Morning Musings: Recruiting..A few quick notes about the camp this summer.

Over the past few weeks/months several people have commented on how well Coach Shula shut down the state borders with the recruiting followed by a general notion that the staff now needs to expand our borders and begin to recruit "high profile players" from out of state.

One example of our staff accomplishing this goal is the recruitment of Jimmy Barnes (6-5, 225, 5.0) of Los Alamitos, CA. Barnes, considered one of the top pro-style quarterbacks in California, is leaning to Alabama and his father commented the other day to expect an announcement in mid-July from Jimmy. Coach Radar was very high on his ability during the camp and it's an understatement to say "he was the talk of the camp."

The success we had in Feb. with players out of Georgia looks to be repeated with this next class. We had a lot of players out of the Atlanta area and many have Alabama very high on their list. This includes another QB, RB's, LB's, and some DLmen.

Once again, WR's coming out of Florida are being pursued heavily by our staff and you can expect Alabama to pluck a few blue chippers out of this hotbed for Div. 1 talent.

Based on the positions the coaches are looking at it's my best guess that we'll look at these positions.

QB- There is no doubt Barnes in the one we are after and the staff has every intention of signing him. Although, they are looking at a few other QB's this summer.

RB- If we can sign a top notch back I wouldn't be surprised if we only sign one. I also expect, based on the talent in state in the RB position that player will come from out of state, possibly Georgia.

WR- Signing 2 or 3 shouldn't surprise anyone. Unlike the RB position, there are several in state that should get a strong look along with those from the Sunshine state who are already expressing interest. One thing is for certain, if the incoming class shines, this position will attract a lot of attention next Feb.

TE- Again, the state is loaded with talent in the Tight End position. We've expressed interest in several and realistically could sign 2 for the 2005 class.

OL/DL- I expect these position to account for 10-12 spots in the 2005 class. We are recruiting several players on both sides of the ball who are considered to be top notch in their respective positions. We all know help is needed, and we are getting interest from some very talented high school lineman.

LB- This is a position it is hard to make a guess with. The general thought is at least 3 will be in the next class because depth is an issue here as well. The neat thing about this position is not knowing where the staff may be considering using some of the talent available. It's a choice, really. Early contributors or given some time to add some weight/muscle the potential to become good DE's for passing situations.

DB- No worries here with a good group showing interest in the Tide. The bright part about this group of backs is not only do they have a lot of athletic ability in coverage situations, but have excellent tackling skills as well.

Bottom line, as one of the participating coaches put it, "The camp was outstanding!" There were over 400 participants and Coach Shula spent his time where he shoul...both with the parents and with the high school coaches."

A few things that came to mind after "Submit."

Expect the commitments to start rolling in fairly soon.

One comment I found very interesting was the amount of talent/athletes on campus for this camp. It's been a while...

Anyone going to have the opportunity to watch the next Castille play...do so.

It's just my impressions (and it's shared by several) but the coaches seperated themselves during this camp. How? By the ones showing genuine interest in the kids at camp and the ones who didn't. This upcoming season will likely decide the fate for a few...although my opinion has been made up for some time now.

One more addition to Terry's comments is that the HS Coaches who come in and help with the camps have been made to feel like part of the staff. Unlike some coaches who have alienated these coaches, our Coach Shula is making these coaches an integral part of the system. Reports I have read say these HS coaches are impressed.

Let me expound on what Bayou mentions with a comparison.

Bryant, always credited his success with surrounding himself with good assistants. He never was shy or to egotistical to admit areas he needed help in nor was he afraid to ask for it. The same applies with Shula.

While there are detractors to the current staff, it has been made very clear that some of the coaches that are on the fans "hot seat" are directly responsible for Shula's development in his role as HC. While the jury is still out on how successful Shula will become, his track record is becoming pristine. That is exampled by the recruiting success we had in Feb., the reports from inside the program as to how smart Shula is becoming, the relationships being developed with the high schools, and the talent we see this staff interested in.

One more note, with all the criticism being leveled at the *'61 gang*, there are just as many ex-players from other years who don't like this or that. Much like Perkins, Shula moves ahead with little to no attention paid to the outside critics.

Where this program will be in 5 years isn't clear, but the road being built leads me to believe progress is being made. It is not only the fans who need a dose of patience, but some alumni as well...specifically A-Club members. Will that patience come to fruition? Your guess is as good as mine. Your optimism however, may be different.

Terry you maniac. . .you have me at your beck-and-call!!

