Don't even start with me about injuries...we just lost to a second rate team. I never thought I'd see the day when we can't beat Minnesota. I'm so tired of losing...

And I'm tired of complaining because we can't win a national title every year. If that were the case, we wouldn't even need to play the games.

Look, we aren't going to be 12-0 every season, why can't we get over it?

And Minnesota is NOT a bad team. They had a bad stretch during their season but took a team like Iowa down to the wire and proved to me they have an excellent backfield.

A team with out depth

and lost the entire back field to injuries. I agree we should get over it and look at it in perspective.

OMG Im gonna freaking throw my monitor out the window.

Get over it.

NCAA penalties, an odd number of injuries to the Offense. Playing a Big 10 team that has the FIRST EVER two 1000 yard rushers in the same backfield. Were they supposed to lay down and say "Oh its Bama we have no chance!"

Fans like you make me freaking sick, and sometimes embarassed to be a Bama fan. I hate losing but I also realize what the team has been through.

I have an idea, why dont we fire all the coaches and start over! :mad2:

your right TideFever...just venting. I was all set for a win...it just hurts that's all.
I understand. And I have to admit I've been in the same boat before, for some reason I feel somewhat level headed after this loss.

You know at some point we're not going to be able to use these excuses anymore. The further we get away from the sanctions, coaching changes etc. the less we're going to be able to come out yelling "But look what our program has been through!"

I'm not stupid enough to think that these above mentioned circumstances don't have a major impact on this team. But I think people are starting to play the "look what our program has been through" card for every single thing
and at some point that card is going to play out.

It is true that those NCAA and coaching excuses are getting worn thin........but of course you do have to look at the injuries.

The only real person left on offense that we could really depend on ended up getting injured before the game..........so then we had to play pretty much the entire game with a 2nd/3rd string offensive backfield.

Now, injuries cannot always be an excuse, but the extent that our team was hurt by injuries was definitely a big reason why we weren't in a BCS bowl this year.

No one questions the injuries or the lack of depth but other schools still find ways to win. All year longs since Brodie went down Shula has put us in 3rd and long and why. Because he is still coaching the pro mentallity when you incomplete a pass on first or you start out with a penatly the second down call is a run. And all that leads to is third and long. This does not work in college and Shula needs to learn this. For the rest of his coaching career he will have key injuries or depth issues at certain positions and needs to learn how to use what he has versus staying with his game calling style.

The only time we looked decent was when Spencer started to pass the ball versus us being vanilla.

Looking forward to 2005, RTR

Another new low.........

First back to back "non-winning" seasons since Whitworth era.

Lets face it, we ARE low right now. The NCAA saw to that by limiting our numbers, and dragging things out to scare some key recruits off. Plus 2 QB's signed by Fran and Price are not here now, and Fran signed only 4 OL's in 2 classes, Closner being the only one of those logging playing time. Matt Flynn, Deshaun Wynn, Chad Jackson, Jason Allen, Cadillac, Manson, Chester Adams......those are some players we might have had, if not for probation.

Not to throw salt in the wound, but in spite of the positive direction Shula has the program going, we most likely will be low again next year. We've got all the ingredients of a great football team next year, with the exceptions of experience on the offensive line, a proven kicker, a proven punter, and depth across the board on defense. But those are some MAJOR ingredients!

We'll stop using those excuses when they are no longer valid excuses. Until then, they're very real. And no matter how many times Finebaum trys to make people believe different, in his never-ending attempt to cause coaching contraversey, it cannot be over-looked.

People talk about most coaches getting 3 years to prove themselves. Well, Next season, Shula will have had only 2 spring camps, and only 2 recruiting classes of his own.

Good analysis, JD...

and, of those problem areas, the OL is the biggest concern. You would have thought that fRan, of all people, would be able to recruit OL. Of course, option-style run blocking doesn't predictably get you to the NFL.

Here is my take. Yes, we are low on numbers because of the sanctions. Yes, we have had more bad luck with injuries than any team I can recall. Yes, the players have been through so much adversity, especially the Seniors and I commend all of the players for choosing Bama and sticking it out through thick and thin. I think the fan base has been very good and patient through all of this as well.

In spite of all of those problems, we have been competitive, very competitive, but we have lost so many close games. That is my problem. At some point we should have beaten a team or two. This team and last years team has lost every close game we have been in. I see us playing for field position and trying not to lose instead of playing to win.

We make a great play, and then we see the penalty flag. Then defense can't make a crucial stop when we need it, or the offense can't make a first down when we need it.

I don't want to start using the sanctions and injuries as a crutch to justify not winning. I also don't want to ignore those facts when we are losing. If our coaches and players are as good as I think they are we should start seeing a lot of progress. I know our schedule gets tougher next year, but we played several ranked teams to the wire this year. I see no reason why we should not expect to beat at least one ranked team next year. Is this unrealistic, maybe, but I don't think so.

These are just my expectations. Do you think I am being unrealistic?

Me and Madamesnapper discussed this at dinner...

And what we concluded is that Fran did us NO favors at the QB position. MS loves how SP plays his heart out, but as she commented -- and this is a HUGE understatement -- "he has problems with his reads."

If Guillon had not transferred, we would have no one but Brodie and Spence on scholly this year. That really didn't help us.

Spencer Pennington is not a Division 1 caliber football player it's that simple. I don't have very high hopes for Aaron Johns but he's a freshmen although he can't get any tough yards cause he is the size of a fourth grader. The rest of our team except the terrible second string punter played well. It sucks to lose but I thought Shula and the rest of the players minus those 3 played fine.

Concerning this game, I really don't have a problem with it. The sanctions had the intended effect. If Curry is right, we started the season with 68 scholarship athletes instead of 85 like everyone else. Lose the injured, and we don't have much of a team remaining. When Minnesota was driving down the field, I thought, "Here we go again". After today, maybe those that think 2005 will bring the next NC will sit back down.
We didn't have much senior leadership because we didn't have many seniors, which in hindsight I think that was prime component that was missing. Despite the speculations, I think 2005 will be a little better, and 2006 will be better than that. But the Bama Nation will stand tall in 2007, I believe, if we can all just be patient, because of who we are recruiting right now. This years recruiting class, to me, is the most critical component to our rebuilding, and boy Shula and company are not disappointing. Take heart.
