I live in N. Alabama and currently work for a NASA contractor. While I enjoy this job something else has peeked my interest......Real Estate Appraisal and Home Inspection. I am in my early 30's and feel that if I am going to make the change I need to do so relatively soon.

Anyone out there a professional in either or both?
Thoughts on this?
I am seriously considering taking the necessary steps to make this happen but I just need a little positive or negative feedback.
Thanks ahead of time.

Always, always, always take advantage of opportunities to advance yourself. Early thirties? Heck you could change careers 3 or 4 more times. Jump out there now, try it, then you have two options.

Lot depends on whether you're a big bucks engineer or a lowly tech writer with the contractor. I'm sure appraisers make a good living in real estate, but they tell me the real money is in sales.
I am a "tweener". I actually am in Communications.

If it is something you are interested in , study the market. Here's a few questions to ask yourself:

1) Will you be working for someone or yourself?
2) If yourself, do you have the self-discipline to maintain a strong work ethic?
3) Do you understand the marketing dynamics enough to generate steady clients?
4) Do you realize that you will possibly be dealing with dogs, weird people, and so on?
5) Do you want to by me some beer?

There you have it... a handy dandy get started guide for the 30ish crowd. Note, question Number 5 is far and away the most important to your future success.

1.) Could be either. I would probably start in an apprentice type role (not in Trump fashion however)
2.) Always have....always will
3.) Of course or I would not be considering
4.) Is that not the daily course of life?
5.) Sure but you live in too far away. I will however drink one on your behalf shortly.

If that's "corporate communications" (code for PR and advertising) then you've got a leg up in the real estate field. If you are single, job-hopping is a cinch. I used to do it just for the fun. But if married (esp. w/kids), you have to be more deliberate, more attuned to the sure thing and the stability of the new firm.

One thing: speed and intensity of the work-world is much greater outside NASA and its contractors. I spent only two years in that spacey milieu. When I switched again to commercial life I really had to pick up the pace. It's a little like a football player transferring from Arkansas State to play for the Crimson Tide.

I am like Al Bundy. Married with Children so job hopping is getting tougher.
I know what you mean about the outside world. People just don't talk about getting things done....they actually EXPECT things to get done.
