National Outlook on Bama Basketball

Have caught a couple of days of Tim Brando's show in the morning and I have noticed he is very negative toward Alabama fans. He was commenting on the game last night and mentioned Mitchell's suspension and how it allowed other guys to step up. Anyway, every single time he mentions us he adds " If Bama fans even know they were playing" and things along those lines. It seems he always makes sure to throw in something saying we don't care about basketball.

Obviously we are a football school but I can't understand the negativity. Is it because we beat his Tiggers in the championship? Just wondering if anyone else has noticed this.

Vintage Brando. His hate for UA knows no bounds...

If you think Verne is bad, just wait till we get Tim as play by play on CBS. If Tim gets his way, that is what will happen. I am hoping that CBS might reach out to Brad Nessler to replace Verne when that day comes. With Brad's ties back to Atlanta area, I would hope he might be interested in the job. This league (and our fan base) does not need Tim Brando doing play by play on CBS.

Poor Tim -- The "Iron" Bowl......was unkind......

He's like an old lady who keeps putting on more lipstick, hoping someone notices that she's still relevant....

Brando has stated "Alabama Fans don't know a _ thing about Basketball and haven't for 20 years" on the Finebaum show before. I believe he really does have an issue with Alabama, and as mentioned, I hope he never gets the Verne seat.

Can you imagine Brando and Danielson together? :pDT_Armataz_01_27: :pDT_047: :pDT_kngt:

The problem isn't that Alabama is a football school. Alabama is a school about winners. Look at the amazing fan support our women's gymnastics squad gets during the same time period as basketball season. They play a title-caliber game and the locals and students support them.

The problem with men's basketball is that a winning brand of basketball in Coleman is as fleeting as a summer breeze. It's over almost as soon as you realize it's here. Grant is getting better fan support than the last few years of Gottfried. The next step is getting a consistent winner year to year then win some titles.

I believe the Ladies Softball team draws amazing crowds too. In reply to Brando they just switched to him up here in NW Ohio a few months back. I'm shocked as he certainly is pro SEC due to LSU and he is not pro Big 10 at all. Can't figure why a radio station in the heart of Big 10 country would want an SEC guy on. Still, I call about once a month and complain to the station that I will not listen to his opinions and when he comes on at 10 a.m. I faithfully change your station to country music until his show ends. Just like Shawshank Redemption, if I keep complaining long enough hopefully they'll see my point and we can listen to something, anything else!

We've had winners before and often, and the problem always crops up. I'm no fan of Brando, but he's been to Coleman. He knows the deal.

Agreed - and there are large segments of the UA student population who care nothing for basketball, not to mention the sidewalk alums who won't go to a game if tipoff is after 4:00 in the afternoon.

Apparently you do not know that Alabama is 2nd in all time wins and SEC titles only to Kentucky in the SEC. For you to agree with Brando is absurd. Most Bama fans who show up for the games know basketball and care about the team. It has been painful to watch at times this year I know, but as for me I'll stick with them win or lose.
BTW, How many fans does Brando's beloved LSU put in their arena? I'll wager half of what Alabama does on any given game. Brando is as biased a broadcaster as you will ever find. It is so disingenuous for him to say that as a member of the media he has no love of any school when a 1st grader can see him beam when talking about his home state Tigers. I honestly have no problem with a sportscaster saying they are a fan of a particular school. They are being much more honest than guys who say they have no allegiance. Just admit who and what you are and I'll have more respect for you.

Whenever BB comes up on their forums, and BB forums are almost nonexistent, the lack of attendance gets brought up...

I feel if Coach Grant can make a solid run or two in the tourney things will change. He's already showed he can bring in the talent, just need some consistency.

Just look at SEC next year, we should be number 2 only behind UK in terms of talent, (depending on draft I suppose).

Having our name on that Bracket regularly would earn a lot more recognition as a legitimate BBall program.

I do realize that Alabama has the second most wins and conference titles in the SEC. The problem has been the bad dry spells. Florida has grown their basketball fan base by consistently landing tourney teams, being legitimately in title discussions a few years, and winning the conference several times. They also got to the promise land twice. Florida didn't do it over night but it's a machine now. They are consistently a top conference team.

If Grant could just find a couple of shooters, our next step is around the corner.

RJ, you're missing my point. Alabama fans have never consistently supported basketball. It's why C.M. Newton left. Believe me, I was there the night he said enough, an Alabama team that had just beaten Top 5-ranked LSU and Kentucky back to back - on the road! -- coming home to a half-empty Coleman.

I don't care about LSU or Brarndo's motives. Facts are facts. I attended my first game in 1971, and all these years later, buying a basketball ticket is still not a natural move for most students or the thousands of alums that live within an easy drive of the campus. Some people don't like day games. Some people don't like driving at night. It's always something.

We do have some great basketball fans, and I'm guessing you're one of them. But support always runs hot and cold. That's because there are more of them than there are of us.

Side walk alums? That just baffles me...

Anyway, Bama is a football school like Kentucky, Carolina is basketball school. Let's make that clear. However we are in a bad spell right now. I think Grant is changing that. It is our culture though that we are football first and rightfully so, it drives the whole machine. I do wish we were in the days of Horry, Sprewell, Caffey and others. Maybe a lil bit of Hollywood Robinson even, but we have to win AND go dancing. It's gonna take time and we need CAG to stick around for that. National perception doesn't bother me much but Brando himself knows NOTHING about basketball. He just needs to stick to his two minute halftime show. Bama is gonna be ok though. Recruiting has gone well and basketball has great model to follow in its football program of how things are.

I beleive Bama basketball fans will support the team as long as they believe in the coach. I knew fans who has season tix that quit coming to games because they had lost confidence in Gottfried. Both Football and basketball can be successful if they are given the support. Florida is a good example of that. I think part of the problem is Mal and much of the athletic administration only care about football and that carries over to some fans perceptions.

No, I haven't...probably because I listen to Cowherd instead. :biggrin2:
