Off Week Discussion/OL/Running Game/Play Calling

  • HELLO AGAIN, Guest! We are back, live! We're still doing some troubleshooting and maintenance to fix a few remaining issues but everything looks stable now (except front page which we're working on over next day or two)

Thanks for your patience and support! MUCH appreciated! --Brett (BamaNation)

if you see any problems - please post them in the Troubleshooting board!

I just struggle to think out of all the offensive linemen we have, that we still have a "talent problem" at that position. This has been an issue since 2021 (COVID) but it doesn't seem to be getting any better. If I'm DeBoer, I'm calling Sam Pittman yesterday and asking him "how much?". Our Oline performances are not sustainable for long term success and I'm certain DeBoer already knows this. I just hope this offseason is spent on bringing in OL and defensive tackles. Those two positions have killed us this year.

Pittman would be a GREAT get and a very smart move.

Probably the best OL Coach we could reasonably make a run at adding to the staff.

2nd and short is the perfect time to throw deep. Granted, if you give up a sack you're making it difficult for yourself....but you should be able to pick up 3rd and inches....unless your OL is getting blown up repeatedly

If you have a good OL you are right about 2nd and short and especially off play action.

But our OL is not good.

We should either plan to run twice to get the 1st or go shotgun with the intention of going short to mid range with a pass and just move the chains.

We are self destructing a lot of drives by either taking deep shots at 2nd and short or long developing mid range routes because the OL gets whipped …. More specifically LT and we take a loss or at best have an incompletion.

Then they KNOW we are running up the gut on 3rd and short and they stuff it.

Then we run a gadget cute play on 4th and short and either get it by miracle or turn it over.

It’s madness.

I think there is something wrong with the techniques we are playing on the OL. The RB's can't get going because in most cases they are hit a yard deep in the backfield before they have even had a chance to look for the hole, which in most cases isn't going to be there. The line isn't firing off the ball and moving anyone and we seem to get a lot of stunts up the middle that absolutely do not get picked up. It seems the only running plays we have had any success on were on the outside. Inside it's about as bad as I've ever seen. Pass blocking they aren't as terrible at that. Great rushers give them big problems but great pass rushers give everyone problems. It's just a fact that being a great offensive lineman. You can't be a nice person, you can't be a sane person, You have to have a screw loose. Oh you can play the position and be none of that, but you're going to suck. We are going to have to find that type of guy. and we need an OL coach who is basically Satan.

Didn't know where to put this post, but since it's the off week, maybe just a new discussion of several things.

First off, we should be excited we are 7-1 going into the home stretch. Who would have thought that after week one? Now we have an off week to get rested and clean some things up. Great job by all: coaches and players!

I think Ty finally had an off game and we should have expected it. I said at the beginning of the season he might have a "slump" at some point due to his limited starting experience. I hope it was limited to this game. He missed at least 3 GB tagetted passes that with better acccuracy would have been 3 possible TD plays. He was just slightly off, but it may have been he was hurried because of the pass rush of the Cocks. I think TS will probably be much better against LSU.

Now, to the run game and our OL issues. I've reached the conclusion we've got to "dance with who brought us." I don't know if this OL can ever get too much better at run blocking. And, if I have one complaint about RG's play calling, it is that he puts us in some difficult spots in tight games just "trying" to run when it seems like we aren't going to be able. This gets us in alot of 2nd and long and 3rd and long and behind the chains. I think there were 3 straight drives against USCe in the second half where we tried to run on first down and got behind the chains. In a one score game like this game seemed to be the whole time, IMO, we need to forget the run game (especially the inside run game) and just do what we do best, which is letting Ty work with our WRs and running backs who are good receivers. Sprinkle in the occasional run on 2nd and short but let Ty work!!!

This might not be a popular opinion, but I don't think the run game problems are all on the OL. I think Jam is just slow to hit the hole (maybe because of injury still?) but that's what it looks like. D. Hill does a better job IMO.

What else y'all got?
You nailed it and Ty hasn't been 100 percent. He has been limited in the last few weeks. That explains why some of his throws are off.

Just a gentle push back on a few of these posts.

I don't think things are as bad (in general) about our offensive situation as some of you. Yes, run game is pretty much non-existent, but overall we are in good shape with TS and the receiving core. And the playcalling is generally good (outside of the up-the-gut run calls). OCRG has been brilliant in some specific situations (like the 2 point conversion and typing GB TD run).

I think it's more of a "self scouting" of potential weak spots and getting healthy and focused during this bye week.

In case anyone has forgotten, we are MILES ahead of where we were last year concerning the team unity, leadership and confidence we are seeing this year compared to last year!

Anyone hear anything about Injuries? I really would like more info on Lotzier Brooks and Isaiah Horton. Were there any other injuries from the game. When is Russaw coming back?

I again feel like the question has to be asked if we need to make a change with the strength and conditioning program. Idk what that would look like but we just haven't been the same on the lines in years.

The s&c program may not be the problem correlation does not equal causation. But I have started to wonder about it. Especially when looking at A&M after they got LSU's long time s&c coach.

I agree Ty didn't have his best game, it wasn't due too experience at all, Ty's problem against SC was due too reallyyyy bad OLine play...

I thought we simply looked tired as a team from a brutal schedule & this was a gut punch too give us a 2nd wind we needed to finish out the season..

We caused a lot of our own problems..several drives got crushed by penalties, several by drops, and a couple with play calling + drops etc...it was a very error-prone game start to about 8 mins left..we were fortunate the Defense was on it for most of the game or we would have been in a deep hole. Trying to gameplan for these 5 games with no break had to be especially hard..i think the bye will get us back to being more efficient offensively

Yep, we can't even move forward on short yardage plays. We lose yards, and it is really pathetic. We have to run trick plays to gain half a yard. I don't know how, but we've found a way to win seven straight games. Roll Tide!

We had a running back in Justice Haynes. I don't understand how he did not have success at Bama. He has 857 yards in 7 games for Michigan and is playing like who I thought we recruited. He is a likely early 3rd round NFL pick at this point.

He was always who you thought we recruited there just were not enough rushing opportunities over the previous two seasons for the tailbacks to show anything at all. That's why Jam Miller had to come back for his last year and Haynes was not gonna get his shot this year so he had to transfer
