Yeah, I have to agree. I think we should save that for the big rivals like Tennessee, Auburn, LSU, Florida etc. MTSU was out gunned but still put up a plucky fight and in the first half were equal with Bama on every stat. IMO, singing "we just beat the hell out of you," did their efforts an injustice, and was disrespectful to a valiant bunch of kids.

Nasty...?

I must respectfully disagree with the characterization of "nasty." Sure, there are plenty of people that consider the word "H***" to be a swear word regardless of the context in which it is used. Others recognize that it does depend on context. Some of those individuals believe that within the context of this cheer that it is a swear word and others do not. That having been said, I'll not debate whether it is or is not a swear word in the context of the cheer. However, I will debate the characterization of the cheer as "nasty." I believe that characterization is best applied to swear words representing bodily functions and sexual acts and any cheer which would include such words.

Now, as to whether it should have been sung/chanted last night or not, I choose not to get involved in that debate. Personally, I was not offended and did not think it inappropriate. It is a fan favorite and most of us have grown to expect it and it is absolutely, without a doubt the UA cheer that enjoys the highest participation percentage. I know that some are bothered by it in any context and I can respect that. I know that some consider it classless against any team. Others dislike it but don't mind it against our biggest rivals. In that case, I'd say those who think it to be situational certainly cannot claim to be "offended" by it. The only time I think it to be inappropriate is when we eke out a squeaker at the last minute against an outmanned, overmatched team that should have been put away in the first quarter. That's about as stupid as chanting "overrated" when you have just beaten a highly ranked team against whom you were decided underdogs.

I think Alabama fans are generally as respectful as you can hope for out of an SEC school except for rammer jammer. But in the grand scheme of things, a cheer with a slightly offense word - "hell" - used in a victory cheer is good for maybe middle-of-the-road on the SEC offensiveness scale. I don't have a problem with LSU (I honestly kinda like the environment), but I'd say their behavior is generally a lot worse than what our fans do including the cheer.

Also, I can see how one would want only to play rammer jammer after beating a top 25 team or rival, but I think the band doesn't want to get caught in judgement calls on who is worthy to play the cheer for...so they just appease the fans and do it after every victory. Heck, I know I enjoy playing it...even after beat MTSU just because it had been so long since I've done it!

First of all, if we saved Rammer Jammer for our "big rivals" we probably wouldn't have heard it in the past three years or so, now would we? And secondly, Bama did, quite literally, "beat the hell out of" MTSU in the second half. The most disrespectful thing I saw was all of the Bama "Fans" leaving with more than five minutes to go just so they can beat traffic. That not only disrespects the opponents, but the Tide as well. It is as if those fans are saying "Your efforts aren't good enough for me to stick around 'til the clock runs out." Everyone on this board is always so concerned about "supporting the team" but did anyone ever really stop to think what it would mean to the team if every time they played all of the Bama fans in attendance, whether the game is at home or not, were still there when time runs out.

Well, you'd be singing a different tune if MTSU wouldn't have beaten us.

Personally, I'd rather see us stop booing the opposing team when they come out before we stopped Rammer Jammer. Besides, RJ's not like it used to be. It can only happen during the last minute and can only be done twice -- thanks to the TN game a few years ago.

No one would ever do it if it wasn't for the band. It's all up to one guy in the whole stadium, and that's the little band director guy with his little whistle. It is pretty tacky, but I still insist on yeling it as loud as possisble when I get the chance.

Y'all were not listening close enought and making bad assumptions. If you had listened very close, the words have been change to "Give them HECK, Alabama".

Maybe one or two, said the "H" word. But there will be one bad apple in every group.

It makes our world better that we have become political correct. Lord knows we don't want to offend even one person... especially at a college football game.

I am so glad we have fans that have taken notice of this major PC infraction.

Disgraceful

I was completely embarassed when the MTSU team ran out on the field and the entire Bama crowd booed them. THEN, on top of that those 80,000 ignorant fans had the nerve to boo the delightful, gracious, loving, couragous Blue Raider fans, when it came their turn to participate in the Wave. Come on folks, we may wear different colors, but when it is the wave, aren't we all on the same team?!?!

Damn liberals. Why do we have to worry about pleasing the minorities. If they don't like it, go somewhere else!!! This is the reason this country has turned into what it is. Can't say "hell" in a song that we have sung for 40 years. Now we can't sing the song if the opposing team doesn't meet certain qualifications. I think a petition needs to be started to get rid of our elephant mascot. I'm sure someone is offended. And how about when the University cutting down all those trees on the QUAD! Let's go ahead and boycott the remaining home games for the University destroying our Earth. The liberal tree huggers in New College probably aren't happy about the trees! President Witt should have ask those 34 people in the college if it wsa ok.

Get some common sense people. It's a song. It's not like it's the F word. You all should be happy that we've finally won a game and been able to say it.

This should not turn into a politcal debate, but since you took it there, I must respond. Your argument seems to a bit warped. It's not "damn liberals" that oppose the word "hell." Most liberals don't freak out about "nasty" words such as that because common sense tells them that it's just a that...a WORD. It's the ultra conservatives that get all offended and start praying for forgiveness of everyone that just said the "H" word.

Furthermore, your "why do we have to worry about pleasing the minorities" is quite possibly the most ignorant thing I have ever read on this board. The scary part is, I'm sure that's how you feel outside the context of this Rammer Jammer debate as well. And that, my friend, is narrow-mindedness at its worst.

 these posts just kill me! they should of never taken rammer jammer away from us in the first place, and we should be able to sing it at the beginning too!!! it is a fun cheer!!! just a cheer, i don't think the opposing fans go away crying after we say it! it's a football game people, not tennis or golf. it is one of the things i look forward to the most at the games...i love rammer jammer!

and booing them when it gets around to them during the wave is fun too! just part of home field advantage, some people take things too seriously.

Thank you TideRising for that bit of truth and wisdom. Seems that some of you have your arses wound a little tight over a little word when there are much bigger issues in the world you should be focusing on.

Rammer Jammer is awesome, especially when Bama wins and the opposition has to endure it while leaving. I hope Bama can win all of their home games and give it to Rocky Top and Geaux Tigers.....

So the fans shouldn't do Rammer Jammer because opposing teams/fans might be offended? It's inappropriate to sing it when Bama beats teams like MTSU?

It offends me when other teams come into Bryant-Denny stadium and beats Bama. I'm sure it doesn't help our team's feelings either. Maybe we should just ban that. I hate Rocky Top too, maybe we can get the SEC to ban it in obKNOXiousVILLE. In fact, the color orange makes me feel ill, regardless of what shade.

If college football teams/fans get offended by Rammer Jammer I guess they need to step it up on the field. I've never heard Bama fans singing RJ after a loss. I hope to hear it 12 more times this season.
