Having a large...

slice of Cherokee myself (great-grandparents born in Bear's Village, Cherokee Territory in the 1820s), I resent movies where Native Americans are portrayed as bloodthirsty savages (after they learned the art of scalping from the whites), since the whites were equal, or, in the end, greater, in their brutality. But sports teams, give me a break... I guess everybody needs his cause... It harks back to Al Capps' caricature of the protesting students of the late sixties and seventies - S.W.I.N.E. - Students Wildly Indignant (about) Nearly Everything...

...as i remember it from social studies, weren't the native americans that john smith met at jamestown opposed to major college football playoffs? isn't that part of the reason they didn't get along?...
... wasn't it the very first division between them?

thus, divison one became known as Division I?

... or am I getting it confused with the situation at Plymouth? seems like they had a similar spat - something about the native americans having a "fightin' pilgrims" logo on their helmet, and some dude named Myles Brand, or was it Miles Standish, objected :D

dave, as 5/8 Native American and 3/8 Irish I am not offended at Notre Dame or the Seminoles. There is one school in Oklahoma that does have an offensive name. I believe they are the Southwest Oklahoma Redsticks. If not that name it is something very close. I can understand that being banned.
While it may not affect football, it will affect teams playing in the NCAA tournament in basketball, softball, baseball, gymnastics etc. This is rediculous overall and I think the majority believe that it is also.

Correction:
I was wrong on the Southwest Oklahoma mascot. The team that I meant that is understandably offensive is the Southeastern Oklahoma Savages. I will go along with a ban on that name.
i think you missed my over-the-top sarcasm. i think the whole thing is stupid. although i agree about the "savages." i've seen that before and it strikes me as crossing the line. but the whole thing is totally absurd.

i mean, really. the argument that the ban doesn't affect d1a football because there is no tourney or title game is preposterous. who decided there would be no playoff or title game? the ncaa right? why then can't the ncaa apply the rule to d1a football? we're not talking about some kind of natural or federal law here.

the ncaa is saying that it can't institute the ban because it is foreclosed from doing so by a rule that the ncaa itself created. it's a total strawman argument that simply illustrates further that the ncaa is only concerned with this PC issue as long as it won't affect the ncaa's $$$ bottom line.

what a crock of dookie!

FSU is not the only big time program involved. The Fighting Illlini have been made a target of this as well. So the Nazis won't pursue this on NCAA football. Well, Illinois is a national basketball power who would be affected, and FSU is an annual high seed in baseball. Under the new rule they would either have to cover up all things Seminole or not be allowed to host any of the baseball tournament. They also get into the NCAA basketball tournament from time to time, and may well be successful enough in other sports for this to be an issue.

Someone earlier in this post commented that most of the schools using Indian type nicknames would not have the money to fight this, but obviously FSU (and Illinois) do. I hope that they pursue this as a first amendment issue.

how about the spartans? couldn't that be offensive to greeks? and the boilermakers could be deemed offensive to pipe fitters. if ole miss had to get rid of col. reb, what about getting rid of the name too. and what about the ragin' cajuns? couldn't the ok state cowboys be deemed offensive? isn't army the black knights? need we say anything more about the potential problems that could cause?

where will it all end?

I'm offended at all the people who take offense at nonsensical issues!

Why don't we all just change our mascots to something nonoffensive like fruits...of course, that would offend the fruitcakes who promote this idiotic out of control political correctness in sports.

It appears to be another form

of incrementalism to me. They are eliminating the smaller schools because they don't produce the aforementioned revenue. But, the big schools would be the only ones left and there are only a handful of those, and they can pick them off later. By then the PC movement would be more than even the Forida Seminole tribe could stand up to and they would have to withdraw trheir approval of FSU. As I grew and read and learned I had the impression that "brave" was an honor given to someone who had proven himself and was revered by his people. How is this derogatory or demeaning?

What's next? Why ridding all ncaa related games from keeping score, of course. Why keep score if it's the activity itself that matters. No one should be losers, why, they'd have their feelings hurt. Heaven forbid.

This is so rediculous that I cannot understand why all the major schools don't just pull out of the ncazzi thing to begin with and really make something out of the CFA that was begun a while back.

I sometimes husk corn and it offends me to be loosely lumped with the likes of Lawrence Phillips, Christian Peter and all those other Huskers who've committed despicable acts. Wonder if I could complain and maybe force NU to go back to being the Bugeaters?

The ncaa might as well bend over & spread 'em.......more law suits coming. Like someone else said, I can see the Fed getting in on this one. To say the ncaa takes themselves WAAAAY too seriously, is .......well absurdly understated.

btw bamanation. "Why don't we all just change our mascots to something nonoffensive like fruits...of course, that would offend the fruitcakes who promote this idiotic out of control political correctness in sports." Good 'un!

& oh yeah, the word "savages" doesn't necessarily relate to Indians.....we've got plenty of them in this state.......'cept we normally call 'em barners.

I saw a funny comment on TI earlier today. It said Alabama is an indian name, Tuscaloosa is an indian name. In fact I think Tuscaloosa means "We gonna kick your butt" in Choctaw. :D

I'm 3/8 Native Amercan from three different tribes. Not only does this (NA mascots and slogans) not offend me, I consider the mention of our roots to be an honor to our heritage.

What is going on here?

Ah, but you are looking at it logically. Naturally, the ncaa fails to use logic. No school is gonna call themselves something that is dishonorable or despicable. Anybody ever heard of a school calling themselves the "The Gestapo," "The Mafia," "The al-queda," The Nazi's"? Of course, they would all be good names for the ncaa.

By the way, isn't the ncaa based in INDIANapolis, INDIANa?

So in the same vein, I want to sue Notre Dame to change their name from the Fighting Irish as that name suggests a bunch of drunken Irishmen bar brawling. Very demeaning to the Irish people methinks!
