A player died on the field back in the early 70's. Don't remember who the player was, seems like he played for the Saints. Didn't Abner Haynes die during a game in the old AFC?

Abner is still with us. However, five decades ago, Detroit Lions wide receiver Chuck Hughes, 28, died of a heart attack when a blood clot dislodged after he was tackled.

My thoughts and prayers go out to this young man and his family. I am not a big NFL guy, but seeing how much Damar does in the community really got my attention.

Damar Hamlin’s uncle Dorrian Glenn said his nephew is “flipped over on his stomach” in the hospital to help with the blood on his lungs.
Doctors said that Hamlin is on his stomach to help take the pressure off the lungs, so they don’t have to work as hard, Glenn told CNN on Tuesday.
The next step is to get Hamlin, who is still sedated on a ventilator, to breathe on his own, he added.

Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin’s uncle Dorrian Glenn said his nephew is still sedated at UC Health after having to be resuscitated twice.
“His heart had went out so they had to resuscitate him twice. They resuscitated him on the field before they brought him to the hospital and then they resuscitated him a second time when they got him to the hospital,” he told CNN’s Adrienne Broaddus outside of the hospital.
Glenn thanked the medical staff, saying, “If not for them my nephew probably wouldn’t be here.

I’m just glad he’s still alive and able to fight and trying to get better and recover,” Glenn added.

“They sedated him just to give a better chance for him to just continue to heal better. We are just taking it day by day. It seems like he’s trending upwards in a positive way,” Glenn said asking people to continue to send prayers for Hamlin.

Glenn said that Hamlin did sustain some damage to his lungs and he’s on a ventilator to help with his breathing and to take some of the strain off of his lungs.

He's intubated. It's all wait and see. The best hope is he retains some function and is able to maintain a good quality of life. The worst case is he's already essentially brain dead.

A full recovery is a miracle at this point.
That
Source of Misinformation, (Twitter) quotes someone who has no knowledge, but supposedly has talked to Doctors who confirmed what you thought.
It's sad.

For once I have to give the NFL and broadcast some credit for a bit of foresight.

1) unlike the Joe Theissman leg snap, ESPN did not show me 17 different replays. They showed it once and after realizing his emergency, they never showed it again. Smart move.

2) the NFL DID postpone the game.

The narrative right now is that the NFL didn’t know what to do or had to be coerced into doing this and this was done by the players. But how about we wait and see if that’s really true. We have way too many instances of people thinking they know how other people should do their jobs. I run into this every day, and it’s all I can do at times to not just pop the person making the stupid comment.

Maybe the narrative is true. Let’s wait and find out before it becomes the canonical version that has to spend years being corrected.
Was it Theissman and not Tarkenton? My memory ain't what it used to be.

In 1971, the Lions were playing the Bears in Detroit. Chuck Hughes, 28, had gone in to replace an injured player. Several plays later, he collapsed. They rushed him to the hospital, where he died. The game continued as soon as they took him away.

I posted earlier in this thread a link to what happened. Most likely Chuck was dead when he hit the ground. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

And despite all this, I’m wonder how the NFL will handle this going forward. This guy on the clip made some very telling admissions about what happens to most players.

If, indeed, it were the shoulder pad, one has to wonder why it doesn't happen more frequently in boxing or MMA. Normally, it's a projectile, as baseball, hockey, lacrosse, etc...
This blood in the lungs, proned ventilator, plus having to restart his heart again at the hospital doesn't sound good...
