Melick: Is new NCAA rule aimed at stopping Alabama's Nick Saban?

The text message rule, aka, the Urban Meyer rule. And, now the no spring visit rule, or the Nick Saban rule. Pathetic when hard work is called into question by slackers taking the easy road.

Surprise, surprise. The NCAA is a joke. They hate Bama cause we will be successful again in spite of NCAA sanctions and penalties, and if not for Roy Kramer, they'd of given the death penalty. They HATE Bama.

The NCAA is worried about how much money they can make, and how much power they can wield. They don't care about ANY student-athlete, and only about Big 10 and Pac 10 schools and of course Notre Dame. If Bama, it's boosters, or some bum who found a Bama t-shirt and wore it, were to do even one of the things USC, OSU, or ND has done, we'd be done. Sorry to rant. Another stupid rule from a stupid bunch of people.

If I'm not mistaken CNS likes this rule. It takes the grey area out of in-school visits. Remember the inappropriate amount of conversation CNS had with a few recruits that got blown out of proportion? This rule prevents that from happening. It won't hurt or hinder the University in any way. No HC can visit. This is an appropriate correction to a hastily conceived rule.

I look at it this way ..... Broaden or narrow the scope of recruiting. It won't matter. Saban is a great recruiter; few are in his league. (It's like trying to Tiger-proof a golf course. At the end of the day, you still have to beat the best. Very hard to do.) And once Bama returns to the elite and competes for conference and national titles, it'll be just that much easier for Saban to bring in the best talent.

Reread the article. Coach Saban doesn't like the rule about spring visits. The other coaches in the SEC didn't either till Coach Saban came back into the league. Coach Saban has stated he visited roughly 100 high school spring practices last year. That's the problem. Other coaches didn't want to spend that much time analyzing high school players. In other words, they don't want to work. They want to handicap someone who does.:mad2:

That is why so many coaches voted in favor of the rule change. CNS and UM are busting their tail on the recruiting trail, while others are sitting around hoping the prospects come to them.

"The intent of the (old) rule was when a head coach from a big-time program walked into a (high) school in the spring to evaluate, he couldn't have contact with prospects," said Greg Sankey, SEC associate commissioner for NCAA compliance. "But with the popularity of our head coaches, the rule put them in difficult situations. There have been enough enforcement issues over this issue lately that we felt the best thing to do was remove (the head coaches) from the difficult situation entirely."

Saban said he agrees with the conference's position.

"We are put in difficult situations," he said. "We walk into a school and people want autographs, pictures, but I always tell coaches, `I can't talk to a prospect at all.' And I never do."
Does anything prevent assistants from visiting and evaluating? Are they not capable of spotting the proverbial diamond in the rough and telling CNS about them?

I don't see what the big deal is. Coaches are celebrities and they can't avoid incidental contact without coming off like jerks. This rule prevents that situation from occurring. It's not a bad rule. It is an attempt to fix a poorly written rule.

Personally, I don't understand why coaches were prevented from speaking with the players in the first place, but they made the rule and found it difficult to enforce. This eliminates the gray area. I ,for one, am happy in a way. Now, no one can accuse us of improper contact. CNS wasn't even there.

Ray, Ray, Ray, come on now just say it. You can not stand the fact that Alabama and CNS are kicking the barn's rear end in recruting and leading the nation in the team recruiting rankings. Don't try to read the mind of CNS and put your words in his mouth, it just doesn't sound right CNS with you speaking for him.

Saban also knows he has been frequently accused of secondary violations such as illegal contact in the spring. And if Saban is guilty of violating the rules, then he should be punished.
Why not a feel good story for the Bama Nation on how well CNS is doing in recruiting, especially since he is in the job for just over a year now? You do want your readers to enjoy what you write don't you? ;)

Coach Saban is a great recruiter because he works at it, his assistants work hard on it. He knows what kind of player it takes to build a successful team and apparently is very straight forward with recruits.
So, really, if they change the rules and treat everybody alike then Saban will still be the best recruiter around,

Next thing you know the NCAA will impose a rule that the HC must sleep at least one hour a night during recruiting season, solidifying their position as anti-Saban.

Even then, the Sabanator will probably still get in trouble from the NCAA for sleeping with his eyes open.

Maybe it is just coincidence that the first year Saban is back in the Southeastern Conference, the league's coaches overwhelmingly vote in favor of the rule, which, just a few years ago, many of these same coaches voted against.
Its ashame that other coaches voted this. Getting your butts kicked by Coach Saban and Coach Meyer is embarrassing. You can bet the Big 10 voted for this, all ten plus. Only Ohio St. is in the Top 10 team at number 9 in recruiting. That could change tomorrow and they could easily be out of the top 10, leaving no team from Big 10 in the top 10. Get all that. Those coaches are not willing to put it all on the line for the money they make and it shows.
