So far I’m not impressed. Looks to me like he’s already had a few choke jobs. That being said I’m willing to give him four years. When it comes to Bama hoops, im a realist.
Year one and he just got a huge win. If the team was entirely healthy we would have 12 or more wins right now even playing the kind of schedule we have played. The guy knows his stuff and when given an entire roster of his style of players Bama will be tough to deal with.

This is the quintessential Bama basketball post. Doesn't watch much basketball, but posts about how the first year coach isn't doing that good mere minutes after the final horn sounds on a 19 point win over your #4 ranked instate rival.

Edit: I was off on my time. The game ended about an hour after his post. He probably posted just before the half.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this team and their style of play this season. I felt like we were right there even with the bad injury luck. The game last night was a huge milestone for CNO. Proud of him and the team.

Here is where returners stand on FT% from last year to this year:

Name2018-192019-20
Kira Lewis.783.792
John Petty.707.745
Herb Jones.495.569
Alex Reese.755.733
Galin Smith.444.385
Just a group of average to bad FT shooters. Happens I guess. Seen teams like it in the past...weirder that they aren't a bad 3pt shooting team

I haven't watched a ton but every bit I have watched I've seen a lot more good than bad. Oats is the next Bruce Pearl or Billy Donovan. I truly believe that.

All I'm saying is that Football-Only Gumps can jump on the bandwagon now and no questions will be asked.

The questionnaire will be more difficult when we're winning the SEC in 2-3 years and seats will be limited!

fyi: I am 100% buying a faculty/staff tix package for basketball next year. I regret I didn't this year because the team has become quite fun to watch.

Mrs. Basket Case and I were in the stands last night.

It was the best win since an Anthony Grant team beat Kentucky several years and two coaches ago.

On the way back to the car, I told Mrs. Basket Case that, as great as the UK win was, this one was better. That win against Kentucky felt flukish. We were unconscious hot for the first half of that game, and built a 20 point or so lead at the half. Then held on for dear life as Kentucky fought back. If the game were 41 minutes long, we'd have lost.

Last night, wasn't a fluke....it was a statement. I see it as far different from the years-ago Kentucky win because:
- We built a lead in the first half despite being badly out-rebounded for the first 15 minutes, a function of having absolutely no inside presence at all.
- Then, when Auburn made its comeback in the second half, we didn't flinch. We just kept playing our game, and the shots started falling again.
- After trailing by as much as 14, Auburn cut the lead to 3 and had all the momentum. We hung in there and fought back ourselves. That's something no Grant or Johnson team would have (or could have) done. We haven't had a coach since Wimp whose team wouldn't have folded in the face of that
- Alien body-snatchers must have taken the team at halftime. After a slow start (1 - 4 or 1 - 5) early in the first half we looked like we knew what we were doing at the free-throw line the whole last 20 minutes, and made pressure FTs to keep Auburn from chipping away at the lead. It literally didn't look like the same team.
- In previous years, we depended on one player to carry us. This year, scoring and rebounding is spread out much more evenly. Kira Lewis was the scoring hero last night, but a bunch of players made material contributions.

This team is flawed, and has a ceiling lower than we would like. Shooting is streaky. Last night's second half performance notwithstanding, FT shooting isn't where it needs to be on a consistent basis. Oats can cover that lack of inside game only so much for only so long. It's going to bite us more than once. We'll have to rehab and recruit our way out of that.

But they play hard. They're mentally tough in a way we haven't seen since Wimp. On the inside, they looked like boys vs. men, but didn't flinch one teeny bit. Oats is making the absolute most of the material we have.

Flawed though it may be, this team....and more importantly, this coach.....deserves our enthusiastic support.

I posted this in the game thread but bears repeating. We are 7-3 in the last 10 games. The 3 losses are on the road by a total of 17 points.

The reason I felt like we had a good chance last night is that lessons learned against UF and UK would benefit us against AU. I think you're writeup sort of backs that up.
