Will Gambling Return?

How will MS make up the shortfall of $250 million in revenue just during the 4th Quarter?
I've said it before--the economic impact of Katrina (and now, Rita) will make 9/11 look like a drop in the bucket.

CAC Executive Jimmy Porter should show some facts and figures to support his claim of hardship on citizens. I don't get that. Is he blasting the Indians on the outskirts of Noxapater too?
I think he's just p*ssed because the casinos will allow his congregation to fritter away the money he needs for the new racquetball court.

Some of the casinos have vowed not to return if they have to put those barges out there again. I can't say I blame them. Simply put, without this industry, the MS Coast will retun to its luster as an industrial backwater.
Yeah, that image of a casino barge several hundred yards inland has quite an impact.

I've never quite understood state govt. officials and their obsession with keeping casinos on barges and riverboats.

Missouri does the same thing, and a few years ago, a state legislator launched a huge probe into one casino owner that had built a casino on what amounted to a moat.........he was incensed that the casino was in violation of the law.

Agreed - It is almost laughable, pretending that these casinos fall into loopholes because they are "afloat". Either legalize it, or not...

The sad thing is casinos don't add any true value to the overall economy. They take money from people not good at math and create no tangible goods in return.

In Mississippi, it was a last-ditch attempt to help people who were languishing in poverty and unemployment.

Tunica, MS went from one of the poorest counties in the nation to one that had almost full employment.

Though I agree that gambling is like throwing good money into the wind.

I used to like to go to the horse track in B'ham, but (to me) it was more about the experience and tradition than just gambling. Plus, I never went to the track with more than $30-40 to bet.

Right. And to cause a DIFFERENT bunch of people to suffer poverty and unemployment...

I have one friend who goes to a casino now and then. He calls it "making donations to the reservation". At least he's realistic.

Smartest MS Governor in Ages...

I just wish he would take the mothballs out of his mouth when he speaks.

I'm tired of hearing about the "Missippi Caysht."
