This in my opinion is far worse than celebrating after a touchdown. Players getting in other players face after every play to me is poor sportsmanship. and it lasts the whole game. Seems this gets worse every year. It takes a lot for a player to shrug it off when someone is constantly in your face. I say suit up and play ball and keep your mouth shut. It's ok to congratulate a teammate after a good play but not to knock a man down then stand over him so he can't get up as if you are daring him to get up.

Tebow- Cell phone gesture= NO CALL
Wilson- Cell phone gesture= 15 yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

We don't need another rule for the refs to have to "decide" on. They screw up enough already.

That doesn't work either. These kids are raised in a culture of trash talk and a penalty on a football field isn't going to deter it. I coach youth football. I've coached 7-8 yr olds, 9-10 yr olds and 11-12 yr olds. These kids show up running their mouth and it's because either their previous coach was a trash talker, their parents are trash talkers or their guardian is a trash talker.

I had a kid get his jock knocked up around his throat and his helmet knocked completely off in practice and the kid (after finally getting up) was talking trash to the kid that hit him. It's unbelievable. It's the adults fault and after hearing their entire life, getting them to stop at 18-22 years old is too late.

It's not about judgment calls for me. It's about having a penalty for an action that neither affects the game itself or threatens to physically harm a player. I just don't see hurting the rest of the team and its fans because of the stupid actions of one player that do not give him a competitive advantage or hurt another player.

The main thing I'm getting at is the excessive celebration penalty is not near as demeaning to a team as all the trash talk they hear all game long. I think there should be a review of all the penalties and the ones that do not influence the outcome of a game or physically harm a player should be thrown out because of the inconsistencies between different ref's, hence JPW's phone call in the LSU game. If they are going to have either of the penalties, I would rather see one on the trash talking than one on the excessive celebrating.

Do or have you ever played ball or sports of any kind? Its called competitive spirit. We even have cheerleaders doing it to an extent. Telling someone that you are gonna put it on him or saying who dat is part of the competitive spirit.

Now if it gets to the point of vulgarity and to threatening folks then yeah it should be flagged. But guess what....it's already on the books as a penalty. It's called unsportsman like conduct and is a 15 yard penalty.

Again its up to the official's interpretation. We don't need to confuse the subject any more than it already is don't you think?

I am all for competitive spirit, but some of the things I saw last season go way beyond what cheerleaders do. What bothers me is the taunting after a tackle, especially a hit on a receiver. You see it all the time, the safety or linebacker standing over the guy or getting in his grill. Sometimes the guy is shaken up and could possibly be hurt.

In my opinion, the obvious taunting adds an element of thuggery that football doesn't need. True, there is an unsportsmanlike penalty on the books, but sports often add points of emphasis when things get out of hand. Just watch the NBA this season and the traveling calls. It just takes a little effort to clean up the game.

It started with the NFL and the younger kids emulate what they see and the more they see it on TV the more join in. It is a societal thing that won't change any time soon.

Don't get me wrong. I can't stand the taunting, extra talk well after the pay is over. I see nothing wrong with a little (and I mean a little) competitive jawing on the field. I did it a bit when I was young and playing high school and college ball. But it was nothing to the degree that is being done now.

However, when these kids are seeing it and learning it from ages 8,9,10 & 11 years old and learning from ADULTS it is hard to stop it when they're 18-22 years old. Plus, as bad as the SEC officiating is when it comes to judgment calls I dang sure don't want to add another judgment call in there for them to screw up and screw us with.

To me all thee so called celebrating penalties and and all are basiclly bull.. I wish they would leave them alone and let them play ball as long as they do not make contact with each other it really shouldnt matter.. Honestly I like seeing the celebration's it makes for a good laugh at what some of the things people do.. I dont's see the whole team running on the field but heck if they want to do a dance let them as long as it don't last 5 minutes.. Thats just my opinion. Everybody likes different things I just hate to see how much power a ref has that can make the outcome of the game. Roll Tide Roll!!!!

I also agree with the posts that say judgment calls will not be enforced "fairly", or consistently. Anything judgment related is not going to enforced the same by every official. Pass interference is probably the biggest in this category.

Trash talking appears more prevalent now than it did, but it has always been there. There are more cameras and mics now. What's the harm? I talk trash when I play CHESS! You should hear me at a poker table.

This isn't Sunday school class. In fact, I've heard more trash talking during church league basketball and softball games than I ever did as a player.

Trash talking is just that. Talk. It hurts no one.

Larry Bird talked more trash than any NBA player of his era according to his teammates and opponents. He just wasn't miced.

I agree completely. When I played high school football I initiated many conversations with opposing players, none of which started with "How's your Mom?", not that Mom, and family ancestry weren't mentioned as the discussion progressed.
But it was honestly nothing personal at all and was forgotten as soon as the game was over by both parties, and yes, it was nothing more than competitive spirit.
I think we've tinkered enough with a game that really doesn't need any help.
I mean think about Marty Lyons in the Penn State goal line stand scenario.
Suppose the ref had flagged him and given Penn State an automatic first down and new set of downs because he overheard Marty say to the Penn State QB.."You better pass". Hey....in a way that's trash talk and certainly not a necessary statement. Think about it.

I believe the trash talking should be across the LOS before the ball is snapped, and not after the play is over with a player standing over another player that he's just knocked senseless. And a player that trys to call attention to himself after a TD or a big play, as if to say "look at me, look at me" is unsportsmanlike conduct. I gain respect for a player who just tosses the ball to the ref and goes back to the huddle or the sidelines. You know, like "I've been here before".

I played high school basketball before the 3 point play was in the game as the teams center. There was a lot of talk during the games and I did my share. I admit I got T'd up for a choice word or two of the four letter variety as well as throwing an elbow. Sometimes I got away with it sometimes not, but there is no way to keep all trash talk from happening. It would be a foul calling flag throwing contest not a basketball or football game.

We have enough penalties already on the books. Maybe they should enforce some things a little more but we don't need anymore stinking rules for the refs to foul up.
