Ok, it's official...LCN doesn't like Eli. You've made your point. Also, way to pick on a man's appearance. Classy one there.

I could care less what other "in the business" think of him. He's the radio announcer for Bama football and I know tons of people that would LOVE to do what he does. He obviously is doing something right.
Amen he's made his point name callin is useless!:BigA: I vote Eli

Appearance or actions ? I've watched the man on at least a dozen occassions barrell his way to the front of the hot dog line at 1/2 time and just stand there stuffing WHOLE WEINERS in his mouth one after another . That's classy . Right ?:conf2:? We're all who and what we are and our actions speak louder than our words or appearance . Sorry for telling the truth .

So based on the fact that he is rushed at halftime since he has limited amount of time to eat you're basing your whole opinion on him? That's rather harsh if you asked me. The man's work is what most fans judge him by and since we don't have to watch him eat I'd say that most of us are okay with the way he does broadcast. I liked Paul Kennedy, but he left and was replaced by Forney who God love'em should have stayed retired, he constantly fubled through the broadcast to keep up on his second time around. I've enjoyed Eli and Snake and hope thye continue for awhile longer. I miss Jerry Duncan and I can not remember the other guy, but liked them both well, especially Jerry Duncan.

they ought to look into getting someone, say jay barker to do on the field reports. who would be a good fit to do that? no one will better jerry duncan but i bet they could come reasonably close. i can recall JD making remarks about eli's weight and you could tell by eli's tone that he didnt like it. i could tell that there was some animosity between eli and dunc and it wasnt just one game.

My thoughts, exactly...especially the part about Eli being rushed at halftime. As for Eli's eating habits in general, I can't say that I've seen him recently; however, a few years back, he had been on a diet and lost a lot of weight. I've seen him at numerous restaurants over the years...I think of one in particular in New Orleans...and I've never seen him scarfing down in a way that would embarrass himself or anyone else.

I grew up listening to Forney. Never cared for Paul Kennedy. Glad to have Eli--of course, I can't tell you the last time I listened to a game on the radio. I'm almost always there. The few that I have missed in the last 20 years or so have all been televised--usually on network television.

I like Eli because his voice is so recognizable and he is known for the other things--in addition to UA football.

Eli must be liked by many. I don't see Alabama trying to replace him with anyone else in the future. He has been doing Alabama football for a long time now. Why fix something that ain't broken? He's not any worse than some of these other pbp guys who act like they know it all when they don't.

No , go back a page or check the archives . My problems with EG are on & off air .

You're right about JF . Back when MsSt beat us in 1980 , he was particularly bad that day . He was "ending the game" when it was actually just the end of the 3rd qtr .

Do you mean like when the network tried to get him to quit by dumping him from basketball without telling him and letting him read about it in the paper ? BTW , the announcers are not hired or employed by the UofA .

well, and I've posted this before, he frustrates me as well at times with his BAMA broadcasts. However, he has some great anecdotes during his segment and many of them are BAMA related. He'll admit that he didn't know much about football in the South, and BAMA more specifically, when he took the gig in B'ham doing hockey games. Incidentally, many ut fans feel the same about John Ward's replacement, Bob Kesling. They are less than enamored with him. But, while I don't always care for his game-calling, I'll give him that he's pretty entertaining and has a lot of sports knowledge. He's also a pretty fair story-teller when you can keep him on track.

Point being, up here in the land of arnge, it's refreshing to listen to him every week because he will throw in some BAMA stuff, even when I don't call in.
BK - I remember him from his JP days . Was he there with Tim Brando or , was Brando with Tim Foley ? Both ? :conf3:

Land of arnge - Are you forced to listen to or , endure Bill King ?

Back in 2001 when Bama played in the NIT, I had the opportunity to talk with him at MSG and we took a picture together. He is very talented.

The first sentence of your first post on this thread made it abundantly clear that you don't like Eli. ("I'm 1,000,000% anti Eli") Fine - that one sentence was enough to let us know what you think.

You have a choice, which is to not listen to him. Personally, I like Eli, and I listen to him at every opportunity, whether it's football, NASCAR, or wherever. .

I'll listen to Bill during football season, and during recruiting on his Sirius show. Surprisingly, though he's a homer, he's been pretty gracious to me as a caller and has taken to heart that Middle TN is quickly becoming more than just vol-land.

As far as Kesling, I can't remember who he was with. He has been doing the Lady vol games for a long time, but I can't remember who he was paired with at JP.

