Obviously it is a long shot, but does anyone think an actual scholarship hockey team would draw much support? If we did start one, we'd probably need several other SEC schools to start a team at the same time so we'd have a league to play in. And converting Foster Auditorium to be hockey ready would be expensive and Title IX would likely force us to start a women's team as well.

But the Alabama name and our warm climate could be a big draw in recruiting.
I'd love to see it. UAH has had a team for years and done quite well. A small arena in T town would be great and could be enjoyed by students.

Highly doubtful. Look at what has happened with UAH and their team. Outside of the Title IX issue and other funding, UAH couldn't get any team to come down and play them in Huntsville. They had a small core support group in the community, but it was still an uphill battle for them.

Did they lose their team?

The school said they were dropping the sport but then after an outcry and a fundraising effort, they decided to keep it.

The team has had a moderate level of success over the years. They started as a club sport back in the 70s and I think they won a national club championship. Then they elevated to varsity status. They were DII for a while and won a couple championships at that level before the NCAA dropped hockey to just one class.

They were in a conference of midwestern schools, I think Notre Dame might have been in their league. Then that league broke up and everyone else found a new home.

The problem is nobody wants them to join because of the travel involved so they have a lot of road trips.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong buy I think they're (UAH) still trying to save it. They got left out of conference realignment when D 2 hockey fell apart and it's hard for them to make a schedule. There was talk of their going back to club hockey but not sure where they stand now.
Those crimson hockey sweaters are sharp though. I need to add one of those to my collection!

Hockey sweaters are cool looking. I went to college with a guy who had a Canadiens jersey, always thought it was neat.

Excellent. Thanks for reporting. I am for anyone who goes out and brings glory and honor to the University. It doesn't matter if it's football, gymnastics, forensics, crew, the advertising team, whatever.

The men of Alabama hockey are to be saluted. Well done.

And no, I don't think it can be a scholarship sport until Title IX meets a well-deserved end, or at least till some common sense takes over with regard to allocation of football scholarships. Same is true with mens' soccer, unfortunately.

Very cool!

That was the team I grew up watching, growing up in Montreal!

Back then, they were a dynasty.

Now, they're, well, let's just say, they're no longer a dynasty...

Anyone have any idea on whether the proceeds from the jersey sales go to support the team?
My understanding is that they do. Also saw where Bama Fever has a tshirt that says all proceeds are going to help the team.

I used to watch quite a few UAH hockey games growing up in Huntsville in the early to mid-80's, and I am happy to see my Tide winning on yet another field of play. We win on grass, turf, mats, beams, vaults, bars, diamonds, greens, and now ice. I love it.

They're the Alabama of the NHL, but right now they are stuck in a Alabama mid 2000's type rut as a franchise. They need to find a Saban of hockey to bring them back to glory.
