talk about...."

As in, "Talk about winning the SEC championship and what it means to you" ... "Talk about how the NFL is changing over the past few years" ... etc.

Maybe I'm just picky, but it strikes me as an intellectually lazy way to interview someone. "We don't really have any insightful questions to ask, so please just talk." :)

ooooooh....I can't go to bed at night without my favorite show; Baseball Tonight! I like it as much as College Football Countdown and College Football Tonight, or whatever it is!

The worst thing about talk radio is how they harp on a particular subject all day long. I remember when Castille got arrested, they talked about it all day long on jox 100.5. I caught a few minutes of it on the way to work on the opening drive, then I heard a few minutes of it on lunch on the jox round table, and then of course I heard Finebaum talk about it after I got off of work. From 6am to 6pm!

I mean seriously, I had a hard enough time giving a 5 minute speech in my college speech class. How in gods name do you talk about one subject for 12 straight hours? And more importantly, why do you want or need that?

I reached my breaking point a couple months ago. I havent listened to sports talk radio since. Its a waste of time. They are in the business to spread their negative opinions about sports and thrive on stirring people up to join in.
