I've been lurking on this board for about three years. This is BY FAR the best Alabama Football message board. Let me start by saying a thing or two about my obsession with University of Alabama Football. I've been an Alabama Fan for thirty-three years now. I may be somewhat unique among fans in that I remember exactly where I was when I became an Alabama fan. I was four years old standing in the living room on a Fall day, probably playing some imaginary game, I don't remember exactly what I was doing...(that was a long time ago)....anyway, my older sister (13yrs.) came in from outside holding one of those triangle felt covered pennants on a dowel stick. The pennant was crimson with white "Alabama" on it. She came in and said "Yea Alabama". I asked her what the pennant was and why she liked Alabama, "Because we're #1" she said. I vaguely remember that we weren't number one at the time and wondered why anyone would root for a team that wasn't #1 (such are the thoughts of a four year old). Idolizing my oldest sibling however, I immediately hitched my wagon to Alabama and became a declared Alabama fan at that moment. That was in 1971 and in the thirty-three years since I've enjoyed the ups, suffered the downs, and developed a fierce passionate loyalty to Alabama Football.

I always defend Alabama in discussions and am keenly alert and forever on the lookout for things that could be potentially damaging to the mystique of the greatest tradition in college sports.

Here we go.......... Rammer Jammer is perfectly fine.
I have no problem with the word "hell" in the cheer.
But there absolutely should be some unspoken guidelines to govern when the cheer is turned loose.
For example:
The cheer should never be done against an out of confrence team ranked lower than us.(there is an exception clause for teams that bad mouth us in the media).

The cheer should be governed by a margin of victory trigger of at least 17 points.(I mean, come on, it just flat out sounds stupid to bellow out "we just beat the hell outta you" when we just eeked out a close win).

Of course the cheer should be used against D-1A opponents only.
(exception clause when neccessary).

But friends, please, there is no exception clause for the last and most important guideline:
Under no circumstances do you ever.....I mean you Never! Ever!! say the cheer BEFORE a game. (If this has to be explained to you, then quite frankly, You're an idiot). But I will explain anyway. Turning loose Rammer Jammer BEFORE a game is inviting embarrasment of disastrous proportions (Hello.....earth to dingbats.......WHAT IF WE LOSE THE GAME!!) You'll make the whole Bama Nation look stupid!

Turning loose the cheer after every win cheapens the cheer.
Don't cheapen the traditon of the cheer!!
If you follow the guidelines, You'll still get to turn loose the cheer, and it will be administered under the proper circumstances. This allows the cheer to be kept and preserves the integrity and the tradition of the cheer.

Hey, if these guidelines are followed, NO ONE will complain about Rammer Jammer. Personally, I like the cheer............(see GUIDELINES).

Excellent post, and great points.

Another thing to keep in mind is when other schools accuse us of living in the past, quietly point out that there are now 52 bowl appearances, still the most, and the tradition is moving along quite nicely. Surely they will get the point, but then again, if it were that simple, then they would be rented to some huge Matrix like computer as spare bio-batteries.

Welcome aboard, Mal!!!

Seriously, you're saying by playing the cheer before the game "we're inviting embarrassment." So? IT'S A CHEER. LET IT GO.

I say we have the same policy for the rammer jammer cheer we have for sex...early and often.

the cheer is fun, last time I checked the concept of being a fan and playing football is so we have fun right? i could have missed the boat though.

Why did it officially get dropped before the game? Remember when we beat UT 34-14 and sang it about 5 times when it was only Bama people left in Neyland....Classic.

Welcome aboard. Some folks might take a little time adjusting to you since you know the difference between "lose" and "loose".

I assume you're eternally grateful for your sister's wisdom.

Eh eh!!! :D

Welcome "Brilliance". I wouldn't worry about what some of the posters say here.

I pay attention to the better posters and ignore the lower echelon... especially those that have syntactical or orthographic issues such as(but not limited to) that which TommyMac stated.

Welcome to the board! I see you have some cajones to mention the Rammer Jammer debate in your first post. You make excellent points, but really, too many rules (read "guidelines") spoil the fun. You made my head hurt with all that. I say just scream your guts out and let those prone to being offended sort it out for themselves.

Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer, give 'em hell Alabama!!!!!!!!!!

I'll let my post speak for itself.
I'll just say one more thing about Rammer Jammer.
I would like to remind certain posters that I've never advocated getting rid of Rammer Jammer. Again, personally,I like the cheer.....when it's done at the right times.
I know the kids (and some adults) like the cheer, and believe it or not, so do I.
I don't really care whose offended by the cheer. I assure you I'm not one of those hyper-sensitive politically correct people.

I get the impression that SOME posters are refering to Christians when they say "hyper-sensitive" or "politically correct".
In my experience, it's not Christians who are "Hyper-sensitive" and they're certainly not politically correct -no- that distinction goes to, quite frankly, liberal democrat politicians and the people who support them ( just check the laws passed by democrats over the last 40 years to verify this).

No friends, don't become offended by this post.

Rammer Jammer restraint has nothing to do with someone being offended, and everything to do with making us look stupid when it's done too often, or at the wrong times.
