Where's the best place in T-town to get fresh cut meat? I've been to South's Finest Meat in Tuscaloosa, but I haven't checked out their place in Northport... has anyone else tried it?

Dartigan,
I have been racking my brain trying to remember my buther's name when I lived in T-town and just remembered his first name. It was Calvin and he worked at the old Food World on Skyland Blvd. I think the store moved to the other side of McFarland but, still on Skyland. I have no idea if he is still around, but if you find him you'll be glad you did. Not only would he cut and trim the steaks to perfection, but he would actually call me at work if he was about to mark down filets or ribeyes for quick sale. There's no telling how much money he saved me over the years.

Good luck tracking him down.

One more thing, Dartigan. You mentioned South's Finest Meats. The owners Dave and Rick are great guys! I have been buying meat from the since before they opened South's Finest. I have always bought my Boston Butts and shoulders from the for the BBQ competitions. As a matter of fact, I called them yesterday in a pinch and they sent me a gallon of sauce that I can't find in Birmingham on one of their vendor's trucks so I wouldn't have to drive to Tuscaloosa.

Most of the meat I've bought didn't require any cutting, but they can take care of most of your needs and they will go out of their way to keep you happy.

I don't know about Ttown, but I have an uncle that has been a butcher all his life that runs a grocery store in Berry. Berry is only about 30min north of Northport. He has the best meat anywhere. When we go visit, we take coolers and buy all our meat there. His prices are good to. The name of the store is the Berry Market. It has a sign outside that says "Smith's famous Meats"

I forgot to say, my uncle's name is Donald Smith. Just tell him Tim sent you. You can't miss his store. Going east into Berry, it's on the left Before you get to Piggly Wiggly. He cut meat at the Pig for years, then bought his own store!

There is really, to my knowledge, no specialty meat/butcher shop in Ttown.

The best meat is found at Winn Dixie stores in Ttown. Ask the Manager running the meat counter for his best selection &/or advice on a particular cut of meat.
