Re: mike sherman????

I am also a huge Packers fan. That being said, if Sherman is walking the sidelines at the capstone, I will practice my swan dive from the new endzone's upper level.

Re: mike sherman????

don't want to turn this into a ozzie thread but he's stated he's always wanted to come back in that capacity on numerous occasions. i think law states that he have to have a masters degree or something to that effect. i would hope that they could weave their way around it. if i remember correctly that he doesn't have the "necessary" requirements.

it would be a huge shot in the arm to the university and he'd clean house and run our program back to where it belongs. FOR GOOD!
Did some research a while back and found Ozzie does have a masters and would be fully qualified. Not sure what the masters was in, maybe Human Resources.

One of the main obsticles is he has a child in school that he doesn't want to move. Another is the AD job at Bama may be a pay cut for him.

Re: mike sherman????

if we hired mike sherman, i would personally drive to tuscaloosa and punch mal moore in the nose!

on a related note, i don't disagree with the shula firing, but at the same time, i think moore is dinosaur and a buffoon and should resign his position.

he's been at the epicenter of all this madness basically from day one. what accountability has he shown throughout all the scandals, bad hires, etc?

considering the fact that college football is now little more than a marketing industry, you'd think that we would have modernized our athletic department and gone after corporate executive types rather than good old boy cronies. apparently, we have more lessons to learn than simply figuring out how to pick a head coach.

Re: mike sherman????

Here is the article for any that want to read for themselves what it says:

Mike Sherman

I am not sure that we should go after an NFL coach. But if we did, Sherman has been a good coach. Though I really do not know anything about his character or past relationships with previous players. He runs a West Coast Offense.... right??? Wouldn't he be another that wants to call his own plays???

Serious discussion is appreciated but Mike Sherman?

It should be against the law to be drunk this early in the morning.
What I've seen of the Texans this year can pretty much be summed up as this - reruns from Saturday's Bama games, except with less defense.

Bayou: In the "for what it's worth column" Ozzie Newsome has stated publically that once he finished a "few more things" with the Ravens and when his kids were out of high school, he would like to move back to Alabama and "if" there were an opportunity to return to the Capstone he would love to look into that.

I don't have a link because this was something that was written and read probably two or three years ago. However, his kids have to be really close if not actually being out of high school and what he seemed to infer about the Ravens is taking shape this year. If they win the Super Bowl (and I know that's a long way off) he will likely "retire" from the NFL and move his family back to Alabama. At that point, I'm sure we would find out if he still has an interest or not.

Oh, one more thing...Ozzie doesn't need the money so that would not be a motivating factor for him "if" he decided to come back. He would do it for the Love of the university and to help TRULY return us to our place among college football's elite programs. Again, anything he has said was several years ago and he may not have an interest any longer in coming back to work for the university.

Re: mike sherman????

trenda how am i reaching when you compare mike sherman and gene stallings. one has a national title and 70 wins in 7 seasons. one was a mediocre to bad hc in the nfl.
First of all, I never accused you of reaching, that was your comment to me when I posted that the same thing could have been said about Stallings when he came from the NFL.

forgot to say that i cringed when i saw his mug. he was horrible.
Second, I never compared Gene Stallings to Mike Sherman. I said the same thing could have been said about Stallings during the coaching search in 1990. I'd take Stallings any day. However, to compare Stallings record at Bama to Sherman's NFL record is apples to oranges. Who's to say that Sherman couldn't do the same thing at the college level - especially at Bama?

I love Stallings to death; but his record at A&M and with the Cardinals was not necessarily one that brought forth a lot of credibility and confidence to his ability to win big at Bama. It was/is a perfect example that good coaches may not do well unless they are in the right situation. As it turned out, Stallings was not the right man for the job when he was at A&M and with the Cardinals. However, he was a perfect fit for Bama.

I'd bet the house that, had there been a TideFans message board back in 1990, that there'd be a multitude of people saying that Bama shouldn't hire Stallings because his record as a HC was horrible. Just as you've stated about Sherman.

Re: mike sherman????

Whew! Ok, I've calmed down a bit since early this morning I think. Man I was freaking out though for a coupla hours. Lol! (For those who didnt know, the link on the Tide Sports webpage to the story wasnt working early this morning, so all we saw was a picture of Sherman).

After reading the article in the morning paper, it appears that Sherman is letting it be known that he's interested and is reaching out to us....rather than the other way around. And that a lot different than what I'd feared had happened.

Some folks may really like this coach, I dunno. He may be ok, but the thing is...is Sherman that 'A-list' coach that Mal has promised he would seek out? I dont think he is. Mike Holmgren...maybe. But not Mike Sherman. :biggrin2:

Ok, anyway, I feel better about it now. The sky isnt falling (yet) after all.

:)

I believe he has a child (daughter) who is a HS junior this year.

Re: mike sherman????

He might not be a bad hire. Look at USC Pete Carroll (bad NFL coach) looking at the NC game for the 3rd year in a row. Nebraska Bill Callahan (bad NFL coach) now in the Big 12 title game and looking at a BCS bid. Stallings (bad NFL coach) average 10 wins a season. Seems to me that ex NFL coaches seem to do pretty good in college.

Who knows how a coach coming to BAMA would do. I would think that whoever it is, yes maybe Mike Sherman, would have to be more than X's and O's. They will have to have great Coordinators and skill position coaches in place and let them do their job. They have to be a good communicator and be able to talk to the Admin, the Alumni and supporters. They have to be good administrators and they need to be tough enough to do what's right no matter where the pressure is coming from. No matter where....They will have to be able to respond to the players of today and their families. They wil be dealing with players who want to be at BAMA for whatever reason. There will be a lot of expectations both internally and externally, this will be a tough job.
I fully expect MM to get this type of person, I think he has seen what can happen if he doesn't.
Let's give him and the new coach time to prove what they can do at BAMA and not live off of past performances.
We all have been in jobs that didn't work for some reason, we changed jobs and were successful at the next stop.
We need to be 100% behind whoever is hired...

Re: mike sherman????

Bayou thanks I feel a little better now. I though it might have leggs. He may want the job but Im not sure if we want him. I know yall know the target but respect that yall have to protect sources and stay tight lipped. Yall have been so quiet I think we will be ok. Its kinda like a sign when yall are quiet. ;)
