New Defensive Line Coach from Sooners

I've felt like DeBoer's past success indicated a guy who was smart about football and learned. I hope we see a further evolution this year.

By the aggressive staff and player moves he made this offseason, it makes me think he fully realized he got his butt handed to him the past two years in areas of the game that just don't allow it and still be successful.

Three things happen when you pass the ball. And two of them are bad.
But the players are so skilled in the passing game now that the 2 bad things just don’t happen much. Nevertheless, you need to be ABLE to run the ball and you MUST be able to stop it, since now there are more teams focusing on it than the recent past.

I absolutely marvel at the skill of today’s QBs and WRs. 7 on 7 and repetition has made today’s passing skill players much better than just 10 to 15 years ago.

No kidding! I just had to say that since we were talking about running the ball to win games, which I think is still true.

Watched a replay from the 1980s last month or so for a while. The difference in the passing game was just crazy. They threw 4 interceptions in the half I watched, all chuck up and pray type plays, missed easy throws over and over, and frankly, they didn't have any of the short stuff to the RBs and TEs we see now. Basically every throw was to a WR past the LOS.

Exactly. Don't see too many teams running the wishbone anymore. The passing game has evolved incredibly in the last 20 years or so and it has to be the dominant part of your offense to win. With that being said you have to be at least good at running the football.

In the modern game the run game is to make the passing game go. It stops the defense from being able to crash the pocket yes, but if you saw Indiana they were getting 4 and 5 yards or more on 1st down almost every time. Even when everyone including the dog knew the run was coming they couldn't stop it, we didn't, nobody did. So now they have every play in the playbook available to get the next 4 or 5 yards and 2 to 3 plays left to do it. The only way that offense doesn't score every time is if there is a significant negative play, a series of penalties, or a turnover. So essentially if they didn't mess up they were going to score 100% of their drives. You won't always see their level of perfection but getting closer to that model of run production is going to make you very good at scoring points.

As compared to us. We couldn't be sure of getting back to the LOS for the most part.

This tells me two things:

1. We just upgraded the coaching room for DL. I love Roach, but sometime I wonder what he is teaching in the film room and how he's applying to the practice field. I'm not saying he's a bad coach, he's just inconsistent and I think hiring Trent Simpson is really a good move. If anything, I think he's our next DL coach. I don't see Roach coming back after this season. I know I said I expected Roach to move on, but something happened and It didn't work out. I think Simpson helps Roach and Wommack out in many ways, and I think we'll see improved performance on DL this fall.

2. Roll Tide.

The rule changes have helped the passing game as much as anything else. Quarterbacks are protected more and wide receivers can go across the mid without fear on getting decapitated. George Allen had a stat on delivery sacks meaning hits after the ball was thrown. Remember some of the vicious corners and safeties. Desmond Howard could not catch a pass over the mid but was MVP in Super Bowl returning punts where he could see what was in front of him. The passing game is still most effective with used based on what the defense is giving you.

This has happened in some capacity in all the big three sports, and it has promoted a more offensive game in each one. With basketball, there's no more handchecking, no more "physical defense" allowed. In baseball, you can't throw up and in or even hardly inside on batters anymore without getting a warning, then an ejection. Ronnie Lott couldn't play in today's NFL.

It's true that changes to rules have enhanced the passing game. Also officials' interpretation of existing rules.

Still, to beat Top 10 teams (as opposed to score the occasional upset), you have to have at least a credible threat of the run.

IOW, you can't be one-dimensional. With the exception of QBs running and the 2023 SECCG, we've been one-dimensional since at least 2022. Maybe 2021.
