Where the Elephants Roam
I know ,I know I shouldnt even listen to his show but I do because for some reason its like a car wreck, you dont wanna look but you just have to for some reason.
I remember 2 yrs ago when we hired Shula,Slimebaum and Vickers were like "Bama fans need to be patient because its tough situation for Mike to come into." You know what ? We have been being patient and I'm still in support of Shula, but now since we are showing patience and loyalty they are saying we are making excuses for Shula. They were the same ones that said we shouldnt get mad at Shula if he had a few subpar years to start.
Now Slimer and Prickers are saying we should stop making excuse and get rid of Mike. What a bunch of hipocrits !!! They are going against what they said two years ago all in the name of just stirring the pot.The whole thing may be funny to them, but one day they will feel what its like to be fired.
They are the ones that are making excuses to try and mask their hatred for Alabama. Stop making excuses Slimer and Prickers and be men and make a consistent stand on the issues. They change with the wind and ride the fence like cowards.

Welcome aboard.

Slimey is just stirring the pot. That's how he gets people to call in. If he thought like us intelligent people do, then nobody would ever call his show. Why do you think 99.9% of the people that call his show sound like they're from Podunk, AL? Just ignore him. That's what I do.

They have a radio show that relies on ratings to remain solvent. Stirring the pot has kept Slimebomb and the hyena in business and is seemingly a better audience draw than consistency and integrity.

Paul is out for Shula's head for some reason. Today he harked on how the honeymoon is over and prodation is no longer an excuse. I do not know why Paul and Vickers are so tough on Coach Shula, they started the day he was hired, by saying he was not a good public speaker. I love the finebaum show but I am tired of him harking on Shula, although there is some truth in some of what he is saying. Notice I said some.

Which side of the fence is Slimeball on today? One day Pat Dye was the greatest coach in Aubarn history. The next week he was 'coach choke.' One day Tater Tot was the best coach in Aubarn history. The next week he was a little dummy. The same goes for Bama coaches. He flip flops with the wind.

I hate to say it...but you're all wrong!

Finebaum is in the ratings business and he will do or say anything that will get a rise out of people to increase his ratings. I have had a few private meetings with Paul and he is much more forthcoming in those settings and is frankly not 100% sold on Shula, but isn't 100% sold on Tubby either. He does believe that Shula's future will be determined to a great extent by how this year goes. He even acknowledges that this was supposed to be the worst year from an NCAA standpoint, but also knows Bama fans. He is correct when he says that we won't stand for losing or mediocrity and the vocal majority will try to push Shula out if we have another sub standard year.

I personally believe that Mike should be given his full contract regardless of what happens this year. This will in all fairness be his first class of recruits that will be able to make an impact. Yes, we have had a few freshman make an impact, but Simeon, Tim and the receivers are only a few. Tim is really the only freshman who made an immediate impact in Shula's first year and Simeon and the receivers from his second, which means that Tim will be a junior this year and his recruiting class doesn't really count to me because Shula had no time and no relationships with the HS coaches. So Simeon's class should be able to make an impact on the team.

Also, while Paul did go to UT (he grew up in TN) he's not a big UT supporter and hates PHAT PHIL as much as anybody. He's not even welcomed there when he does go to cover a game. Most people need to lighten up and realize that Paul is just doing whatever he can to secure his future and he's winning because many of you get fired up over things he says, which is exactly what he wants. Therefore, you'll keep listening...as will I!

As has already been stated, stirring the pot is what's gotten him to where he is today. Actually, there's no doubt in my mind that Alabama's problems and instability (starting in 99 with Dubose's affair to the NCAA mess and the years of resulting fallout) is what's truly gotten him to where he is today. He's always thrived off controversy, but until Alabama was able to give him 5 years of material to feed off of his popularity really didn't blossom like it has. IMO, without the mess over the last 5 years, he's probably still only on in Birmingham and a few other north/central AL markets. I think Finebaum's worst nightmare is to have Alabama perform well this year (and silence a lot of the critics) and have Auburn go about 9-2/8-3 so that there's no controversy there to cover on that side either. Continuing instability at Alabama is his best hope for controvery and is in his best interest which is why he keeps trying to fan the flames. But it is not in our best interest (IMO) which is why I'm increasingly weary of his rhetoric and agenda.

I also think his old school outlook on Alabama fans being unrealistic and overly-demanding is increasingly out of touch and based on the vocal-minority/lunatic-fringe who call into talkshows and write hate letters based on his columns. There's a LOT of adult Alabama fans like myself who are in their 20s and 30s who at most got to see just brief glimpses of the Alabama teams of the 70s as very young children. We've learned to live in an era where Alabama and Auburn have been on relatively equal footing overall and when the landscape of college football has changed dramatically to the point where parity will never allow teams to dominate over long periods of time like Alabama once did. Heck, most of the older Alabama fans I know who were adults during the 60s and 70s are likewise increasingly realistic. The turmoil of the last decade has forced that upon a lot of people.

I still enjoy his show occasionally as he's able to get some big name guests and he's a great interviewer. But I do get tired off the nonstop swipes at Alabama's current situation (as though it honestly could somehow be much different given all that we've been through the last few years) and the rush to judgment against Shula. His show has never given him an ounce of leeway from day one because he wasn't THEIR first choice. I can't help but think if Croom had been chosen, these 'excuses' he knocks Alabama fans for using would still be considered legitimate 'reasons' as to why the program has struggled the last few years. Let's be honest. Neither of these guys were top-shelf candidates during any normal time, so it's extremely unrealistic IMO to assume one was somehow light years ahead of the other in terms or potential.

I'm a big college football fan, but I'm also a sports fan as a whole and I honestly get tired of the nonstop discussion of Auburn/Alabama and college football on his show. You hardly ever hear any other sports topic discussed on his show unless it's a MAJOR national event or someone happens to be hawking a book. And even then, the discussion only lasts until the next 'regular' caller chimes in with an Auburn/Alabama issue and it's back to business as usual. As a result, I've now defaulted to listening to WJOX during his timeslot, as they at least cover a MUCH wider range of sports topics (and I like the addition of Kelly Hunter.) I'll flip over to Finebaum when they're on commercial break to see if he's covering anything worthwhile, but usually it's the same callers saying the same things on the same topics everyday. I guess some people can't get enough of that. But for me it's grown quite stale.

I agree with everything you wrote Alanbama27. I love listening to Finebaum because his show is entertaining, regardless if he is critical of Alabama or not. He does consistently acknowledge the tradition of Alabama football. When the 'barn fans call in and make the typical accusations against Coach Bryant, Finebaum always challenges them on the proof of their false accusations.

He knows his formula works. Dont' take him so seriously. If you get riled up when he criticizes UA, you have fallen into his ploy.

Another reason I like listening to him is because he doesn't talk about NASCAR all the time.

I don't think ole slim does know that Bama is on the rise. People like him in the media don't keep up with Bama like the people on this web site do and don't really have any idea what is going on. But us real Bama fans know exactly where Bama is and just where Bama is going. If Brodie had not been hurt last season there is no telling how well Bama would have done. With 9 of 11 starters returning on a defense that ranked first in the nation for most of last season, Brodie and Darby coming back, and the depth we are starting to build at qb and rb, Bama is poised to have a very big season. Just take a look at how the rest of the West is down and you will see that Bama has a very real shot at playing in Atlanta at the end of the season. So my advise is to ignore slim, never listen to his show because it will only make you mad, and Roll Tide Roll.

If you just take his show for entertainment, I think it's pretty funny at times. I just don't take anything he says seriously. The thing he loves most is for people to get all worked up over what he says.
