And speaking of Donna Shalala, I've been saying for the past 5 years that when it comes to athletics she is 100% clueless. In any event, here's her address to the UM community

THROUGH THE SMOKE

To the University Community:
Since its founding more than 85 years ago, the University of Miami has stood for excellence in higher education in every endeavor, every degree, and every student. Our more than 15,000 students, on three campuses in 11 schools and colleges, and over 150,000 alumni expect our core values to remain steadfast and true in times of extraordinary achievement as well as those rare times when those values are called into question.
As a member of the University family, I am upset, disheartened, and saddened by the recent allegations leveled against some current and past student-athletes and members of our Athletic Department. Make no mistake—I regard these allegations with the utmost of seriousness and understand the concern of so many of you. We will vigorously pursue the truth, wherever that path may lead, and I have insisted upon complete, honest, and transparent cooperation with the NCAA from our staff and students. Our counsel is working jointly with the NCAA Enforcement Division in a thorough and meticulous investigation, which will require our patience.
I am in daily communication with our Board of Trustees, Executive Committee, Director of Athletics, and counsel, and will continue to work closely with the leaders of our University.
To our students, parents, faculty, alumni, and supporters—I encourage you to have patience as the process progresses; to have confidence in knowing that we are doing everything possible to discover the truth; to have faith in the many outstanding student-athletes and coaches who represent the University; and to have pride in what our University has accomplished and aspires to be.

wow this is like a WMD on college football. it seems former coaches, players, AD's and compliance people are scattered all over the college landscape that were involved in this.

I agree with those who assert coaches Pannunzio and Stoutland must go. No problem if the exit is via a severance package... but they most go. Alabama cannot afford to be anywhere near the radioactive fallout from Miami. So is this unfair to the coaches, if in fact they're innocent or only guilty of minor violations? Perhaps. It doesn't matter. They will be a distraction for the duration of the Miami investigation. Their ability to recruit will be severely compromised. During televised games, the cameras will pan to these two coaches while the announcers babble about the Miami problems and leave audiences wondering if these coaches at Alabama could mean future NCAA problems for Bama.

Alabama doesn't have the luxury of waiting for the Miami investigation to run its course. Mal Moore must act quickly and decisively. As we know, the NCAA doesn't operate like a court of law. Hence Alabama cannot afford to get caught up in the "innocent until proven guilty" conundrum.

Make a quick decision and execute.
I will take a wait and see. I hope no decision is made just for the sake of image, or because a comment could be made during the season on where one of our assistant coaches came from.

Those guys work for us now and should behave accordingly.

I'll have three of what you're smoking. ;)
No joke! Has to be some good stuff!
Yall obviously need to brush up on your sarcasm identification. :conf3: Obviously Miami's in the deep end of the pool given the level of alleged coach involvement. I said as much, but still stand behind the premise that even huge extravagant infractions involving boosters don't rise to the level of middle of the road infractions committed by coaches. Obviously this burgeoning Miami case has huge extravagant infractions involving coaches... bad to the bone stuff!

This is BAD BAD BAD for Miami and college athletics, coaches were absolutely complicit in what took place there. When that happens teams deserve to be hammered... however even as 'horrifying' as some of what's alleged is if it had only been between a booster and players I would actually think less of it than otherwise since coaches are central to the allegations. Make sense? I think if we were discussing Albert Means and boosters paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to high school coaches with no knowledge by the university staff you'd get 'exactly' what I'm saying.

It's worth remembering that the NCAA alleged that Thirty Thousand Dollars changed hands over Means, not the $300K which the barners like to throw around. They also were never able to find that money trail...

Remember Sentreal Henderson? Outstanding HS lineman... 5-star etc. You'll recall he signed with Kiffin and USCw... but when the sanctions hit Southern Cal, he campaigned to be released from his commitment and his release was granted. He wanted a more stable program where NCAA issues won't be a concern. He chose Miami...

Hope he doesn't try to make a career picking stocks after his football days are over...

How in the world is this not a violation? (I guess the "I didn't know is alive and well..." (Pre-cursor to final Cam ruling when it comes out Cecil got paid??? Lightfoot Franklin are licking their lips, they have a precedent to cheat using Chett and boosters now...)

"Shapiro said he paid for lunch and hotel rooms for the brothers, their parents and spiritual adviser when they visited Miami in March 2008.

Kansas State issued a brief statement Wednesday night saying it had been in communication with the NCAA. "Regarding Arthur Brown and Bryce Brown, the NCAA staff has informed the institution that it has no concerns about their eligibility to compete at K-State," the university said, adding it would not comment further.

The Browns' spiritual adviser, Brian Butler, told The Wichita Eagle that he and the Browns didn't know Shapiro was a Miami booster. Instead, they thought Shapiro was just a fan who helped players from out of state.

"In our case, he did invite us to lunch and we did go to lunch, and he did reserve some rooms for us, for myself and Mr. Brown senior," Butler told the newspaper. "Those things, I can say that he did."

So, the U is indulging in all kinds of major recruiting and athlete payment for years and the college football world just happened to hear about it because of an upset booster that now feels he was used and then was shunned when he needed help from some of the guys he showered with gifts during their playing days. Long story short, the NCAA was handed all the juicy details on a silver platter. One has to ask, where would this investigation be without Shapiro releasing his story? If Shapiro was not mad as h... at U, we, nor the NCAA would have a clue. As bad as this looks for U, the NCAA has egg all over their face.

Out of curiosity I strolled over to a Miami forum to get their take on the recent events. Those people are nuts! Some nitwits are (among other things...) calling for contracts on the lives of people involved in exposing the dirt. Their beef isn't that the unallowable benefits occurred; but rather that they have been exposed. Their defense: "Everybody does it."

I don't know much about liability laws, but it seems to me the owners of the forum need to be careful about their board being used for such irresponsible posts.

Not a good time to be a Hurricane fan...

When Butch Davis supposedly cleaned up the Miami program, he was heralded for doing it the "right way" and was pretty much given a free pass as a clean coach. Looking back it appears everyone was decieved. Miami program never changed. With apologies to auburn, if ever a DP was deserved, this is it.

Earle isn't it interesting the NCAA is so concerned with finding the "bag man" and having him talk in this case? They just passed right over that part in the Means case.
