New coach search...

From everything I have read, he has consistently missed coaching and has planned to return to coaching if he could find a situation that was right (read: not bottom-barrel NBA team with a GM above him and unrealistic expectations). The part that impresses me is that he contacted us without ever mentioning interest in college coaching, even though the more I think about what he's said he wanted, the better college coaching would suit his interests.

I did not know that he was the one that initiated contact and expressed interest in the job. That is good to hear. We need someone that is excited to be here and chomping at the bit to get started. At least on that count, I think we can say confidently that he is a better fit that GM would have ever been.

Found this pic. Here's what the hire looked like in New York City when it broke. Kind of cool

I could certainly see that running together and getting plenty of people confused:smile:

Avery Johnson Jr Clip. Perhaps a transfer. Size a disadvantage. But like his dad, works pretty diligently.

PTP-er!

Texas A&M might have a PR hit if they don't grant a coach's son a release. If he was a five-star All-American, maybe. I think he averaged 2 ppg or something this year. If I am Avery Johnson and Texas A&M doesn't grant him the release, I'm paying his way for a year then giving him a scholarship the next year.

Great point, he hasnt even signed yet. I need to chill, but it's hard.... Roll Tide!

I think it's not uncommon for a coach to have an agreement-in-principle and then not sign an actual contract for a few months while his agent is negotiating with the school. As I recall Mike Price had not signed his contract when we fired him which made the firing much easier. He had already been on the job for a few months and had gone through spring practice. I've heard of other cases where a new coach (or even existing coach) does not sign their contract for months after an agreement-in-principle.

I suspect we'll have an announcement tomorrow. The NCAA frowns on anything that might take away from the tournament finals. I'd be surprised if they don't do one tomorrow. He already has a meeting set with Dazon Ingram for Thursday. He hasn't even finalized his contract and he already working. This guy is going to be awesome.

This is going to be a fun ride. RTR

Finalizing contracts is for the lawyers. He will come in and sign when they tell him to! ;)

It's official: Avery Johnson is new Alabama basketball coach in 6-year deal

The deal is done. Officially.

Avery Johnson will be Alabama's next basketball coach and the details are now final, AL.com learned. The deal is for six years and close to $18 million.

"It's a wrap," Johnson told AL.com.

News of a verbal agreement leaked Sunday afternoon after Alabama athletics director Bill Battle traveled to Dallas to meet with Johnson on Saturday. The deal was finalized Monday evening.

"Coach Johnson has an impressive record from the professional ranks, as both a player and a head coach," Battle said. "His personal history is a testament to what character, enthusiasm, perseverance, talent and intelligence can do. He has shown fortitude and skill in every opportunity.

"I am confident that Avery will provide our student-athletes with the best qualities of leadership: commitment, hard work, enthusiasm, poise, confidence, and pride. I am very excited about having Avery join the Crimson Tide family. Not only do I believe that he will be an excellent head coach, but I am also convinced that he will be a tremendous example to our student-athletes in all areas on and off the court."

Alabama is expected to formally introduce Johnson, 50, in a Wednesday news conference. The news officially closes a coaching search that spanned 22 days after Anthony Grant was fired March 15.

The deal still requires approval from the UA Board of Trustees' compensation committee.

Johnson, 50, was making approximately $4 million a year when he was fired by the Nets in 2012. He's been out of coaching since then, working as an NBA analyst for ESPN.

In parts of seven seasons coaching professionals, Johnson compiled a 440-254 record with the Dallas Mavericks and New Jersey/Brooklyn Nets.

Well..That should make anyone worrying how he will translate & adjust to the college level, he's already recruiting, and to me recruiting is the most important aspect, other than coaching up his players, that is involved with being a HC on the NCAA level in any sport..I won't be surprised in the least bit if Coach Johnson doesn't land one or two quick big commitments, as he rides the excitement wave, that's surrounding him becoming our HC at Bama..I think Coach Johnson coming to Bama is the best hire we could've made..I hope he falls in love with Alabama & builds a great B'Ball Program & retires from Bama in about 15yrs or so..

Would love that happening! He's also a great person and will represent the University well.
