Question
@gtgilbert : in looking at the Oline transfers, does it seem like the “more athletic type” player we have heard the past two years that CKD wants in his system? I’m not an expert by any means, but it doesn’t seem that way to me.
I’m starting to think (and I could be way off base) that after two years CKD might be modifying his approach somewhat given the physical nature of play at the LOS in this conference.
Thoughts?
Couple of thoughts:
when some folks said 'more athletic', they meant smaller and I think some of that was b/c of Brailsford being the idea of what CKD wanted. I actually don't think that was the case. at UW Brailsford was still the exception with rest of the OL being around or over 310. Also even when you look at the other transfers CKD brought in, almost all were 320+
I do think you are right in that CKD is learning that some of the blocking styles/scheme they've used in the past might not fly, both because of the physical nature of the SEC and also because there are lots of DL in the SEC who are both very physical, but also very quick/fast for their size. at UW, they could leave some back side gaps 'unblocked' or be able to reach and hold a block, but in the SEC if you don't block, or otherwise occupy with some type of fake, the backside DE or DT, many of them are fast enough to chase the play down.
Net, I don't see getting 'smaller' based on who has come in already, and who we have lined up. Also, all the TF's from last years recruiting class gained up in the 320 range.
that said, more 'athletic' with less bad weight and with better footwork would be a good target. I honestly don't understand what the coaches have been doing this year. I've said multiple time that IMHO, I think Roberts is the best IOL and it's not even close. Whatever the issues existed with the coaches I wish they could have worked out. On the rare times Roberts was in the game, he plowed guys out of the way, combo'ed with the initial player being handed off effectively and got into the second level. He's got good feet, great size and even though bigger, does not carry much bad/wasted weight at all. GVDM was next in line, then Sanders/Dewberry, and Brailsford at the back. When Formby slid inside he would have been ahead of sanders b/c Formby used his extra length pretty effectively. I'm sure Brailsford graded out very high b/c he didn't miss many blocks or assignments, but he also just did not move anyone out of the way, and often didn't have enough punch to get a combo handed off well before trying to get to the second level. Lot's of effort, just not a lot of moving guys. Dewberry was relatively effective 1on1 with a lot of knockdowns, but wasn't great at getting into the second level and often on combo's sometimes didn't full seal the guy or take the guy (that could be coaching and just needed to get way, way more reps at it though).
