you make it sound like coaches are beating down the door.

Yeah, today Jim Rome said "Maybe Alabama wouldn't have fired Mike Shula if they would've known that NOBODY wants that job". Can't wait for the home run hire so I can e-mail Romie and make him eat his words. It's actually strange he would say that because just a few years ago he claimed that Alabama "still is and will always be one of the top 5 coaching jobs in America".

I would think things are trying to be held in check for one very good reason; if the numbers I read that may have been thrown out to get SOS are indeed true, what do you say to RR if he becomes the choice. "Welcome, but you will have to take a $1,000,000 less per year than we were willing to pay the other guy".

interesting that he said that....since it DEFINITELY wasn't true a couple of years ago. He's a moron...

He's just like every other media smuck out there jumping on the Bashing Bama bandwagon. It's the "in" thing to do right now and he's gotta talk about what's hot in the news to keep the ratings up. But when it's all said and done, and Bama's got their top notch coach, then they'll all be changing their tune from bashing to complementing. Man, Bama's getting a lot of talk around the country for not being a top 10 coaching job anymore. We're no longer significant in the college football world. :rolleye2:

Roll Tide!!!

Well when RR has the proven success that SOS has then he could command the same pay. Gotta pay his dues, something Mike Shula didn't in getting 1.8 mil a yr.

you make it sound like coaches are beating down the door. If you listen to ESPN, and the Memphis media, nobody wants to come here. Coach Moore needs to go to a Delta State to find someone.

I do think this will be an attractive offer for the right coach. I also think if we "get down the line" to a Paul Johnson, we still are better off then we were.

The article concerning RR's discipline scared me off of him.

The only show I caught any of today was Colin Cowherd, who made a couple of good points (i.e., the amount of pressure Alabama fans levy on their program and coach), admitted he thinks we're going to end up with a very sharp coach (he thinks Rodriguez or Grobe), but then makes some nonsensical statements about Alabama in general (that it's a "regional program," which would be funny if it wasn't so blooming dumb).

They're all skimming for ratings, and even Cowherd will admit he plays directly in that direction sometimes.

Right now, we'd have to strike out on our entire A, B and C lists before we'd run out of talented coaching candidates. I won't be surprised if Alabama misses on the so-called "S-list" altogether, but UA will end up with a very solid coach nonetheless.

Here's what you need to know about the media:

"If it bleeds it leads" or in other words, bad news sells newspapers.

From the national media's viewpoint, for every Alabama supporter hoping for some good news on the Tide coaching search, there are 30-40 supporters of other big college programs that are hoping the sleeping giant isn't awakened.

The last thing the vast majority of college football fans want to see is a southern version of an Ohio State or USC resurgence. They like parity, but they're getting Ohio State, Notre Dame, Texas, USC, Michigan all coming back to rule the college football world as of late.

Well said.

Ironically, the fans of other traditional powerhouse programs don't mind if Alabama returns to national prominence. Most would welcome it the same way we welcome the opportunity to see Ohio State play USC for a national title again. They know that they'll get theirs, and they don't mind if we get ours. It's the way college football was meant to be, and we were meant to be a part of that picture. The USC's, Oklahomas and Notre Dames realize that as instinctively as we do.

The trembling and pants-wetting is coming from wannabe's. Like Auburn, for example. And to an extent, Tennessee. They know their days are numbered and they are understandably scared witless.

Why do they act like Alabama is the only place that puts pressure on a coach? Ty Willingham only got three years at Notre Dame (not 4 like Shula and Willingham also had one good season), Miami just fired a coach that won a national championship. Bobby Bowden is the winningest coach of all time and was forced to get rid of his own son under pressure. Tommy Tuberville was within a whisker of being shown the door in 2003. Frank Solich was Big 12 Conference Coach-of-the-Year in both 1999 and 2001, and was one of seven finalists for the Paul "Bear" Bryant National Coach-of-the-Year Award in 2001. Solich went 7 - 7 in 2002 and was fired. If anyone believes that there are not high powered boosters and fan pressure on coaches at any of the national football powers, they are kidding themselves.

Very good post Tide64

As somebody previously stated, it's the "in" thing right now to bash Bama. This will blow over in a few days when the new coach is hired, whoever he may be. Even without the two S's, we're in great shape coaching wise. I haven't been this optimistic about the program in a long while.

The future's so bright, I gotta wear shades. :cool2:

Rome's m.o. has always been stating something emphatically and unequivocally. Of course, as you have pointed out, it makes no difference that his statements may be polar opposites.

It is an exciting time, hopefully BAMA will get it's due; it's been a while for us fans to have anything to be this excited about. Only reason we get bashed is that BAMA may eventually have to conpete with the OSU's and USC's for titles; obviously the other SEC schools don't want us to get anyone; they might actually be botton tier again.
