You beat me to it.

To be honest, I am indifferent to instant replay. The only bad thing about is that the SEC won't feel the need to get new refs. Some people think that instant replay will fix everything. Ha...dream on.

Take the same refs we've had plus not being able to review bad calls, which is where the biggest problem is (penalties). Things won't be too much better.

I guess it's a start...

This will go through over Phatimus' fat dead body. With a replay, the most egregious bad calls in favor of Tutorsee will be reversed. This will put the Viles at a distinct disadvantage. It'll be harder for the officials to favor them in their calls, particularly at those times when Phil is getting his butt kicked and really needs help from this zebra buddies. Remember how the officials frog-marched the Viles down the field to score a TD against the Barn at the start of the second half of their first game? That could never have happened if there was a replay.

and in the Big 10 coaches had no power to ask for challenges....they were performed by a "technical advisor" which is probably a member of the officiating crew like the guy that operates the clock

SEC football coaches favor immediate adoption of instant replay.

Eleven of the league's coaches heard from commissioner Mike Slive on Tuesday at the American Football Coaches Association annual convention.

"I think it is fair to say that the coaches were very enthusiastic about the idea," Slive told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Other conferences, including the ACC, have discussed replay. The Big Ten used limited replays this season.

"What it does is address a situation where there seems to be an obvious mistake," Georgia coach Mark Richt told the paper. "Everybody wants to get those kind of calls right. You don't want a game decided on what is clearly a blown call."

SEC athletic directors will consider in March whether to adopt a replay system.

Among the issues to be settled according to the paper are the cost of cameras and crews for non-televised games and who will be able to call for replays.

Could be great,
could be just another way for the refs to use power.

Would the ref calling a UF player for throwing the second punch, when he clearly saw the utk player throw the first punch, be reviewable?
What about the no call on pass int. in the Bama/LSU game, could we get a review on that?
See, it all depends on what can be questioned and reviewed.

I think it will be a good thing. You have to remember though, a lot of things are not reviewable. It's not going to cure everything but I think it will provide improvement.

since most penalties are judgement calls they are not reviewable....things that are reviewable are those where the rules specifically state what is and is not cause for a particular call

fumbles, possession on passes, was the QB's arm moving forward, was the ball spotted in the correct place, did the ball break the plane of the goal line are all reviewable

roughing the passer/kicker, late hits (including the Tenn./Fla. ruling), facemasking, holding, pass interference are not reviewable

so those of you that want this because you say Alabama gets the short end of the deal when it comes to penalties and such will be sadly disappointed when it doesn't work like you hope

First off, I think that this is a good thing for the SEC. It will fix certain bad calls that may or may not decide games.

However, some of the worst calls of the year won't be reviewable. In the Music City Bowl, I doubt that either one of the calls against us would have been reversed. While the Minnesota player clearly fumbled, the NFL instant replay does not allow you to challenge when the ruling on the field is that the player was down (But they do allow you to challenge when it's ruled a fumble. I've never understood that, and hopefully the SEC rules will be different.). Also, Prothro's fumble would not have been reversed because it was extremely close, and there was no replay that clearly showed he was down. In order for them to reverse calls, there has to be clear evidence.

As mentioned, it wouldn't have helped in our game against LSU or in the Tennesee/Florida game. The only game that I can think of off the top of my head where this would have really helped Bama is the 1983 Penn State game. But, it is a start, and hopefully, it will fix the situation when there is a blown call.

Instant replay only means one thing: A LONGER GAME.

Which is good news if you are CBS and can take a TV Timeout everytime one of these replays comes up. I hope the SEC looks into limiting TV Timeouts to every other change of possession, timeouts and instant replay.

Not that much longer...

The average time per review in the Big 10 was 2 minutes.

Small price to pay when you have a call that clearly effects the outcome of a game.

Case-in-point: MCB Minn. clearly fumbles...scores next play...They would have needed only to look at the jumbotron to overturn that one.
