New OL Coach - Who would You Hire???

I dont know individual names, but my criteria would be someone who has a very good to great reputation in the football circles for coaching OL. We cant miss on this hire and we cant afford not to make a change.
I don't have clue about "who's who" in OL coaching. The Missouri OL coach has been mentioned, but I don't even know his name.

I believe CKD is too smart not to make a change and it would seem he needs someone who has experience in developing run blockers into a passing system!

Young, hungry, technically sound guy who can get in their heads and push the necessary buttons to establish that dominating mentality needed to play offensive line in the SEC.
I like the sound of that. I'd like for our OL to develop a mean streak whose reputation went before them, striking a dread in the next opponent!!!

Don't know who it would be if he makes a change, but Grubb's background is o-line so he's foot print will be on this now, he couldn't last season, this is why Bama is going after these lineman that fit his system

I hope youre right. I think keeping the same OL coach would shorten CKD's leash and if it goes bad on the OL next year it could cost DeBoer his job and we'd be immediately in chaos only three years after Sabans retirement. We dont need that.

Whats different in the guys we're bringing in compared to last years guys? The guys we're bringing in are just as big as the guys we had last season. So whats the different?

I watched a little video of the new guys. I actually saw some of them getting to the second level! I didn't know rules allowed that!

coaching or capability is the question for both the old guys and what will happen with the new guys though right?

I wouldn't be shocked to see some of the transfer out guys do exceptionally well with new/better coaching.

Without better coaching at 'bama than we have seen in the last 2 years, I wouldn't be surprised at all to see guys that looked great elsewhere, suddenly look not as great.

Thats why I think a fresh start at OL coach is needed.

Question @gtgilbert : in looking at the Oline transfers, does it seem like the “more athletic type” player we have heard the past two years that CKD wants in his system? I’m not an expert by any means, but it doesn’t seem that way to me.
I’m starting to think (and I could be way off base) that after two years CKD might be modifying his approach somewhat given the physical nature of play at the LOS in this conference.
Thoughts?

There are some who think a change is coming and the time frame was "after the portal closed."

We'll have to wait and see, but if that's correct, we might here something sooner rather than later.

I’m thinking they see more lateral agility and getting to the next level with these guys.

I remember a run with Hill where the left guard was supposed to get next level and catch the linebacker flowing to the ball carrier (think left to right in front of you). Well, he just missed getting there, the linebacker gets to Hill and it’s only 2-3 yards. Replay shows every other piece of the puzzle was in place for Hill to get way more yardage if that guy had been blocked.

Offensive line is not the only problem, but if you can open holes, anyone can get good yardage.

What about some of the great OL that played here in the past?

Will Vlachos - (Current assistant OL coach at Miami); Barret Jones; Ryan Kelly (retired from NFL); Jonah Williams (active NFL but injured)

Probably won't happen as we need someone with a proven track record of success and development.

My wish list:

Sam Pittman (unemployed)

Jeff Stoutland (Eagles)

Jim Harding (Utah)

I read a few years back that true, good OLine coaches were hard to come by. Now this was speaking about the NFL level but the point was, every position on the field has guys that retire and move into coaching, helping to nurture the next generation and teach them. Oline was the exception. Oline guys don’t get into coaching much. As someone mentioned above, some of our older guys that went pro might be interesting to see what they could do as a coach. I know Vlachos and Jones were very cerebral players and very successful. Think about Jason Kelce as a coach, the things he could teach. Now with that said, prior playing experience doesn’t directly correlate to being a good coach. But the point is, the info being passed “generation to generation” may not be that high.

Couple of thoughts:

when some folks said 'more athletic', they meant smaller and I think some of that was b/c of Brailsford being the idea of what CKD wanted. I actually don't think that was the case. at UW Brailsford was still the exception with rest of the OL being around or over 310. Also even when you look at the other transfers CKD brought in, almost all were 320+

I do think you are right in that CKD is learning that some of the blocking styles/scheme they've used in the past might not fly, both because of the physical nature of the SEC and also because there are lots of DL in the SEC who are both very physical, but also very quick/fast for their size. at UW, they could leave some back side gaps 'unblocked' or be able to reach and hold a block, but in the SEC if you don't block, or otherwise occupy with some type of fake, the backside DE or DT, many of them are fast enough to chase the play down.

Net, I don't see getting 'smaller' based on who has come in already, and who we have lined up. Also, all the TF's from last years recruiting class gained up in the 320 range.

that said, more 'athletic' with less bad weight and with better footwork would be a good target. I honestly don't understand what the coaches have been doing this year. I've said multiple time that IMHO, I think Roberts is the best IOL and it's not even close. Whatever the issues existed with the coaches I wish they could have worked out. On the rare times Roberts was in the game, he plowed guys out of the way, combo'ed with the initial player being handed off effectively and got into the second level. He's got good feet, great size and even though bigger, does not carry much bad/wasted weight at all. GVDM was next in line, then Sanders/Dewberry, and Brailsford at the back. When Formby slid inside he would have been ahead of sanders b/c Formby used his extra length pretty effectively. I'm sure Brailsford graded out very high b/c he didn't miss many blocks or assignments, but he also just did not move anyone out of the way, and often didn't have enough punch to get a combo handed off well before trying to get to the second level. Lot's of effort, just not a lot of moving guys. Dewberry was relatively effective 1on1 with a lot of knockdowns, but wasn't great at getting into the second level and often on combo's sometimes didn't full seal the guy or take the guy (that could be coaching and just needed to get way, way more reps at it though).

This ****** me off when I hear people saying that we can't afford to not make a change at OL. This OL coaching change has been beat to death to the point that I'm sick of hearing about it.

Bottom line: There will be changes. There will be some changes on staff that some of you would not be happy with. We get it. We heard you guys. we've heard it over 1,000 time. We know changes are coming on staff. The coaching staff were not happy with OL production this year. You saw what they did with OL. Told everyone to kick rocks and brought in better players. They're fixing it on the player side. Now they're going to address the coaching part soon. BE PATIENT. Don't make a statement and then set yourself up for unrealistic expectations only to find out you were disappointed with their efforts replacing coaches on staff.

The new revised coaching staff will be focused on developing those players, and ability to recruit as well. Gotta have both.

My wish for the coaches: Just develop those guys. Just get them to play better. That's all I care about. That's it.

Here's a question for you: How many times Saban has made underwhelming hires and fan bases didn't like it.. and it turned out to work out well? Be prepared for that.
