New NCAA recruiting rule now in effect
Coming soon to a high school near you: someone other than Nick Saban.

The University of Alabama’s head football coach won’t be visiting high schools to evaluate recruits anytime soon because of a new NCAA rule that prohibits head coaches from making such on-site visits during the spring evaluation period. Southeastern Conference coaches voted in favor of the rule, which was passed at the NCAA’s convention in January.

Even more reason to hire assistant coaches that are great recruiters.

I think we should make CNS the highest paid assistant coach in the country.;)

Then he can visit and evaluate the recruits and also give ESPN something to talk about.

Coaches adjusting to change in prospect-evaluation rule
The NCAA recently passed SEC-proposed legislation that prohibits head coaches from making off-campus visits during the spring evaluation period from April 15 to May 31.

The majority of SEC coaches favored the rule change, which was made over concerns about "bumping" incidents - contact with recruits - when coaches are not allowed to speak to recruits while on spring evaluation visits. But there remains some grumbling as the rule, which applies only to head coaches, actually goes into effect.

New NCAA recruiting rule now in effect
Alabama's assistant coaches will do the legwork in checking out recruits this spring. They will report to Saban, who will make final decisions on which prep prospects will be offered scholarships from a recruiting command post set up at Saban's office in the Mal Moore Football Building.

'I have looked at every player that we've offered,' Saban said. 'I will continue to look at and evaluate players. I will communicate from here.'

Saban, by his own count, visited around 100 high schools last spring. A jaunt through Florida to evaluate recruits created a stir when The Miami Herald reported that Saban may have committed secondary NCAA violations by having more than brief, inadvertent contact with recruits. Alabama self-reported no violations in football for the spring evaluation period last year and was not penalized for any NCAA rules transgressions.

Saban rips recruiting rule
Conference officials proposed NCAA legislation last summer to cut out recruiting by head football coaches between April 15 and May 31, legislation that was adopted in January and seems to have most of the conference's coaches, including Saban, in an uproar.

"I think it's ridiculous that we're doing what we're doing," Saban said in a Thursday teleconference organized by the SEC office. "Basically, when you break it down, a head coach can go out in December, which is about two weeks if you're going to a bowl game. After all the dead periods in January, you get to go out for about two or three weeks and then it's signing day.

"When you're talking about developing relationships and knowing players and meeting guidance counselors and talking to principals and all those kind of things, I think we've put ourselves at a tremendous disadvantage in terms of evaluation."

Stupid stupid rules, served up by a few lazy HC's but affect a greater Active HC's.

Still shouldn't change much, the good recruiters will still vastly outwork the slack arses with the little time that will be had now.

Coach Saban is probably gonna be working the phones to high school coaches triple time in order to get in their good graces, even from afar. And his home visits will be top notch. He'll still keep his face out there for kids to clamor over and be active during camps.

But just have to rely on the assistants and hs coaches regarding character and
rely on the tapes, coaches, recruiting service regarding talent. He'll get it done

Phatso was already having trouble judging character under the OLD rules. Maybe another thing he's looking for is an excuse to recruit the thug/troublemakers to his team without having to accept blame for their actions..

Yeah, I can see him saying "Well his HS coach told me he was a saint. You know that stupid new rule doesn't let us see the guys ourselves" A few hours after his next guys are hauled off to jail for driving impaired of weed after fighting girls at a nightclub.

Re: New NCAA recruiting rule now in effect

this is so much garbage. the ncaa is slowly taking away the rights of a coach to judge talent. who else better to judge talent than "the head coach", "he alone," knows whats best for his team. why would these guys be so afraid of head coaches being active in recruiting? i have the answer.the answer is because CNS is highly hands on in bama's recruiting and they want to inhibiot bama's progression back to the top of college football ranks. look at the situation with R.Bush at USC. if it was bama, the death penalty would be handed down already. if i were i suing man i would sue for unequal practice, but maybe its the drunk talk in me. RTR!!! :BigA:

Saban opposes 'Saban rule'
By a two-thirds majority, the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision in January approved legislation proposed by the Southeastern Conference banning head coaches from making off-campus recruiting visits during the spring evaluation period.

That evaluation period started Tuesday and continues through May 31.

"I think it's ridiculous that we're doing what we're doing," Saban said last week.

You know there's something wrong with a rule when they have to make a new rule to keep you from acidentally breaking the rule, if you get my drift. Rules stink.

Re: New NCAA recruiting rule now in effect

I've debated in my mind how this is going to effect our recruiting, on the one hand I think our chances of getting a bust are higher, on the second hand it hurts Saban's ability to develope relationships with coaches and players, but when the player finally is allowed to meet Saban he may have this "I must met the pope" feeling and sign immediately.

All things being equal I still think the hardest working recruiters will come out on top, if the lazy coaches thought this was going to be their ticket they will be dissappointed.

NCAA rule works against coaches
And which league sponsored the legislation? The SEC, of course, where Saban and Urban Meyer were beating the recruiting brains out of some of the other coaches in the league because they were taking full advantage of the spring evaluation period.

I asked Saban point-blank earlier this week on an SEC conference call if the
legislation was aimed at him.

“I'd rather not answer that,” he said. “Everyone can make their own assumptions about that.”

I don't think its going to hurt us that badly. One of the main thing Saban looks at in coaches is their recruiting ability and I have more faith in our coaches than the others assistants. Im sure that when our assistant coaches make a visit there is a buzz aswell and considering the buzz still going around with Saban and the number 1 class and the expectations of Bama I think that if there's a recruit we want at a school we can atleast get him to accept a call from coach Saban. As for the evaluating, its not like the kids are having games now, they're having little spring practices now and then and I think that could be taped, right? Its done off of talking to coaches and film and I think we'll be fine in that regard. Its a little bit harder for the coach to not be there and interacting in person and while Im not sure how it works exactly, maybe watching some of the film with the coach in person. The info can still be relayed to him.

Illini's Zook can only watch as recruiting world changes
The other issue grows bigger every day and needs to be addressed soon.

Because operator/writers for Internet sites, such as Rivals.com and Scout.com, are the only ones who have unregulated access to recruits when coaches can't talk to them, it's an area that's ripe for corruption.

Some programs have secretly allied themselves with the Web sites that report on their school as another way to communicate with recruits.

In return, the Web sites get better information, more traffic and make more money.

Re: New NCAA recruiting rule now in effect

Here is a rather harsh article from Bobby Burton, Rivals.com Football Recruiting, Editor-in-Chief answering Coach Zook about his charges in regards to the new NCAA recruiting rule.

Burton: Coaches only have selves to blame
You're worried about football becoming like AAU basketball, about Rivals.com or similar Web sites becoming a "handler" for recruits or influencing them? Come on.

Is the media or an Internet site such as Rivals.com perfect? No, we're not. But our eight-year record of following rules and acting judiciously is far better than that of several NCAA member institutions and the NCAA coaching fraternity as a whole.

Here are some of the things we're worried about – and the things you should be worried about:
