Why is it called the National championship tournament?
Can we get a clarification here? Michigan State is one of six B1G hockey teams that are D1 (i.e., can play in the Frozen Four if they make it that far) and would be likely to face other D1 (for hockey) programs such as RPI, Union, Lake Superior State, Mankato, etc.It is for the Div III hockey National Championship.
This is intramural club hockey. Club hockey has 3 divisions in it and it is not NCAA sanctioned. The higher the classification...the closer you get to Div 1 NCAA varsity. Bama is following the model that Penn St & Arizona St(NCAA Div 1 next year) have followed to get to NCAA Div 1 hockey. Stranger things have happened. I'm not going to say its going to happen but you never know. They have had good success and have had good attendance #'s in Pelham. Who would have thought UAH would be Div 1 hockey. Can we get a clarification here? Question is, how can a school field D1 and DIII teams in the same sport?
By the way, the B1G also has welcomed a new D1 lacrosse school into the conference - for lacrosse only. That would be "otherwise" DIII school Johns Hopkins. But the Blue Jays are not playing a DIII schedule in lacrosse at the same time they're going against B1G opponents - so back to my question: Can a school have teams competing in two NCAA Divisions in the same sport?
Oh, and the long-range question: Any chance 'Bama ever gets up to D1 in hockey? Earle will have to tell the story of the "more refined and erudite" northern extension center's foray into the heartland whilst competing as a D1 hockey school. Penn State has made the jump - a $90M husband-and-wife alumni bequest will get you a new rink and stature in a hurry.
Yes Bama as a club lacrosse team ClickyThanks for that, im4datide - does 'Bama also have a club lacrosse team and if so, any idea of their quality? What a great contact sport of its own - believe Florida to be the SEC pacesetter for LAX, and maybe more conference schools will follow into D1. Maybe even 'Bama - now that 6-4, 305-pound attackman Richie Petitbon III is on scholarship (well, football scholarship and there's not a snowball's chance in Haiti he would be allowed to play college lacrosse at Alabama).
