-- and they are not necessarily where you might think, according to an extensive new study that aims to map the global Muslim population.

Nearly two out of three of the world's Muslims are in Asia, stretching from Turkey to Indonesia.

India, a majority-Hindu country, has more Muslims than any country except for Indonesia and Pakistan, and more than twice as many as Egypt.

China has more Muslims than Syria.

Germany has more Muslims than Lebanon.

And Russia has more Muslims than Jordan and Libya put together.
Nearly two out of three of the world's Muslims are in Asia, stretching from Turkey to Indonesia.

The Middle East and north Africa, which together are home to about one in five of the world's Muslims, trail a very distant second.

There are about 1.57 billion Muslims in the world, according to the report, "Mapping the Global Muslim Population," by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life. That represents about 23 percent of the total global population of 6.8 billion.

The figures in India surprise me. Which sort of explains why India and Pakistan don't get along.

"It's The Demography, Stupid."
("Stupid" was not directed toward you, Slab. You're quite clever.)
Western European countries have stopped growing and many are actually shrinking.
Muslim countries are still growing at pre-industrial rates.
Emigration to western countries is the pressure relief valve for exploding populations.
Unfortunately, many muslim immigrants, shall we say, bring "baggage." See Theo van Gogh's murder.
Eventually, there will be so many muslim immigrants in some countries that these countries will become Middle eastern in their culture and will be unrecognizable to their native inhabitants.

i forgot what the book was called but it might have been by jared diamond? anyway it basically said the next round of wars will be due to cultural shifts in countries due to immigration. For our own example- If texas becomes 80% spanish speaking with most residents forming a bond with mexico, you could very well expect a possible war to break out as they try to return texas to mexico. same thing with muslims in india, muslims in france etc etc

They'd better fight better than they did last time, or next time we'll take Sonoroa and Chihuahua (as if we'd want them).
On second thought, Baja California might be some prime real estate...

As has been pointed out the Muslim population will continue to grow. I would not be surprised to see some form of sharia law implemented in the United States in my lifetime, atleast in some areas where there is a high concentration of Muslims. For all I know maybe there is in a place like Dearborn, Michigan. It'll be interesting to see how such different cultures will mesh in our "melting pot." Especially among Democrats who want to be so "tolerant" but disavow any and all religion they don't agree with. If crosses, manger displays, and greetings of "Merry Christmas" are offensive what will be the result of the open display of the Muslim symbol of the crescent moon.

I posted a video several weeks ago that pretty much quotes you.

Here's the thread if anyone wants to watch it.

If immigration from muslim countries is not controlled (something this country, like most western countries has shown no stomach for doing), the west will become middle eastern in culture, with all the good and bad that entails.
If I could direct such things, I would permit no immigration from muslim majority countries over the next 50 years or so. Maybe by that time, most muslims will have calmed themselves and become rational by western standards.
The "all cultures are equally valuable" myth is especially dangerous in this day and time.

Their culture is poverty. Their religion is everything. When they get to western countries and are able to speak the language, they do well. Where they have created problems, they have not been forced to learn the language...

I am less concerned with "how well they do" (for themselves, presumably).
I am concerned with what muslim immigrants do to the culture that allows them to immigrate. Muslim youngsters in Copenhagen wear t-shrts that say in Danish "2025, then we take over." This does not imply a willingness to buy into the richness of Danish culture. It represents a refusal to do so. It represents, in fact, a hostile take-over. Why a society would be so suicidal to allow more muslim immigrants is beyond me. It's not like Denmark has some colonial legacy in muslim areas to atone for.
Dutch citizens of Dutch extraction are giving up on their own country and looking for someplace safe to emigrate to.
This is just a particularly dangerous time for interaction with islamic cultures.
In a few decades, maybe muslim cultures will have adopted western ideals (religious tolerance, for example, or western-style post-industrial birth rates) to the point that it will be safe for western countries to allow muslim immigration.
But not now.

Charles Martel is probably spinning in his grave.

Well, you should be because you are missing the whole point if you are not.

The only reason that Middle Eastern culture is so archaic is their poverty - it has nothing to do with their religion. Where they have immigrated and integrated, they are nothing like their ancestors. Where they have immigrated and been unable or unwilling to integrate, they live in the same poverty and maintain the same culture.

I will use France as an example. The French respected their difference and did not force the massive ranks of immigrating muslims to learn French. The problem - to work in a decent job in France, you have to be able to communicate effectively, in French. Because they can't, unemployment is over 40% for muslims in France. The result - they have set up areas within France that are almost exclusively muslim. The unemployment in these areas is near 70%, and the poverty is oppressive. The crime is so bad that the French police force the muslims to police themselves. The french now want to drive them all out.

In America, the muslim communities are well educated and the people are fully integrated. They are no risk to our society...

I disagree. I find many of them to be duplicitous. They speak of how peaceful they are, yet they refuse to hold accountable their radical religious lunatic fringe.

I can't speak for all of them, but I have met and worked with hundreds of Muslims and they are as American as you and I. After 9/11, no one has a greater reason to hate them than me, but I just don't see what you see.

That said, I respect your opinion. I felt much the same way for years after 9/11...
