New coach search...

Quote from Shocker Net forum referred to earlier:

The offer from Bama is 4.2M for 6 years. Gregg has till Friday to decide. Word is Lynn and kids don't want to go. Gregg is looking at it as one more move before he retires, so it better be the right financial package. He doesn't want to coach forever. The cons for going to Bama are no real fan commitment to basketball; bad team next year; 2-3 year rebuilding plan; SEC is the SEC, cheating is almost an excepted practice...Bama fans probably alright with it if it yields results. WSU can probably get to 2.1 or 2.2M base, with incentives bringing it to 2.5+. The only reason he leaves is for the money. How much do you really need Gregg? Don't be a gun for hire. Be our coach where you are loved and respected. You have a great and predictable gig here. Don't screw up happy.

This guy seems like he has it all figured out, especially about Bama. We shall see.

I can't imagine CBB giving him the entire week for a decision.

First, there's plenty of fan commitment. That's a myth their fans and the national media want to believe.

Second, next year's team could be bad. Depends on if Gregg can keep players like Hale and Taylor to return.

Third, We won't be "alright" with cheating in basketball. The way the guy writes it, he indicates Gregg will have to do it to get players.

If Marshall refuses, he will likely end most of the attempts to woo him in the future unless it is a blue blood job. So this. like Saban last year, may be the last time he has any true leverage. Financially, I think he will hit a ceiling At Wichita State at somewhere around 2.5 to 2.75 million. They just don't have the cash to compete on that playing field. I have no problem with Marshall if he stays, he is making a decision that is best for his family. If we are giving him until Friday, we are making a mistake imho. We need to move on to Shaka or Avery before then. The available coaching pool is growing smaller each day.

SEC Network?
Better conference/Bigger stage?
Better athletes?

The salary information for both schools is probably about right but everything else is bogus.

Completely agree. There are a lot of reports (Seth Davis and others) that Texas and Shaka have not directly talked. I'm wondering if Shaka is waiting to see what Marshall decides.

I really hate that people reference lack of fan support but I can understand why they think that way. We have underperformed for a decade now and Coleman has not been "rocking" for a significant amount of time.

But! A hire like Marshall would send a jolt and fan support would reignite behind a productive team.

The only basketball incident I can remember was when xCMG was here and an assistant did some things that were against the rules. We dismissed the coach and reported what happened immediately to the NCAA. They patted us on the back for doing such a good job, then gave us a probationary period which wound up being a really big deal later down the line. I may be wrong on some of the details, but we have always run a clean basketball program, and no one here would accept anything less regardless of the record.

And I can't see us waiting until Friday to find something out, either. That would be highly unusual.

I thought this was hilarious. From a poster on their forum:

"Oh, and if he leaves us for Alabama? Bama? BAMA? Oh good grief, I'll be devastated. I certainly won't become a Bama fan, that's for sure. I don't like Alabama football any more than I would like Alabama basketball because they're always playing for a national championship. And really, just how much domination does one university need to have? They got Saban, be happy. Leave Marshall to us. We need him more than you do."

That was Tyrone Beaman during the Hobbs tenure. The NCAA cited it for the infractions imposed during Dubose years.

There is also poster who put a link to a story that was a year old about minor NCAA issues and said Saban was leaving within 2 years. We get Marshall or we don't, but we need to make a move soon. We can't wait around forever. Shaka ain't gonna wait until Friday. If Smart wants our job, we need to pit him against Marshall and see who blinks 1st.

Agree with everything but the better athletes. He now coaches in a part of the world where basketball is almost on par with football from grade schools on up.
