OC and DC replacement discussion

Saban needs to personally fly out to San Francisco after the Niners are finished playing and give Demeco Ryans a blank check. His defense for the Niners is something to watch. Blitzes from all over the place, rarely the same place twice, constant pressure, and he has his men playing with their hair on fire.

We need some of that in Tuscaloosa.
Even if he weren’t in line for an NFL head coaching gig, it makes zero sense to move down from NFL coordinator to college coordinator.

One thing that many NFL lifers like vs college is that they dont have to recruit and dont have to get dog cussed everyday. So money might not be a big deal to them. Plus DR is about to get a huge payday as a NFL HC
It’s still a conversation you have to have if you are looking for a defensive coordinator and an alumni is the hottest name in defense at the moment. Even if it’s just to touch base and ask if he knows any up and coming people to keep an eye out for. Then you gauge interest in coming as well.

I'd still make him say no and at least open a door to him that he can walk through in the future if he has the desire. You never know, he maybe the best candidate to replace Saban as HC. 🤷‍♂️

I believe that it might be worth having the conversation of replacing Saban when he retires? Toss out the carrot.
We haven't learned our lesson with unproven head coaches yet? Dude, bringing in a guy as DC, even one as obviously talented as DR, and making him the HCIW (or something) is still bringing in an unproven HC.

As has been stated ad nauseum, Bama is not the place to learn on the job.

By the time the conversation comes up about the HC position he more than likely will no longer be "unproven". He will get a HC job in the NFL more than likely THIS OFFSEASON. I see Saban coaching at least three more years maybe five. So in a three to five year window Ryans will have a track record as to whether he's "proven" or not.

I agree with all that. My response was around using the "carrot" of succeeding CNS as a way to get DR to be our DC.

Does anyone even know if DR would even consider coaching in college? I agree, a convo wouldn't hurt.

But, if the reporting is correct, he's probably in line for a head coaching job this year. This will reveal a lot about his HC chops and how he could/couldn't be a candidate for when Saban goes to the lake.

I mean, I didn’t even know Demeco Ryans was a NFL defensive coordinator. That is how much I keep up with the NFL.

I'm not a S.F. fan but if they are playing a national game I do take time to watch just to see Demeco's defense play. He has done a wonderful job and he has them (for the last two years) playing with their hair on fire. I would be SHOCKED if he's still the Niners' DC after this season.

Man I love Meco Ryans and it would be great to have him back at the Capstone as the head man someday. Thing is, being a coach in the college game is way different than in the pros. Kirby learned directly under Nick that recruiting the Jimmies and the Joes, 24-7-365 is the name of the game. That is the key to success in college. Not sure career NFL coaches are willing to make that kind of time commitment to succeed at the college level.