Needless to say, very interesting and captivating comments from you. . .what puzzles me is the coaching staff "concerns". If I calculate correctly, I only have about 2 coaches that would fit my suspicions. . .I won't ask you to go into any more detail than you wish to go because I consider myself to be that optimist/realist fan and don't want to necessarily start some negative posting. I think that Shula was right for this year in the whole "what we need is stability" process and am guessing that he might not keep that same attitude next year. The wheels must be turning at full speed! Thanks for the info. . .now MY wheels are turning.

TerryP, I think you hit the nail square on the head. Patience and optimism are going to be the keys to success with this program. For those lacking optimism or confidence, there is absolutely no reason we cannot get back to the highest level, just as Oklahoma and Miami have done. I honestly don't believe that failure is an option for Coach Shula and his staff. If anybody realizes the opportunity here, it's Mike Shula.

Something I thought you guys would get a kick out of...from Rodney over on TI.

We had a player out of Ohio (Buckeye Country, to say the least) named Andrew Benchic. I got a kick out of this quote.

Benchic said, "I've always heard football was a religion here, and since I'm a God-fearing man, I wanted to see what Alabama was like."

Benchic didn't go home disappointed.
Considering the spiritual values Shula, Radar (this list goes on) profess, do you think he felt at home?

That's a good question Terry. I've also wondered how much CMS's spirituality plays in the recruiting process. If I'm a recruit or a parent of one I'd rather play for or have my son play for a person like that than a coach who is obviously far removed from spiritual matters. (cough cough... CPF...cough cough)

Times in the 40 were run indoors and since it's a slow track you can't really tell. On the other hand, Derius Heyward Bey, beat him by .07 seconds in the 40...but both under 5.

Coast to coast connection...love to see Barnes to Heyward-Bey.

Thanks for the great info.

However, I have to argue about the GA recruiting. I wouldn't exactly call our Georgia recruiting a success. At least not as seen last Feb. Our coaches spent a great deal of time in GA, and Washington, who promptly "disqualified" himself, was the only one signed from GA. And he was coached by former Tide player Mickey Conn, which surely had to be a factor. Plus the late interest from D. Walker and N. Brown can probably be attributed to their coach, who is former Bama player Dexter Wood. Nobody else visited from GA, to my recollection, and the others showing interest were probably using us to snag offers from the school the really wanted to attend (See Michael Brown).

However, I will add that most players are recruited prior to their senior year, for the most part, and you don't just lure in gobs of out of state studs with only 3 months recruiting time. Last fall's recruiting efforts will hopefully pay the most dividends in the '05 and '06 classes.

Thanks for the info.

The camps were a smashing success - and this despite the fact that the initial organizaton of them had some "bugs" - new guy organizing and all that. I've always felt that the only way out of the fix the NCAA put us in was to recruit our way out. However, one thing Bama fans aren't really noted for is patience...

My cousin is a QB out of Florida...won't be signing this recruiting season, but rather the next as the upcoming season will only be his Junior year in high school ball. He already holds several passing records in his school's division, and was also undefeated during the regular season last season, his first as a full-time starter, and led AHS into the playoffs. After the camp a couple weekends ago he was very high on Bama and Coach Shula.

Possibility for the 2006 Class:
Jared Hale - #7 - QB - Arnold High School, (Panama City, FL).
Vitals as of beginning of 2003 season: 5'11", 165 lbs. Nearly a year later, he's up to around 6'1" and 180 lbs. Give him two more years in the gym (he's a workout nut) and you've got the makings of an SEC QB.

2003 Regular Season Statistics:
CMP/ATT: 128/212
CMP PCT: 60.4%
YARDS: 2031
LONG: 79
TD: 24
INT: 8
QB RAT: 114
YPQ: 203

WINS:10
LOSSES: 0

Oh yeah, he's also the coach's son. My uncle played at Southern Miss (LB) some years ago. Football is in his blood.

As far as recruiting goes, it looks to be between Bama, Florida (although it would probably take SOS's return to get him to sign with UF), FSU, Auburn, and Southern Miss. I KNOW beyond all doubt that if Bama offers him a scholly, he'll sign that second. It's always been his dream to play at UA.

"You boys were eight and ten years old last time Alabama was on top. That was before any of you were paying much attention to it. What are you doing here? Tell me why you are here. If you are not here to win a national championship, you're in the wrong place. You boys are special. I don't want my players to be like other students. I want special people. You can learn a lot on the football field that isn't taught in the home, the church, or the classroom. There are going to be days when you think you've got no more to give and then you're going to give plenty more. You are going to have pride and class. You are going to be very special. You are going to win the national championship for Alabama." -- Coach Paul 'Bear' Bryant in his first meeting with his first team at Alabama, 1958.
