Of all the freshmen in Alabama's highly ranked recruiting class, Ingram was the surprise contributor in the opener. He was listed as the co-backup along with sophomore Terry Grant going into the game.
Ingram, from Flint, Mich., carried the ball 17 times for 96 yards, helping Alabama dominate the clock. Alabama held the ball for 41:13, compared to Clemson's 18:47.

Coach Steele was also named coordinator of the week, and Jim McElwain was in the "Others considered" category.

Coffee is probably the best all-purpose back, Ingram is more of a bruiser, Grant is the speed guy, and Upchurch is the pass catcher.

We'll probably see more of Grant or Ingram depending on the opponent. A bigger team like LSU might be weaker against Grant's speed. Smaller teams will get more of Ingram's size.

I think to classify Ingram as a bruiser may not be giving him enough credit (don't get me wrong i love bruising running backs) from everything ive heard he is very very fast now he is able to pound the ball like a bruiser but i think we have yet to see what he can do when he breaks a hole for a 20-30 yard gain there were a couple of runs saturday (like the one were he leaped over the downed linemen) were he looked very fast my point is that he may be much more than a bruiser. don't get me wrong i love the guys physicality. Im so excited about this guy.

You know I must say that I remeber saying last year that the only thing we were missing from the class was a top running back. Boy I was wrong. Yet another thing that makes Saban great, an eye for talent. This kid was no where on the national radar and yet comes in and went to work. Saban has an eye for not only talent but leadership and character (the real kind not that excuse used on the plains). This kid is special and I was shocked.

In the end it was not a bowers, jones, or pryor which was on eveyones radar that won this honor but rather someone was in the shadows. Congrats Mark you earned it my friend!!! Thanks to Saban for finding him.

I may be wrong but the way I took it and the way his Grandfather said it was that Mark may have found us. He said Marcus, as he calls him, did extensive work on his computer on different teams, their Coaches returning backs and the school . Said he was interested at one time in Fla. He said he signed late. Am I wrong here?

And...much deserved kudos to Coach Pendry for excellent...no, STELLAR...play of the Oline all night long. I've been waiting for this level of play.

Heck the whole programs deserves national acclaim....guess that SI thing agrees!

First thing I wanted to convey is Mark Ingram definitely should not be classified as "a bruising back." Don't get me wrong he will lower his shoulder and run some people over but he is so much more than that. This kid was an all-state sprinter. He has top end speed. He might not beat Terry Grant in the 40 but I guarantee he could run with anyone on the team the length of the field. He hits the hole hard, can make people miss, and word is he's greatly improved his blocking and pass catching. Mark Ingram might be the most complete back we've had in a while.:BigA:

Certainly a lot more of the players should also be mentioned in their own categories (positions) and I'm sure they will rightfully get the praise too they deserve..........soon!

I just could NOT believe how hard Mark ran and just lowered his shoulders and kept those feet moving to gain more yards.
