Gotta love a guy that writes like this:

“I like the Southeastern Conference. The SEC is so much of what football is about, the rest of the country should request permission to play the game.” Paul Daugherty, The Cincinnati Enquirer.

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/columnist/daugherty/2008-09-30-college-versus-pro_N.htm

It’s a pretty good article and will be well received everywhere except maybe places like Green Bay and Philly.

Wow. Nice artcle. I feel the same way. NFL football is too packaged, too boring, too stuffy.

Both sports are all about the ca$h. Both sports are filled with athletes who think waaay too much of themselves. Both sports have horrible programs to go along with their storied programs.

I grew up in the South and didn't watch my first non-playoff NFL game until I was 21 years old. I have lived in the Northeast for more than 20 years now, where NFL football is every bit the "religion" that college football is in the SEC.

I still prefer college football, but not by much. Both sports are great - if you have a great team to support. As a NY Giants fan, I have the best of both worlds, and this season (both teams undefeated, both back on the rise) couldn't be going any better...

I agree with a good bit of what you've said. Except for the Super Bowl, it's really hard to beat the NFL playoffs.

If you have a dog in the hunt, the NFL can be really good. Even then, good luck seeing that team on Sundays if you don't live in that team's market. Unless you want to shell out $280 for the Sunday Ticket.

The article is definitely right about one thing; it's hard to match the passion and intensity of college football.

Think about this - The NY Giants are going to play in their new stadium next season. I have a friend that has had 4 season tickets in his family for more than 30 years. The tickets are $80 each, per game. His total cost for the tickets to the 10 games this season (2 pre-season games) was $3,200. That was manageable.

Next season, those same tickets will be $600 each. That would cost him $24,000 next season. He might consider that, but it doesn't end there - not even close. You see, the Giants are also requiring that he buy PSLs (personal seat licenses). Their cost - $20,000 EACH!!! :eek2:

That means, if he wants those same seats next season, he will have to pay $104,000!!! :eek2::eek2: That is an increase of over $100,000 from one year to the next. He had to give up seats that have been in his family for over 30 years.

The NY Giants will no longer have regular guys in the stands, and that is just plain wrong...:mad2::mad2:

If there was an NFL game in my front yard, I wouldn't go outside. For $3200 I could buy another pretty nice 1969 Mustang fastback to tinker with. $104K is just downright greedy. They must be trying to get into the black with the new stadium before building a new one. For $104K ,I could build a HUGE shop with a lift or two, a mig AND tig welder, plasma cutter, cold saw...

That was a good story. I agree with it to the fullest.
It's been my belief for a long time that nfl games are fixed, regular season games, and playoff games, and yes Super Bowls. I don't even waste my time with the nfl anymore. Don't even check the standings or read the articals.
They don't call it the No Fun League for nothing.

Give me college ball any day.
Give me Bama everyday.

You do, but in your case they were the Falcons and Bucs...
Sad but true . It really shouldn't have been too hard for people to figure out why I quickly became such a big B'ham Stallions fan when I was a teenager  They were the better product .

When I was growing up , the Falcons were only good in like 80-81 and the Bucs only had one quality season (79?) . In the early 70's , I couldn't figure out how NFL SB teams with 3-4 losses were being tagged as "great" . Compared to the Tide , all of them sucked :D

I shared the article because it does a great job of expressing why I love the college game so much. Heck, I even enjoyed that fiasco of a game between FIU and MTS last night. I didn't mean to make it a beat up the NFL discussion. It is, after all is said and done, football. My wife is dragging me to the Jags/Steelers game Sunday night (she loves her Jags), and after I've killed a couple of $7 beers, I'll settle down and enjoy it. Again, it is football, and it's played by some very gifted athletes.

DAVE,

If only everyone knew what really goes on behind organized and illegal gambling. Game fixing does exist. :eek2:

This is just one link of many.

Indeed, but it is very rare, and all sports that have large wagers placed are involved. Football is one of the most difficult sports to "fix", as there are too many moving parts, and the games are too "visible"...

I appreciate both versions. Yeah, the NFL can get way sterilized... but I will still watch all the games on Sunday, and even a crummy Monday Night game at times. I don't have a definite favorite team so I can sit back and just enjoy "the game". Heck, Tidehead and myself are going up to Nashville in December to see the Titans and Steelers... looking forward to that as it will be my first NFL game.

But I still like college football way more. College teams belong to the fans and people of that particular University, while NFL teams belong strictly to the owner.

Too true. Successful teams price their fans out of the market, and small market teams pick up and move when they cannot make enough money. As much as I love the NY Giants, I will never pay to see them play live again after this season (when their prices go up). I can afford it, but I refuse...
