New coach search...

While your point may be well taken, your example isn't credible. The target all along was Saban - Sexton had contacted us and said he'd be available and would accept an offer. The issue was that we were going to have to wait until the end of the NFL season - a full month after most college coaching transactions take place. For a few weeks everyone was happy to wait... but then some of our people got cold feet (not Mal per se). Fearing we'd be where we are now after CGM, the decision was made (not unanimous) to pursue a more "sure bet" in CRR. CRR turning us down didn't change things at all - we were back trusting Sexton's word and waiting. Thus, Mal Moore didn't exactly "double down" and aim for a higher target after Rich Rod turned us down - using the rejection to say "we'll aim higher this next time".

They most certainly did. Though CNS was our first target, things changed aand we went forCRR. When he said no, things changed back. Suffice it to say, if he hadn't said no, CNS wouldn't be here.

Me's beginning to think if Prohm is the guy it'll be like when Tenn. got Derek Dooley. He was like #9 on their list but "he was the first guy they offered the job to." That only meant nobody else wanted it. I just can't think we're that unattractive as a job offer. I also dont see how 3 plus million can't get a dude and his ol' lady to leave Dayton.

Yeah, I get that feeling as well. However, I really like Prohm. We just don't know much about him because he coaches at a mid-major that doesn't have much shot at getting an at-large bid to the NCAAs. My only concern is that his recruiting classes seem to have progressively gotten worse each year. At one point, he was getting two and three star prospects, but this season and I'm pretty sure last season has well, he only has unstarred recruits.

I completely agree with the last part, though. Miller doesn't even make 7 figures. I'm sure Dayton is great, but for a few million dollars, I don't see why he couldn't learn to love Tuscaloosa.

I may turn out to be wrong, but I believe Prohm's stock has risen lately as Miller's has fallen...

Don't forget Gaspard with the ....... Never mind

ROFLOL!!!! You know I hate Gaspard as well so +1000 for you my friend.

Never wanted him here in the first place. Bobby Pierce was my favorite. But that's for a different time on a different board.

Once again Mike we are thinking the exact same. I wanted Tim Corbin 1st (I know I know, that is a huge pipe dream) but if the huge bucks didn't get him my guy was Bobby Pierce too. Once Gaspard is run off here soon hopefully if someone like Corbin doesn't want the job (why not try ya know?) then Pierce better get a nice offer. I truly think he is the real deal and could pump out some very good teams in Tuscaloosa. Another thing I like is he knows how to find local talent as well. I think that is what we need to get back to, a squad slam full of Bama kids that are playing for pride. Just think of some of the talent that come from Alabama (just a few I can think of):

Anfernee Greer (barn)
Daniel Robert (barn, was a barn legacy though)
Sam Gillikin (barn)
Cole Lipscomb (barn)
Justin Camp (barn)
Jake Vickerson (Miss State)
Kyle Wright (Vandy)
Grant Bennett (Troy)
Heath Quinn (Samford)
Richard Greene (Samford)
Chase Davis (UAB)
Adam Lau (UAB)
Ryan Ruggles (UAB)
Cole Billingsley (South Alabama)
Matt Bolger (South Alabama)
Ben Taylor (South Alabama)
Taylor Hawthorne (JSU)
Hayden White (JSU)
Joe McGuire (JSU)
Zachary Fowler (JSU)

That is JUST the SEC players and the big Bama schools. Doesn't JUCO players and the ones that went pro. We are loaded in state and we need a coach that can keep them here and make us the state school to go to as most seem to favor the barn now in baseball.

Ask for the basketball coaches my order:

1. Mike Anderson (we have to at least ask him)
2. Archie Miller (I'm sure he makes peanuts and no way Dayton can play with us money wise)
3. Steve Prohm

I just don't see why we risk playing with folks like Avery Johnson, etc. and of course this list doesn't involve any big big names other than Anderson unless we decide to still throw around 4 or 5 million on this deal. I know Miller signed an extension, but I doubt his buyout is high.

Tim Corbin would be my top choice as well! I just no back then it looked like Pierce was the favorite.

Basketball wise it's becoming very quiet. I think we might end up with someone that hasn't been named. I am beginning to wonder how TR Dunn would do.

At this point, I'm leaning to Prohm. He would be the antithesis to Grant in personality, he might keep some of the staff (help in recruiting), he has been successful, and he knows the culture.

I wonder if Easter weekend will dampen any news?

Cecil's column today is very informative.

CECIL HURT: Alabama still has options with coaching search

Without a doubt, University of Alabama basketball supporters, whether committed or casual, were disappointed Wednesday when the very obvious, very public pursuit of Gregg Marshall fell apart with a sudden thud. The collapse was quick and thorough, so much so it is hard to dismiss the idea all Marshall ever really wanted was a raise from Wichita State. So what are Bill Battle's alternatives?

First, let's assume the plan from the moment Anthony Grant was dismissed, and perhaps before, was to pursue Marshall. Perhaps he was on a short list of big-time candidates, some of whom were contacted, at least through intermediaries but replied with a gentle “thanks but no thanks.” That did happen in Alabama's case, just as it does to every school that ever conducts a coaching search. Marshall, or his agent, expressed interest. Should Battle have pursued it, even if it wasn't a 100 percent certainty, or even 50-50, or should he have backed away? Should he have talked himself out of trying?

Although Alabama never offered Marshall in excess of $4 million, as a Wichita paper reported, the UA offer was substantial and that money hasn't disappeared.

There were several people disappointed when Rich Rod bailed.....but that turned out to be a blessing......and to be honest, Marshall reminds me more of Rich Rod then he does CNS......

I think Miller.....would be the equivalent here.....perhaps there is hope.

CC, Cecil appears to throw a little water on that outcome.

The situation is not the same, in this instance Marshall is Saban and Rich Rod is Archie Miller/Prohm/Little Pitino/hurley

Heard a few minutes of ESPN radio, early in the morning. One of their "reporters" said that CSS supposedly said there were only 2 elite programs, in the country, that he would have taken the job at.

Let me say that again: only 2 elite programs that he would go to.

We now know Bevo Land is one. And guess what: we never were the other one.

And as for Bevo Land........I am surprised Rick Barnes lasted this long. I felt his tenure was done, around 3 years ago. He really was the BB equivalent of Coach February, aka Mack Brown. Except he wasn't one of the GOBs.

I'll open the over/under, for his days at UcheaT at 3 years.
