Sometimes, as a writer, you hastily put something out there you later wish you could have back. Upon learning about Tyrone Prothro's devastating and avoidable season-ending injury, I instinctively lumped it together with Brodie Croyle's season-ending injury last year under similar circumstances, and let Shula have it. In reality, as many, many 'Bama fans pointed out to me, nearly every other coach in America would have done the same thing. In hindsight it was just one of those freaky things that no coach could have predicted. So, to Shula and the Tide faithful, I apologize.

It takes a lot of courage for someone to apologize; even more so to apologize for calling someone stupid. I appreciate Mandel's apology and hope that this will be his lesson think before he speaks.

I sent him a rip-roaring email

One in which I mentioned Paterno, Carroll, Brown at Texas and a few others.

Then I told him to picture Phat Phil in his mind and have a happy halloween

Don't count on it . . . Mandel's style is to put his mouth (or keyboard) into motion before his brain is engaged.

Upper management probably made him apologize...fearing Bama fans would only buy 1 million SI's with Brodie on the cover instead of 2 million.

I can honestly say I'm shocked someone would be man enough to retract and apologize for that comment. Wow.
I'm shocked that Stewart Mandel, specifically, was man enough.

He is not retracting calling Coach Shula stupid, he is saying that nearly every other coach in America is stupid too. After all, it was avoidable to a really smart coach, like he would be if he were coaching.

The problem with these dickweed writers is that they don't have enough class or intelligence to edit themselves just prior to sticking both feet, shoes and all, into their mouths. The old school guys gave you that kind of reporting and analysis. The upstarts like Mandel are just that.....upstarts.

I love to read several sports writers, and they often can get some amazing research and put some interesting perspectives out there, but for us as sports fans to give them the credibility to critique coaches or managers as either ignorant, brilliant, etc. in the first place is, well, for lack of a better word...stupid
