ESPN.com - SEC breakout players for 2010

1. Alabama defensive end Marcell Dareus: Several in and around Alabama’s program think Dareus will be the next great defensive lineman for the Crimson Tide. He certainly made his presence felt in the BCS National Championship Game in January when he was named the game’s Defensive MVP after returning an interception 28 yards for a touchdown and knocking Texas quarterback Colt McCoy out of the game. Dareus only started in four games last season, but he still wound up with 9.5 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks. Look for those numbers to soar in 2010, and look for him to emerge as one of the most dominant defensive linemen in the league.
2. Florida QB John Brantley
3. Vanderbilt S Sean Richardson
4. Arkansas RB Ronnie Wingo Jr
5. LSU WR Rueben Randle

They also have a list for the other conferences as well.

I think the darkhorse on our defense is Nico Johnson. I expect him to surprise some people who think we might be soft up the middle without McClain.

Maybe it's just me, but I hate the term "breakout." :mad2:

Apparently ESPN did not watch Marcel this past season and in the BCSCG.

Enjoy watching him in 2010 my fellow Bama fans. I would not be surprised to see him getting ready for the NFL draft this time next year. Maybe a possible lock-out for the 2011 NFL season will bring Marcel back for his senior year. I think we better get accustomed to losing a minimum of two to three juniors every year to the NFL draft.

No disrespect to Mark Ingram, but Dareus could have easily been the MVP of the BCSNC game. He single handedly changed the complexion of that game...

bryan, you should have put "breakout" in the thread of football cliches you hate. :biggrin I also agree with rgw that Nico Johnson alongside Donte will be a nightmare for RBs and QBs next year.

Marcell WAS the Defensive MVP and Mark was the Offensive one. You remember Marcell being speechless?

Despite having to replace 3 secondary, I think it will be a surprising strength of the team and Dre K will be a star. Also agree on Nico and Donta being significant. I actually think some of the writers have it right putting Bama at No. 1 despite losing 9 on the D.

Saban's constantly moving players in and out has given invaluable experience to last year's "non-starters" such as Dareus.

I'd have to put Mark Barron right there with, if not better than Marcell as a breakout type player. He had an incredible year coming from nowhere.

I missread it, I thought they WERE talking about THIS year. I agree that it's a year too late for both Marcell and Mark.

:BigA: I think it will be Julio year to shine and I believe Lacy would be the one to have a breakout season if were not for Ingram and Richardson! It sure is great to be in this kind of position!

Prior to the national championship game, there were probably very few people outside of Alabama that even recognized Marcel Dareus' name. I don't recall him being even mentioned as "honorable mention" on any All-SEC teams.
I think Dareus could be an All-American in 2010. I would imagine that would classify as "breakout", even if he's already proven to be a good player. Most breakout players are probably already well-known to their fanbase...

What can I say except: I believe Marcell Dareus began his 'Breakout' year
mid-year, last year.

By the time the season was over, Marcell had became an 'Animal'...
(Ask Colt McCoy, if he's got his senses back yet... I think Colt was kinda shell shocked by Marcell. The 'Dead Arm' Lasted long after that game too.
It's a cinch that McCoy didn't want anymore or Mr. Dareus.)

I've watched that play, and the Dareus interception, so many times that I've lost count. My response is still WOW!
