Somehow, we rank first in rebounds - and Florida third - nationally, but based on tonight we aren’t in their neighborhood on the boards. If we can’t get a call for being pulled down to the floor or having our backs climbed on, we aren’t on the same planet.

That’s concerning, because that’s not a hot or cold stat like shooting. Just somewhat even rebounds would’ve meant a win tonight.

We are a finesse team. And when the other team is allowed to play rugby, it just throws us off of our game completely.

I think that’s why we will do well in the tournament.

I’m starting to wonder if State is just a little overrated. I thought we finally hit our grove but it hasn’t materialized again.
Don't give up yet. The end of the season is beginning to eerily mirror last season. Last season ended in a Final 4 run, so we're just going to have to see what happens in the big dance. As someone pointed out earlier, this may be the toughest final stretch in the history of college basketball. We played well enough to win at Tennessee, but the ball didn't bounce our way in the end. It happens sometimes. Tonight we haven't looked great, but we're all also gassed. Win or lose, having this final stretch as experience will help us greatly in the tournament. We just have to rest up, and hopefully get Reid back in the tournament. Don't give up yet. We have the best coach in college basketball (sorry Dannyboy), and he's trying his hardest to win us a national championship. Sometimes the ball doesn't fall the way you want, but keep playing these tough games, and eventually we will win them.

Well said. And thanks for such a mature post. I appreciate it.

Got to say the home crowd for a top 10 matchup looked and sounded bad. Seemed like a bad atmosphere especially on senior night.

We don’t match up well with Florida who is big and can score a lot of points. It still will come down to matchups in the tournament. A lot of the other conferences don’t have teams that can put up 85+ points which they will need to do to beat us imo.

I hope so. As Bilas said a couple times tonight, the first half of the tourney would be welcome relief compared to the back half of the conference schedule. If we keep our heads down, hopefully this will all pay off later this month.

Now 1-5 against the other top 6 in the conference. After Auburn got shellacked last night, you think we have a shot Saturday? That will make a 2-5 end to the regular season. Oats is going to have to reevaluate his program and figure out how to inject more toughness and defense to win at the highest levels. And he’s probably learned not to run his mouth so much in the offseason about his team being good enough to win a national championship. I hope so at least. Very disappointing!

At least at this point, I feel like we have very much underachieved in the regular season given the preseason hype. A win Saturday would slightly improve that, but in the end, the team that we were supposed to be doesn’t lose every single game against Auburn, Florida, Mizzou, and Tennessee. Maybe split, but not losing every one.

With that said, there is reason for taking an optimistic view. We’ve suffered injuries - if Reid and Youngblood were 100% the whole year we likely do better. Three of those four teams play a brand of ball that give us a lot of trouble - and not many tourney teams can do that. Unlike many teams who had their best opponents spaced out, we had them bunched up. Our seniors, looking at the end of their careers, might suddenly rise up and insist on being remembered for the group who pushed Bama to the top.

Ready to move into tourney season and put the regular season to bed!

This is all correct. And you can throw Wrightsell in there too. But this year, with the SEC getting 12 to 14 teams in the tournament, it won’t be long before we run into one. And it will probably be a good one or someone playing really well. It will be hard to be confident for sure.

We may not deserve him as a coach if this is a common feeling. This is the kind of stuff that will make him leave.