If you have everl viewed the PPV - televised games, then you would appreciate the excellent job that Chris Stewart and Tyler Watts do.

IMO, they would make an excellent replacement for ELI & Ken.

I really don't like Stabler. he runs his mouth way too much to suit my tastes.

LCN, I'm not sure what stations you worked for or who these "insiders" you speak of are, but Eli is VERY well thought of inside the sports commentating world. Eli wouldn't be the Voice of NASCAR or handle many other duties if he were thought of as "poorly" inside the industry. Eli is NOT my first choice to handle Bama football any longer as it is my personal opinion that he is good, but not great any longer. I am a HUGE Chris Stewart fan and think he does a GREAT job of calling Bama Basketball and would love to see him handling football too. However, to make the statements you've made that are obviously untrue or directly tied to a particular entity or organization borders irresponsible. Eli gets calls ALL THE TIME (even to this day) asking him to handle pbp for many organizations. He does NFL football and I can tell you without question that NFL football teams can get almost anyone they want to call their games. Why would Eli get the call if he were such a joke?

Anyway, I'm not doubting that either you or people you have worked with don't like Eli, but to make such a broad statement that is more than obviously not true is just a joke to me and it comes off as sour grapes on your part.

Again, don't mistake my words to you as an endorsement of Eli. I'm tired of him calling Bama football too, but he is still a very good commentator and obviously a lot of "insiders" who hire him believe he is too.

I don't have a clue, nor would I care if I did, about "insiders" opinion regarding play by play for Alabama FB. I did not personally listen to John Forney (no reception) "in the day" but I love hearing his excitement on "This Is Alabama FB" CD. Again, I did not personally hear Jerry Duncan (out of state during his tenure), but reading about him, I'm positive I would have really enjoyed listening to him. If I ever again find an equal to Keith Jackson, I will listen to TV. Until then, I will continue to mute TV and listen to Eli and Stabler. Of course, they are not perfect...but Stabler's sense of humor and the excitement in his voice, which he cannot disguise, when Bama is 'on game' is infectious. And I can "hear" the strain in the voices when Bama is 'off game'. Since I also understand less about the specific play by play, in terms of FB terms, than most posters in this thread, any mistake would go unnoticed by me. And I care less about the 'specifics' than many of you on this forum, but I want a bias description of the game-bias in favor of my team! Just enough to reassure me you're really pulling for my team, too! If, like news broadcast, for example, a script could be followed, then we could grade them on being 'good readers', which would include pronounciation, correctness, etc. Chris Stewart is terrific-he has a 'free style' and a vocabulary that makes his play by play refreshing, entertaining, and engaging. Would he be same calling FB? Don't know, but I would expect so. I enjoy Eli and Snake. Maybe what the audience really needs is a keener pair of ears. Roll Tide!:BigA:

I used to know him and spent many years in the SR medium including some pbp and color . During those years , excluding my own opinion , I was able to hear and learn what other insiders think of him - not much . He's a joke and a rather bad one at that . Chris Stewart is twice the pbp man as EG .

Away from the mic , he's even worse . Wouldn't it be nice not to have some gigantic blimp wondering around the press-box stuffing whole weiners in his mouth - one after the other ? The man is an embarrassing SLOB !!!!! :p_evil:
Sir you are incorrect or telling a falsehood.

He is so bad that they hire him to do bowl games on westwood one radio network. He does hockey games on westwood one.
He does arena football for NBC.
>
Now with all your knowledge about the 'insiders', and since you must be able to access the pressbox. I find you texting untruths.
An opinion is fine- but to make up thinks that are untrue is beyond the pale.

I absolutely love listening to Eli and Snake on the radio. When I hear Eli's voice, weather it is for NASCAR, or whatever, i can just hear him during a great Bama moment. It was also a tradition growing up to listen to Eli every Saturday. I have also met him before and he couldn't have been any nicer. Chris Stewart, IMO, will get his chance one day but Eli is just as good, if better, than anyone around.

The first thing I want to know after a play on radio is the gain in relation to first downs, EG takes forever to give that info, sometimes he just don't and the rado listener is blind as the the flow of the game.

We could do better!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So, Eli stuffs himself with hotdogs? So do I. I could care less whether he consumes weiners, sauerkraut or hay at halftime.

I've learned long ago that in ego-infested occupations like acting or broadcasting, the name of the game is "cut the other guy down." If you whack him low enough it makes you look bigger (Ha!). I wouldn't swallow a broadcaster's private estimate of his colleagues for all the bananas in Guatemala.
