Miles pulled Benton's scholly offer to get Randle

I saw an article about Rueben Randle in a Louisiana paper on another board. In the article, it quoted Miles as saying that he had to make a decision on Benton last night, after Rueben Randle's father made statements about Randle not signing with LSU if Benton did. So, Miles pulled Benton's scholly last night to appease Randle's father. And the barners thought Chizik was really that good... I guess the barners can thank Les Miles for Benton.

Way to go Lester.

Not a good precedence to set. Can you imagine what Nick would have done if some kid or his dad told him he wouldn't sign if another player did?

What's funny to me is that the thought of Randle going to Nick Saban and Alabama scared him enough to make a move like that.

Well that comes as no surprise. I'm sure that he pulled Bell's and Sentimore's offers as well. Leslie is the Queen of Pulled Offers.

This whole situation doesn't sit well with me. On the one hand you've got a kid who's attempting to get a college scholarship based on his performance and achievement as an athlete. On the other hand you've got the father of another blue-chip recruit making comments to a reporter that essentially use his son as leverage to effectively limit the choices and affect the future of that kid. Now maybe RR and DB have been enemies since DB stole RR's lunch money in the 3rd grade and RR can't be bothered with playing with someone he doesn't like, but I still see this as messed up (ethically speaking). I know it happens all the time in a similiar fashion with the coaches saying "If you sign we won't take anymore commits at your position" but DB and RR both ALREADY had offers and the schollie was pulled immediately after the comments.

Maybe the NCAA should investigate RR's dad under the context of being a secret Auburn booster. The payment to deliver DB was made to Les Miles in the form of RR (joking of course).

it's certainly something that rival coaches can use to point out the recruiting practices of the corndogs....pretty unethical.

tickles me that every recruit we get out of louisiana, lsu claims they didn't want anyway. the case of sentimore is a classic example. didn't want him until they bombed on a couple of other d-linemen and then, after he decided to visit them, they were all love and dove on him. BUT HE STUCK WITH THE TIDE, so all of a sudden they didn't want him anymore! space cadets!

how ironic that bell's commitment put us on top. priceless! :BigA:

Just to play devils advocate a bit for Leslie. He was keeping from having a potential witch hunt meltdown in the Bayou and in some respects I can't blame him.

Randle's father made it clear that if Benton would have signed RR wasn't coming, meaning odds are he was headed to Tuscaloosa, potential catastrophic event number one for Les. Catastrophic event number two would have been honoring Benton's scholarship, losing Randle to Bama and then Benton not qualifying again which means he would end up with neither of them. They would have burnt him at the stake.

Remember Benton has been trying to qualify at LSU for two years now. He was in a tough position.

Frak! Just as reflected in his game-time management, Les miles is not good at making good decisions under pressure. This kind of switcheroo reputation will last awhile with recruits. Difference is that with Saban, he would have had a plan prior to all that drama. Miles just wings it.

The corndog spin is that Randle and Benton were such good friends that Randle's dad made that statement to actually HELP Benton. The way they are rationalizing it is that Randle is SO much better that Benton, that Randle did this FOR Benton so he wouldn't have to sit behind Randle. Randle mentioned after his PC that they were friends, but since they both wanted to be THE featured reciever, that it would be better if they were at different schools. It is truly a circus with this kid!

With that being true, I guess we never actually had a legitimate shot at him. Randle would have never been the featured reciever here either as long as Julio was still here. They are trashing Bell for being scared of competition, but it seems to me that Randle is even worse. I know this is always the ultimate "sour grapes retort" when a fan of team doesnt get someone they wanted, but we may have actually dodged a bullet with RR - seriously.

To add on to the devil's advocate train, we had what...11 open spots and just signed 27???? How does that work? I know there is attrition but 16 spots??? We all might be eating crow in a few weeks when we see how NS and company make this class fit.

If this is true, my big question is this: How can Les contact a player to tell him his scholarship is pulled if its during the dead period? If true, there may be more to answer for Lester and the tiggers.

Yes, I can see Saban now giving his dad that "what the heck is wrong with you" stare all the while turning and stretching his neck.

No class for the hat.

From all reports, it seems that DB and RR aren't friends (outside of RR). It's unfortunate that it had to play out like this, but RR is much more of a sure thing for these reasons. He is already qualified. If DB had qualified two years ago, or even last year, would this still be a problem? I don't know. Very odd situation honestly, especially considering that RR's family knew we had Benton for the last two years, and they tell us now that they won't come to LSU if Benton comes? I think something was in the works a couple of weeks ago with Benton's surprise visit to Auburn. I just wish this could have stayed quiet until after signing day. The precedent isn't good, but I am not sure what else LSU could do. RR and DB are both great receivers, but with Randle qualifying and DB still up in the air (people say he is finally qualified, but we have heard this for two years), it was ultimately a gamble that hopefully will pay off. Sucks because I have always been excited about Benton.

I agree that Randle was the better option. Amazing player with no grade concerns. However I do have to question a coach that allows a blue-chip recruit and his father basically tell a coach how to run his program. Nevertheless great class for you guys. Congrats.

BTW, I hope Benton doesn't qualify again. Don't want to see him in a AU uniform. But then again Dre would lock him down anyway. RTR.:BigA:

Honestly, the situation might have been resolved if RR's father didn't go on the radio yesterday. I really think something was in the works for a couple of weeks because of DB's Auburn visit two weekends ago. I really hope DB does well and makes it to the NFL, because from what I heard, he probably won't last that long in school.
