New OL Coach - Who would You Hire???

Hopefully. In the past we've had some really, really big dudes who had lower body fat % and higher lean muscle mass (JC Latham, Neal, etc)
Man I hope so. The two big things i remember this past season (I can’t remember the specific games) was the big freshman tackle for UGA pulling and came around the corner like a freight train. The other was watching Indiana OL doing similar. Looked like a 300 lb sprinter..That is what I want to see..

This ****** me off when I hear people saying that we can't afford to not make a change at OL. This OL coaching change has been beat to death to the point that I'm sick of hearing about it.

Bottom line: There will be changes. There will be some changes on staff that some of you would not be happy with. We get it. We heard you guys. we've heard it over 1,000 time. We know changes are coming on staff. The coaching staff were not happy with OL production this year. You saw what they did with OL. Told everyone to kick rocks and brought in better players. They're fixing it on the player side. Now they're going to address the coaching part soon. BE PATIENT. Don't make a statement and then set yourself up for unrealistic expectations only to find out you were disappointed with their efforts replacing coaches on staff.

The new revised coaching staff will be focused on developing those players, and ability to recruit as well. Gotta have both.

My wish for the coaches: Just develop those guys. Just get them to play better. That's all I care about. That's it.

Here's a question for you: How many times Saban has made underwhelming hires and fan bases didn't like it.. and it turned out to work out well? Be prepared for that.
Well, the question was asked about who someone would like at OL coach so.........

Personally I'd just like to see someone instill a nasty attitude in these guys to the point they try to bury the team in front of them.

How many runs do you want called when the running attack is absolutely terrible? When the running game worked Grubb called plenty of running plays. The only problem was the only competition they could do that on was the out of conference weak teams.
I think that was kind of his point about it being more than just an appendage. We have to commit to having a good running game and it starts with the offensive line one way or the other.

A few members are adamant we should be focused somewhere *other* than the OL Coach. I don't agree with these folks, no matter how much I enjoy their input. Kap's pedigree is pretty good; for some reason he's not bringing home the bacon as our OL Coach.

I do agree with the majority on this thread who think the new OL Coach needs to help our players be more aggressive ... meaner ... have quicker feet ... and get through to the second level often. Who is this sorcerer? I do not know.

My personal choice if I could hire anyone, it would be Jeff Stoutland. He was at Alabama under Saban in 2011-12. To give you an idea of well respected the guy is, he was hired by Chip Kelly with the Eagles in 2013, was retained by Doug Pederson when he took over after 2015, then retained again when Pederson was fired and Nick Sirianni was hired. He has been with the Eagles for 13 years through three head coaching changes.
But this is a pipe dream. Jeff has it made in Philadelphia. He’s certainly not coming back to the college game at age 63.

Just my 2 cents, but this staff needs to figure out what they want from an offensive philosophy. What would I want? Someone who is a disciple of gap blocking schemes, and wants a mean, nasty, physical Oline who come off the ball aggressively. I just don’t see this staff adopting that philosophy.

Maybe a good plan B would just bring back Joe Pendry as a consultant to help pick the next Oline coach.

Interesting comments from former player Christian Miller (The Miller’s Edge) on X about the OL portal guys. Some on here just assume we’ve upgraded talent on the OL or fit scheme better. He’s not so sure and I put a lot stock in what he says. Check out his account. He knows what he’s talking about. We better get someone who can develop the guys we have.

Brooks, Carroll , Haywood , Delgatty or Strayhorn at Center. and Sanders , Poe , Waldrep or Fields?

Maybe move Carroll to left tackle , Haywood to right tackle, Brooks at left guard with his massive bulk, if he can move his feet. Delgatty has more playing experience , albeit at the FCS level, with Staryhorn having more size . All will be question marks, but right guard will be bigger question mark . My way too early guess is Poe or Sanders.

Sounds like he's anticipating more of the same.

Have to wait and see if we get a new OL coach.

That's typically how it's done, though. You don't just magically fix an offensive line through the portal. Last year's recruiting class was intended to be the foundation of the Oline for the future, and it appears we're doubling down on that by getting Haywood back in the mix, and also the Brooks kid who is also young with upside. If they develop the way they are supposed to, then the offensive line will definitely be better, in time. If all goes well, we should have a pretty solid offensive line by the end of the year. The same goes for quite a bit of our team, because we are going to be inserting a lot of youth. I'm skeptical that Kap was the problem, because the oline has been bad for years, even before Kap, ao I think clearing out what we had is a great start. Most of our best players this past season were DeBoer guys, so I think we need to trust a little that this staff knows what they're doing. The entire roster is about to be guys they handpicked and developed. so if that trend continues, then we're going to be just fine.

At least for me, the most troubling thing is Christian’s statements about these being “similar guys” to what we had, but possibly with more potential. Troubling primarily because the last two years most pointed to the underperformance of the Oline was not having the guys that “fit CKD’s scheme”.

We at least have a full Oline room with potential it seems now. But potential is nothing without action. Hopefully these guys are hungry and coachable.

Yeah, I don't see a reason to expect drastic improvement (and there needs to be drastic improvement, statistically speaking only South Carolina really had a worse performing offensive line in the SEC, despite Alabama having multiple NFL players on the line) unless coaching changes.

Welp, cant be worse than last year so works for me.

And if this cycle doesn’t pan out with players, it’ll be the coaches in the portal next year.

It is what it is.

Whats different in the guys we're bringing in compared to last years guys? The guys we're bringing in are just as big as the guys we had last season. So whats the different?
The hope is that they have much better feet. I don’t have the ability to evaluate that so I have no clue how the new guys compare in that critical skill. But just because they are the same size doesn’t mean there can’t be a big difference in the foot quickness. I’ve heard several people comment on the feet slowness of last year’s OL. I don’t know enough myself or who to trust to comment on that. I’ll just say that i would be surprised if Proctor or Brailsford or Carroll had slow feet.

None of this will matter unless the run game becomes more than just an appendage to the offense. Call Mike McDonald and ask him what he thinks will happen.
I assume you will be surprised to know that Grubb’s Seattle ran a tad more successfully than the current one: 4.2 ypc vs 4.1, but the attempts have gone up. IMO, though Geno Smith is better than many think, Sam Darnold at QB has been the biggest difference in their O.

Proctor got beat an awful lot for a LT who is supposedly highly rated.

I know we've got a few guys who are 350+, but he was 370-380 last year. There's just a big difference between a 370 and 320. Both are "huge" to most of us, but 320 is close to the NFL average.
