We put up quite a few good shots last night that just refused to go in. If we had hit half of those we win by 20 but for some reason they rimmed out instead of staying down.
I'd add to this that I'm glad we have games like this where we have to gut it out to win. Keeps the guys grounded as well as giving them confidence for future games we have to gut out.

Congrats on the win, guys!

That said......I think losing Wrightsell is having a significant negative impact on your game right now.

That was a tough loss! :(
Yes and no. We crushed UNC in Chapel Hill. Got up 17 last night and then went cold. It happens. Nate is playing with his food a bit. We’re fine.

I posted during the game that I didn't know how Oats figured out who to play and I think some took that as a complaint. I meant it as a statement of amazement. I posted right after that I don't know the method to his madness hoping folks would get it.

Coach Oats is, as @CajunCrimson mentioned, working through various combinations and collecting data (maybe in his head as well as on paper). He has done an excellent job at this each season and I think he's getting things lined up for this season in a big way as well.

On another note, Reid has shown flashes from the start of the season. Last night, there were times when I wondered if maybe he was the best player on the floor; especially taking into account his size along with his skills. I'm getting ahead of myself, but I want Reid and Philon back next season...

I defer to your expertise and thank you for your reply. And I know you'll be fine. That was never in question, for me. Too much talent....along with a solid head coach and staff!

In looking at the team stats for this season.....Wrightsell is ranked third in scoring - averaging 11.5 per game. With Nelson and Sears ranked above him - averaging 12.5 and 17.5 per game, respectively. 4th in ranking is Philon, with the same as Wrightsell - 11.5 pts per game.

Then he's ranked #1 in 3 PT % (among those with 3 or more games played on the season) - averaging 42.2%

But I was just going by the optics of what I saw while watching the games. He seemed to really be a big asset to the team.

great shooter. Dependable. Not a great dribble drive guy. Liability on defense. He just brought a lot of calm and maturity. He was always in control. We miss that part. Good leader.

I hate to say it out loud, but this team is not going to the Final Four shooting the three the way they are right now. IDK what's happened to it. I know we lost our best outside guy, but Youngblood is supposed to be even better. I hope he can make up the difference. We had two air balls tonight, one by Youngblood himself, I think. Outside Sears, has anyone 3 percentage improved over last season, even our transfers. I thought Holloways had, but know, IDK...
Couple of thoughts.

First, I don't think we are anywhere close to clicking/peaking as an offensive unit. The sub rotations, IMO, have been very cluncky all year long. Maybe Youngblood, when he gets his legs under him will make this run smoother as he probably picks up for some of Wrightsells' minutes.

And yes, while we are struggling with threes, Youngblood, once up to game speed/conditioning will probably help. I also think we need to get Mallette more shots. Conversely, Philon and Sherrell need to take fewer threes. And, for the life of me, I don't know what in the world is wrong with Stephenson's shot.

It seems like Philon is getting better every game and at this point still want him to shoot away. That will keep d having to play on and help his drives. Sears still gets a little selfish and hate the end of half with him dribbling and taking bad shot. Still playing to much like JQ did a little. (That’s being hyper critical though so not much complaint) Agree Sherrell needs to take less shots but he is wide open on them so it’s hard to stop when it’s technically good shots.
Also agree I want to see Mallette involved more, thinking he is still getting into game shape.
Stevenson shot has been bad very hit and miss/mostly miss since he has been here. He has underperformed this year on offense. Not sure I see NBA after this season even though he probably leaves. Still awkward in his movement and not strong. His defense has been great though so kind of a wash at least.

If we had shot 3s at only a mediocre level, we would have won by double digits.

Good news is that we showed we could handle a big man at least to the point that he didn't dominate the game. Last year, that type of player beat us bloody. Omoruyi has his flaws, but he's doing what he was brought in to do.

More good news is that, despite occasional lapses, defensive effort was more consistent than last year. The most glaring lapse was when a Creighton guard got hot from 3 in the last few minutes, and we didn't do a good job of staying on him.

Bad news is that we continue to struggle shooting 3s. Sure, there were a few that were a bit forced. But most were open, the kind Oats wants us to shoot. They're just not falling. Why, I don't know.

Against Creighton, we shot an anemic 20%. If not for Sears going 4 of 7, we would have been horrendous. When this turns around and we get into the 30 - 35% range, we'll be formidable.

Also, I read somewhere that we were 1 for the last 14 of the first half (2s and 3s). I knew we had gone through a cold spell, but I didn't realize it was that bad.

More good news is that, despite a glaring hole in our game right now, we're still beating good teams.

I'm hoping that, as Youngblood comes up to speed, he'll more than overbalance the loss of Wrightsell. Their 3 pt average is very similar, IIRC...
I think the addition of Youngblood/Mallette will more than make up for Trelly's absence. We might lose a bit on 3 point percentage, but we'll play better defense and have a more diverse offensive attack with these two guys. Analytics-wise, it should be a clear win. Hate it for Wrightsell though.
